I have no dog in this fight, but I'd sure like to. As Mio said, they are what they are. Same book, same time, slightly altered for different markets, but those alterations do not include content or advertising. Forget the label nomenclature debate for a moment. They are almost parallel to 1985 Eclipse Comics Miracleman 1, except printing occurred in two different places. The less common UK release commands a premium. Then there's the 35-cent Star Wars 1. Same book, same time, same print, but a subset of 1,200 or 1,600 or somesuch was given a price bump and issued in a single Midwestern market within the overall U.S. Market. Again, huge premium. The pence books strike me as a similar situation. Same time, same run, price altered for a different market. Early globalization is all it is. I'll have to search but I read somewhere (one of the Overstreet market reports?) speculation that for shipping purposes the shorter UK run were first off the presses due to increased shipping time needed. The guy used FF#1 as an example, suggesting that the UK market copies had a deeper green monster on the cover, suggesting better ink saturation?? I'm not a printer, who knows? Anyway, I can see equal value one day. If anything, despite scarcity, I do not get the tremendous premium given to inconsequential "variants" in general, such as price variants or a jeweler's ad insert. At least with variant covers (and I'm not a modern collector) a different, less common is a difference of substance. These are not a huge motivator for me, though I'd pick up a fun one like the Betty and Veronica Hulk 181 homage or the Wolverine EC decapitation homage. I think I just argued a bit of both sides but that's how I see it. I don't get why slight, immaterial differences, however scarce, justify huge premiums, but I do not see them as inferior copies either.

So we've got photo cover romance, Trues, and sports. I think most non-duck funny animals aren't too far ahead of this pack. Not saying I don't like them, but I don't think their market is all that hot either.

As promised, dug mine out. (Had 2 copies, but the other went along with 17 other books in a trade for Avengers 1 & 4. On the bright side, I now have two Avengers 4).

I agree. I am convinced it is the split image cover that keeps this book and AT #1 at shockingly low prices. We are in the age of the cover image, and the split covers are big time fail. I was NEVER a fan of the split cover; the only thing worse was the onset of the barcode . . . One of my favorite cover tricks though, was when the cover figure grabbed or broke the logo - what was it X-Men 56 that first did that? (the Adams cover) Later, it led to be a staple of the BA. Isn't there a Batman or Tec cover with Blockbuster shattering the logo with a punch? Mid-silver either way. Great idea for a cross-era thread Post your broken logo covers!

lolll yes maybe in a year from now it will!! Maybe the spiderman / star wars crossover treasury with the aunt may slapping darth vader panel! and throw in holding a pile of logs and a cameo or 2 Preferably by Woodgod....

Oh, and Crandall, Check That's right, mea culpa, failed to mention in my rush to post before preparing dinner. Had this book on my mind for this thread for a few days and finally had a chance to dig it out this a.m. Mrmyst, we may all be looking for a nice one for a while ... Last I checked, which was a while ago, there were four on the census, with the highest being a 6. There are some cool post-Plastic Man Police covers, but I've pored over Gerber and I think this is head and shoulders above the rest. I'll do the splash page after I settle the house down.

Hey, if posting that "Snarky Parker" didn't kill this thread, a little SA sure ain't. I got the idea to post OA from DavidMerryweather...don't blame me! Buuut....last time I did, it flushed All Star 3, All-Winners 19, and ShockSuspenstories 6....so I'm taking some credit As to Snarky Parker, that post has me considering pulling the trigger on a Howdy Doody #1....is there a Therapy thread???
