Have you been approached or shopped the possibility of a variant cover?

Not exactly. I’ve had a ton of people message me about prints/digital copies of my jam, would definitely be cool if Marvel decides to use it for something. It’d be the only way fans could obtain a copy of it, hopefully Marvel sees the potential in it.

However it might be a bit tricky as they’d have to gain permission from all 22 artists.

Or "the guy" made it and/or is selling and wanted a shift-the-blame cover story for how he got it.

Or "the guy" just wanted to create drama?! and none of it ever happened?

I just assumed he had it made himself, and didn’t want to get accused of doing something wrong.

Exactly. He probably assumed I’d find his post with my jam on his wall sooner or later, even though it’s unlikely because that was the first time I discovered his account.

To shift the blame elsewhere he told me purchased it at a show and lead me on some wild goose chase with barely any clues. Honestly I don’t even think he’s selling any prints of it. He just really wanted a copy to display on his wall. What really pisses me off is all the constant lies he told me. I wasted hours researching various stores, contacting artists, making posts on other platforms etc. Before it got cancelled, I was even planning on attending Toronto comic con with only one purpose in mind, to catch the seller red handed. He would have let me go through all that, and not say a word and continue wasting my time. Sent him a lengthy message last night, he read it but has yet to respond.

  3. Not sure if any of you are still following this thread but I’ve got an update. Been thinking lately about how odd this whole situation was, and decided to move my attention elsewhere. As I suspected, I don’t think someone was selling prints of my jam after all. The guy who supposedly purchased the print told me he found it at a local show that took place on December 7th. I just realized that the photo he posted of his room (with my print on his wall) was posted on November 30th... days before the con even took place. I think you all can tell where this is going. Can’t believe it took me this long to figure it out.

So how can another artist sell someone else's creation? Call it a recreation?

    Like this on the bay

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMAZING-SPIDER-MAN-39-WITH-GREEN-GOBLIN-COVER-RECREATION-ORIGINAL-COMIC-ART/283500121773?hash=item4201ec8ead:g:r-wAAOSw6~VbqMqR

Technically they shouldn’t be doing that but at least it was drawn by them. In my case, the guy selling the prints didn’t contribute to the jam nor does he own it.

I personally would be flattered to no end if people made copies of my original non published art pieces I own and they were good enough to make money from them...

(I do feel you should have the right to tell them to stop if you don't like this, or they should at least give you some sort of residual...but I've no idea how this could legally be enforced)

i feel it makes your ORIGINAL DRAWN piece WAY MORE valuable with the more eyes seeing an image of it anywhere!!!

John Romita Sr drew some GREAT Spiderman / Peanuts themed pieces for me years ago.... i'd love to have prints made of those........ and hundreds of other great Romita non published drawings I own........

if anyone LEGIT wanted to sell them with all proceeds going to a comic artist charity or the APL,  i'd be all for it!!!   :)

    Mike

I understand what you’re getting at Mike. I’m glad that people like my jam piece but I hate this circumstance. I’ve declined countless requests for prints, knowing that it’d be wrong for me to be reproducing 20 different artist’s work, and profiting off it.

But someone who has no affiliation with me, and had nothing to do with the completion of my jam is profiting off not only the artists, but myself. I spent so much time and money to complete that jam, I’d love to make some of that money back by selling prints but I know I can’t, it wouldn’t be right. He is also putting myself at risk, if any of the contributors find out that people have been purchasing prints of my jam, I’ll be the blame. It really infuriates me the more I think about, and I wish I found out about this sooner. It sucks that I’ll probably never find the culprit.

Just curious how is the page holding up with all the back and forth? Were most of these mail away contributions?

It’s held up just fine. It was done on great quality bristol board and doesn’t bend or crease easily. 6 of them were mail away contributions, I tried to avoid mailing it out as much as possible but some artists rarely ever attend cons around me. I always keep it in a top loader, wether I’m sending it out, bringing it to a show, or displaying it. Only ever take it out when an artist is adding to it.

What sucks is if the artists that contributed see the prints being sold. They may shy away from efforts like this in the future :(

I doubt they’ll ever know with the way the guy is handling it. I spent a lot of time searching for prints also being sold online and can’t find any, even after image searches and browsing on social media. So far I’ve only found one print, and as far as I know they’ve only been sold at a small holiday con in Toronto. If he starts to sell them online and at bigger shows, then they might find out about. I still have no idea how many copies he’s made and sold, only know the price he’s charging and a brief description of his booth which unfortunately doesn’t help much.

Its already copyrighted . Marvel/Disney own the copyrights. It sucks that your piece got out into the wild but you are in no danger of legal issues from anyone as you haven't done anything. If you go down any artist alley of any convention you will find 100's of copyright violations going on. If an artist is paid by Marvel to illustrate a cover for Spider-Man it does not give that artist rights to sell prints of it. The original art work is theirs but once you make prints that is a clear violation. It is rarely enforced if ever. I bought a ASM 129 cover print that Gerry Conway was selling with his sig. I don't usually go in for these things but I feel for these older artists/writers that were working for peanuts creating some of the most iconic characters while making the owners a lot of money today.

Well said. Whoever is selling them must not care about the potential consequences. Hate knowing that someone is not only profiting off of the the artist’s work, but also all of my time and money put into completing that jam.

  9. Hey everyone,

A couple days ago I was asked if I planned on selling prints of my Amazing Spider-Man 100 jam piece once it’s finished being inked (the pencil stage was completed in October). I told him the same thing I’ve said to everyone else who has asked for prints, no, as I’m not allowed to reproduce and sell another artist’s work (in this case, 20 different artists). He thought that was odd because last December, He purchased a print of my Amazing Spider-Man jam piece for $15 at the Fan Expo Holiday Market show in Toronto. Thought he was confused but then he sent me that photo with his print on his wall. So far I just know of the one print, but I’m concerned with how many prints they have made/sold so far.

The photo of my jam uploaded to CAF was watermarked, and posted after the event took place. HOWEVER the posts I made of my jam on the “this week in your original art collection” thread and a sketch group on FB was not watermarked and posted well before the show (both have been deleted). I thought I wouldn’t need to create a watermark when uploading it there but I regret not doing so. Whoever is selling prints of my jam either found it on here or my Facebook sketch group, and they’re probably located near Toronto. I hope that none of the contributing artists find out about the prints and think I’m reproducing them and making profit off it.

If anyone see’s prints of my jam being sold PLEASE DO NOT purchase it, and know it is NOT being sold by me. Please make sure to notify me asap if you find anymore prints, thanks in advance. Below is a photo of one of the prints and my convo with the guy who purchased it. Still unaware if they are being sold online too.

You, like a lot of other "CGC BOARD MEMBERS" have a lot to learn about CGC and there grading and what qualifies as a Green Label Vs Blue Label especially in low grade books where Green labels don't apply....with time young grasshopper:baiting:

Qualified or not, still going to say “name written on cover with marker” on the label, and end up with a 0.5. So as I said before, there’s literally zero point. Getting a 0.5 with an unwitnessed signature is my best case scenario. And that’s if I do a good enough job covering up the trimming. You’re telling me you’ve never seen low grade qualified books? Thanks for your input...

  11. 19 minutes ago, KryptoSpidey said:

I SAID straight up from the beginning you'd lose the CGC SIG series that wasn't part of the discussion regarding whether it could become a BLUE LABEL not a SIG YELLOW UNRESTORED LABEL

I know you did. But it’d be impossible to get a blue label if the signature isn’t verified, it would be considered “qualified” and get a 1.0 green label at best. I’m just saying that there wouldn’t be much to gain from cracking it and trying to remove the trimming. I wouldn’t send it back to CGC and I probably wouldn’t send it to CBCS so it’d just be a raw book with Stan’s signature on it and still probably have some sort of trimming, and/or an edge with a lot more damage. There’s no point.

    HOW SO BUDDY?

IT was pretty straight cut. Cut and dry point.

HE has a 1.0 Sig book. HE or SOMEONE ELSE could deslab it, deal with the trimming(even though the entire side is not as optimal a fix as just a cover) and get at worse what? a .5 Blue or still a 1.0? Seriously. Do you have a life? NOOB

However, there is zero chance a CGC witness or affiliate would be willing to preform that task, meaning I’d have to do it myself and lose the signature authenticity.

Also, the worst case scenario would be me sending it back to CGC and having it come back a 0.5, still with trimming but an unwitnessed Stan Lee signature.

  13. This thread escalated quickly lol. My original intent was to try and sell my AF15 and use the funds towards an unrestored copy. I figured if I could bump up the grade to a 1.5 or 1.8 it would help out a ton. After listening to many opinions I held off on getting it pressed and tried selling my copy as is. I actually got some really good offers (some over 8k) but I wasn’t able to secure another copy so I held off on selling mine. Almost landed an unrestored 1.0 but the deal fell through and I just kept this copy instead. For the last while I’ve taken a break from collecting comics and focused on original art so I haven’t been searching too hard for another AF15.

As for removing the trimming, it’s obviously too late, now that it’s signed by Stan (it’s a method that’s also very risky too). Trimming was the last thing on my mind when I got my AF15 signed by Stan and I still don’t fully understand how CGC came to that conclusion. It bothered me for a long time but I’ve learned to accept the fact.
