  1. Or Cosmic Odyssey! I’m STILL wanting to see J’onn J’onzz rip John Stewart’s head off!
  2. Funny, we’ve got none of the E.C. masterminds named. One could at least make a case for Kurtzman and the influence of Mad, for example. But I guess that’s an argument for influence on content trends, rather than artistic style trends. If you go that route, you can consider Kurtzman, Charles Biro, maybe Bob Montana, and, as always, Kirby.
  3. Well ya didn’t capitalize it the first time! I thought ya meant the character was a weirdo who popped in.
  4. Agreed, but I remember from some Modern thread that there’s a coalition of boardies who contend that everyone in the 90’s including McFarlane were copying Michael Golden and Art Adams. We’ve got to get those guys in here to liven it up. Blanking on who it was.
  5. So your co-worker was the model for either Shuman the Human or Flakey Foont?
  6. You jogged my memory...Sinnott went to Burne Hogarth’s school, and he talked about what an influence he was on many artists. Joe also said many of his peer artists in the 50’s and 60’s looked up to Lou Fine as their ideal of a master draftsman.
  7. I think I still have a VHS copy of it somewhere around here. I hope it’s now available in more current formats but I haven’t looked.
  8. Pour me a beer, Don! We’ll talk about it! Seriously, as we can see from the variety of answers, much depends on the criteria one uses. Kirby is the only one who is going to hit the majority of criteria most are likely to use. Personally, I’d use the criteria of influence on other creators throughout the history of the medium, so Eisner is probably on mine too. From there it’s hard to pick the final two most broadly influential ones IMO.
  9. Kirby gets the Washington head. The rest is just chit chat over beers.
  10. Thank you! It was an all or nothing deal, and for exactly that reason I took it all.
  11. High-quality drive-by Papal threadkrap to show a little love for war! Hiya Mike! No flamethrowers or other excessive brutality?
  12. This is always a tough one; this thread's cousin, the Golden Age Year in Review thread, was compounded by comics-related items in addition to books, as I picked up my first ever keeper pulp, a Sunday strip OA from 1942 (Smilin' Jack) and the Feb 27, 1940 Look magazine, with an original two-page Superman story where he drags Hitler and Stalin out of their HQ's and brings them before a world court. But in the end its about the comics, and there's 2 Silver Age keys that have to be here, so I am naming an honorable mention as well, as I can't quite bump either of these Silver books for my #2 GA addition this year. So here's my top 3 and honorable mention, in no particular order: In the case of the OAAW #83, I bought an entire 1,800-book collection to add it; the Action 252 came out of an LCS that rarely has major keys; the Bullseye 11 was buried in an ebay lot of Golden Age (not giveaway priced or even cheap by any means, but this book does not come up often) and the Superman #14 was part of a comic collection that a rare books dealer a couple hours from me had landed. I saw it on ebay but noticed the city and deduced the shop from the handle, then went in-person to see it.
  13. Anyone got the cover wrap for All-Select Comics #7 that they would be willing to sell or trade? I’ve got a supple, solid coverless copy I’d love to pair up.
  14. Thanks; paper is supple mostly, just that top edge is a bit chippy. Book can be read easily.
  15. Sweet buy, Josh! Congrats to buyer and seller!
  16. It’s just manufacturing; would they really downgrade for that? I wouldn’t think so, but
  17. Doesn't seem too odd to me ... Am I missing something? There's a sub-forum called "Hey, Buddy can you spare a grade?" Just pop it in there with lots of pix and a thread headline of "PGM Matrix Comic recalled version #X" or somesuch (PGM = Please Grade My). That'll get you some feedback.
  18. C'monnnnn.... yer holdin' out! Flash the stash!
