  1. Great book...and it's also the first black character in an Archie title (Valerie precedes Chuck Clayton and Coach Clayton). If any Archie silver key is underrated, methinks its this one. Congrats
  2. When you boil my rant down, this is what I was getting at. We are the infrastructure these days.
  3. While there's lots of graceful boardies, there's also lots of truth in this sentiment. Sure I like a nicer looking copy over a lesser one, but if it's a book I want and the only copy I can get, I still love it. Always have. I can't think of a better thing I've seen happen in this hobby in a long time, movie hype notwithstanding, than Overstreet moving up many GA prices in lower grades. While condition is a part of collecting collectibles, the fundamental chase should be the intrinsic cool factors (in the best shape possible) not just the shape itself. Kinda reminds me of the guys who spend more time waxing their sports cars than going around turns sideways. Just as important is that the hobby needs collectors who are also ambassadors. I grew up influenced by dealers who played this role (not just selling me stuff; I never saw a GA on offer in Iron Vic's or Octobercountry, but Vic Bertini and Bruce Conklin would always be willing to regale with tales of the mystique of GA books. Similarly, I can't remember the last Dolgoff market report where he failed to gush like a kid about any GA Caps he acquired in the past year -- and that's a good thing as well as an important one). Its easy to get to a certain level of collecting focus, so to speak, and forget that your flip book is someone else's key/Grail, but we do the hobby no favors with this behavior. The best way to show off a cool collection is to share your passion while showing those books; you can derisively think of it as grooming your buyers for when you cash out, but I prefer to think of it as grooming future stewards of these treasures. (I do think a lot of boardies do this well.) Speaking for myself, far from flushing garbage, I've sold or traded a lot of books I've loved in order to acquire books I've wanted for years. But it does not mean I don't miss them. I traded my SA Dr Strange run for a GA Batman, for example. I'd do it again, but I miss them too. I guess sometime ago I came to the realization that collecting is stewardship. So I figure it's better to have as many beloved books as possible for a time, even if you have to slowly cycle through in order to have as many as you can over the course of one's collecting days. Some stay longer than others, some come back, but it's all stewardship. You want to hoard a favorite book, fine, but share the passion that makes you hoard it in the first place.
  4. My pleasure; thanks for sharing all yours! Makes a handy shopping list
  5. I'm closer to Grebal's number too unfortunately; mostly due to the damage at top center on the cover. Otherwise I'd be up in that seven range too. Seems like one of those books they are always tough on; the dark cover is unforgiving. Congrats on a great book; I'll always have a childhood soft spot for it
  6. Original Owner Silver Age collection offerings, beginning tomorrow night around 9-10 pm EST. Some of you may recall a few weeks ago I acquired an OO collection distinguished by two cool characteristics -- clear, prominently placed date stamps in unobtrusive places on most covers, and the collector's initials, M.R.," in blue pen in the lower right margin of the splash pages (on most but not all books). I have selected a few pieces for my collection, and I have offered books to a couple local collectors (DD7 will be shown on Thursday; will offer it thereafter if he passes), but the others will be offered over the next several days starting with Daredevil tomorrow night. Also coming are Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish, Strange Tales, Journey into Mystery, Kid Colt 121, and a group of the Atom to be offered as a lot for a shipped price. All others will be offered individually; shipping will be actual. The collection was amassed in Springfield, Massachusetts; as indicated by a form filled out but not clipped in TTA #65. The books are lower grade range but clean, flat and bright. It's cool stuff; please check it out! See pics below to get an idea.
  7. Congratulations! I share that sentiment....Still remember falling for Moldoff's Hawkman from my Famous 1st Edition Flash Comics 1 as a kid...as Sacentaur said, they are not as popular today but great books. Possibly the most generally underapprdciated major GA title these days? Congrats on a tough and awesome book!
  8. Great cover, and one of the great Marvel slugfests -- reader copy required with this one!
  9. Sorry for my delay in thanks gang, been running around. But thank you all as this is much-appreciated and gives me multiple options!
  10. Yes, thanks DocHoppus for sharing! I think there's more kids out there like this than we think. There's a flea market baseball card dealer near me who sells a lot of $1 readers and does not want to bother with anything else. When he buys collections, he has a 14-year-old who sorts them for him and sells the hot movie books etc on Instagram. They split the profits. I met the young man one day and he told me how he bought an X-Men 1 and DD1 with his share. They are out there.
  11. Red dressed blonde in trouble to red dressed blonde who looks like trouble
  12. Who sells these today? Anyone got a good place to order from without having to buy a batch of them? Thanks!
  13. I understand; I'm just reporting words spoken to me when I asked on the phone. My interpretation/takeaway from that conversation was quick press was worth a shot for an NCB or two. I was just trying to understand when each level of service would be appropriate. The volume thing was of course on my mind too.
  14. I wonder why they would reject it? Transparency, including published grading standards used, would frankly be a good thing. Yes, there's an art to it too, and one cannot enumerate every flaw in advance in written form. But just as Overstreet puts grade definitions in print in the guide, published standards plus the grading notes for any book should be enough for any collector to reconcile the grade assigned to a particular book. But for now I would settle for understanding what a "Qualified .5" is. Maybe I never understood the Qualified label correctly? But we all seem to have the same understanding of it.
  15. Poke the grader. Notes about a stain on cover (must be invisible ink) and small tear on back (oh, now I see it...less than 1 cm). One good-sized spine tick. Sometimes they get it wrong too. That's all I remember the LCS reading me from the notes. Will go back for print-outs but I was in a hurry at pick-up.
