  1. I have to do the same thing. The key is having enough space where you can get to all the boxes easily and pull out several at a time. I try to fill my boxes about 3/4 full to give myself some leeway for awhile, but inevitably the time comes where I have to make a major shift. I've got over 40,000 of them, totally organized, so when I get to that point now, it's a pretty big project. But if I don't keep them organized, I get uptight about the horrible "mess" they're in.
  2. How is this 9.8? I can tell it's in good shape, but it looks like the staple holes are a little worn, the spine is on the darker side of off-white, and it's misaligned a little. It's good enough for my collection, but a 9.8 should be head and shoulders above every other grade. There is just too much variance in grading for people to pay obscene amounts for 9.8 comics, because the grade can be decided on a whim by the "master" grader based on their state of mind when a book comes through.
  3. It isn't limited to groups like us. The opportunity to say whatever you want about every topic with no real repercussions has made all online groups toxic.
  4. Do you have a copy of the Super DC Giant pictured?
  5. I agree with you, but the states complained that internet shopping was robbing them of tax dollars they depend on. It took years, but they finally got their way. Actually, since back issues are used merchandise, they should be tax exempt, or at least at a lower rate than brand new. The tax is collected at the original point of sale, but I guess that doesn't matter anymore.
  6. I usually have comics coming in the mail all through the week from different sources. I enter them into 2 different databases, replace bag and board most of the time, and put them up when I finish with all the ones I receive in a day. I probably do that 3-4 days every week to keep from getting way behind, and most of the time I'll end up shuffling through some of the boxes I pull out. Having the collection organized, clean white boxes, new bags with no stickers, and everything lined up straight helps give me peace of mind, at least for a moment.
  7. If you're not happy with it already, it's probably going to bug you forever. Luckily, JIM 83 is still selling high, so you'll probably break even at least.
  8. Imagine running a company with attention to ethics and a belief that customer satisfaction is important. More and more businesses seem to forget these concepts every day, while it used to be commonplace.
  9. I doubt the owners realized their little company would one day dictate back issue sales. CGC doesn't claim that the assigned grade is absolute; only that their graders follow the standards set up by Overstreet. Its primary purpose is supposed to be determining whether restoration has been done and find other flaws. The sealed plastic case serves as protection. The number on the label is really just a bonus. For years, collectors understood that there was no such thing as a guaranteed grade, but that has shifted to where not only is the CGC-assigned grade "official", their competition is somehow viewed as risky or inferior in the process of grading a comic. The graders for these companies are trained in-house over a relatively short period of time. They aren't graduates from a 4-year intensive grading college with the companies fighting over the top achievers. Most probably started in another position and wanted a better one. The nice shiny clear holders with the fancy label and a bar code allowing a registry to be kept, and a big, bold number between 0-10 turn a flimsy periodical into something that looks "official", but it's only an illusion. There are too many variables and inconsistencies to consider the assigned grade as being perfect.
  10. I would feel the same way you do if that happened to me. Sorry to reopen old wounds.
  11. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393239741871?hash=item5b8eea45af:g:d80AAOSwYrVgcLBF Found this while going through sold ASM 129 just now. Only 1 bidder.
  12. I've been as critical as anybody here about USPS, but I have to say that I've noticed a big improvement over the last couple of months. True, their service level had been in the gutter for a long time, so maybe my expectations have also been lowered. There was a time I worried about every package I sent out or ordered, and now I'm pretty confident they will arrive at their destination (eventually). I guess only expecting a company to fulfill it's purpose for existing is still a pretty low bar.
  13. Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man were goals I set and abandoned many years ago, so when I started collecting again in 2010, those were the titles I went back to. I managed to complete them both in 3-4 years. The early ASM had already gotten fairly expensive, but there were deals to be found using patience. An unexpected financial hit in 2014 forced me to sell ASM 2-99, 121, 122, & 129. When I got things leveled out, I started replenishing all the book I'd sold, and there was a noticeable difference finding deals for those early ones. It took 2 years, but I replaced all the issues I'd sold with similar condition copies. I won't do it again unless I'm getting out, because selling those comics put me in a depression for months.
  14. Kav, I'm all the way in Alabama, and I don't know you nearly as well as some others here, but I promise I do not dislike you. Currently I'm 54 and don't have any serious health problems, and all I have is time. I would be glad to relieve your family (or whoever) of the burden of disposing of your comics. If it's weighing on you, just remember you have me as an option. Unless I die in the meantime or my health declines badly, I will be able to handle it personally or hire competent people to get them to me. I enjoy going through collections looking at the books and organizing anyway.

  16. Oh yeah. I get that. But I'll get in a bidding war if I'm not careful. Depends on how bad I want something.
