  1. Super excitement when I found this one at the fair yesterday! Mild deflation when I got home and realised I already had it Blondie price variant anyone? "Arf! Wot an irriot, arf!"
  2. Even though I don't collect them, I couldn't resist this 10c beauty at the fair yesterday. And it's nice sometimes to compare them with your pence copy, just to make sure you haven't missed any subtle differences. And indeed a difference there was! One is a solid, nicely centered copy with strong colouring And the other is my pence copy I only need the 15cv and I'll have the set! Nice C-12-13 written on the 10c copy too. Wonder what that stands for
  3. Yes, I need more pennies to buy more pennies Bob 208 is the current 'I've tidied up me files' Dell figure: 40 titles, and a potential 424 books. Will likely end up lower though, once the 'gaps' cement themselves. On that subject, here's a good blog which talks about missing cent Four Color books: http://dellcomicfan.blogspot.com/2011/12/where-are-missing-dell-four-color.html I can see an obvious Dell pence gap for Tom & Jerry, just like the Gold Key scenario I posted earlier today. So maybe the 'avoiding clashing with existing UK reprint titles' will be a thing here with Dell too. 4. Well of course I knew that! (a.. wonky.. oblong is.. a... rhomboid)
  5. I couldn't find any reference to that anywhere either Reggie. Be cool to see it if true
  6. Thanks Nestor - I had the two Surfers in the files already but the X-Force #51 is new ...and I love how the AUS price is $2.50 while the cover still has the 'Still only (US) $1.50' blurb on it
  7. It's a fairly well established idea Bob - we know that Amazing Spidey stopped at issue 120 so as not to clash with 'Spider-Man Comics Weekly' etc. As for Gold Key, I think it's likely that the same concept applied - extract from an earlier post speculates as much (I've since found T&J 270 to 276 but none beyond):
  8. We're up to 913 confirmed AUS copies now, across 91 titles: I found this Amalgam book on eBay: So there are a few Amalgams creeping in: The GCD lists them as 'Marvel' books, so I guess we should include them?
  9. I'm not actually collecting the Dells Bob. I pick up the odd cheap copy for this thread but don't intend to build the set, just catalogue what exists. If I could go back 20 years, I would try to collect all 5K or so pence books for all publishers. That would be a thing. But it's too late now, and would be too expensive. And I don't have the space really any more! So I only collect Archie, Charlton, King and some Gold Keys. And the odd Marvel. I really enjoy the Charltons and Archie's. I wish I had collected them instead of the 8,000 Spidey books at I had at the peak of my completist days. But Hell, I enjoyed that too. As long as I have comics in my life to some degree, I'm happy. Here's the Dell confirmed list so far (although I have a few more in the pending folder to add): Title Potential Pence Number Range Confirmed Pence Numbers Total Adventures of Mighty Mouse, The 146-151 146, 147, 148 3 Andy Panda (Walter Lantz) 50-54 50-51 2 Bat Masterson 3-7 3-7 5 Bugs Bunny 72-79 73-75 3 Cheyenne 15-22 15-18 4 Colt .45 5-9 5-9 5 Dell Giant 28-47 32, 33, 35, 38-40, 42, 43, 46 9 Four Color 1087-1236 64 Gunsmoke 20-27 20-27 8 Have Gun Will Travel 5-10 5-8, 10 5 Hi-Yo Silver, The Lone Ranger's Famous Horse 34-36 35-36 2 Huckleberry Hound 5-12 5, 6, 8, 11 4 Hugh O'Brian, Famous Marshal Wyatt Earp 11-13 11-13 3 I Love Lucy 27-32 27-29 3 Lassie 49-54 49-53 5 Lawman 4-8 4-7 4 Lone Ranger, The 133-140 133-135 3 Looney Tunes 222-237 224-228 5 Maverick 10-16 10-14 5 Mickey Mouse 71-78 74, 76 2 Porky Pig 70-77 70-72 3 Quick Draw McGraw 2-7 2-3 2 Rifleman, The 3-8 3-7 5 Rin Tin Tin and Rusty 34-38 34-38 5 Roy Rogers and Trigger 137-144 137-139, 141-143 6 Ruff and Reddy 5-10 5-7 3 Sea Hunt 5-10 5-7 3 Spike and Tyke (M.G.M.s) 22-24 23 1 Tom and Jerry Comics 189-204 190, 192-195 5 Turok Son of Stone 20-24 20-24 5 Tweety and Sylvester 29-33 29-30 2 Wagon Train 5-10 5-6, 10 3 Walt Disney Presents 4-6 5 1 Walt Disney's Chip 'n' Dale 22-26 23 1 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories 235-250 239-241, 244-245 5 Walt Disney's Donald Duck 71-78 73, 75 2 Walt Disney's Scamp 14-16 15 1 Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge 30-34 31, 33 2 Walt Disney's Zorro 10-14 11, 13-14 3 Walter Lantz New Funnies 277-284 277-279 3 Pence Total: 205 I'll post the Four Color / Giant list later
  10. The indicia search is coming along nicely by the way. It's difficult to complete, as so many of the books I need to see inside are next to impossible to find, let alone get shots of their indicias. I was hoping to find a few at the London Fair yesterday but had no luck Still, I think I'm nearly there. Here's the current (work in progress) '4 of 7' page: As I've probably mentioned once or thrice, this research strand crashes into my font work and also helps to inform the 'what pence copies may or may not exist' work. When the JIM #65 appeared last month (see previous posts) that blew a hole in my long held theory that JIM #64 & 65 did not get the pence treatment. But now that #65 has surfaced it now seems likely that #64 will too. Look at JIM #64 on the page there above, conspicuous as a copy where the US version has a Thorpe & Porter interior. It makes more sense for it to have a pence copy and to move across accordingly (Anyone reading have a cents Kid Colt Outlaw #96 that they can post a shot of the indicia please? It should have the T&P wording) As it stands, every Marvel issue cover dated January to April 1961, where there is a pence copy in existence, has the T&P indicia in both cents and pence copies. So it seems likely therefore that JIM #64 will eventually join his colleagues in the pence column doesn't it? Hope you can follow what I'm saying here. When I have gathered a few more books I will post all the conclusions here. There are always exceptions in this kind of research I find - you can see on the page above that JIM #67 has no T&P indicia in cents or pence copies - but the overall picture is fairly robust / telling. I know this is not a subject that will interest many but I enjoy doing it and, to my knowledge, I don't think anyone else has ever looked at this. Lot's of interesting stuff in them folders below... Comic minutiae
  11. Hello Someone posted this Strange Tales the other day and reminded us that it had two US prices on it: Cool isn't it. I like the fact that someone actually spotted this when they made the pence copy: Change price Remove month Remove second price! I always thought there was something odd about the 9d price on this one. White box in a blue circle. Why not white box in the existing black circle.... One for @Aman619 to ponder
  12. Morning Pardners Here's two new Cowboy 'pence copies', courtesy of some fine Sunday Fair box diving: And look, no stupid captions But wait! I hear you cry! These are not pence copies! These are cents copies with pence price stickers! No they aint. Those in the know of the knowing know all knowledge know that the cents copies for these two books have a dirty great 'STILL' word in the price balloon (balloon? It's a rectangle surely. Or an oblong. And a wonky one at that) Observe: See? It's patently obvious to three men and a dog like Sparkenwood that these are in fact 6d L Miller copies with 9d price stickers! There's inflation for you. Were they cents copies you would be able to see the 'STILL' poking it's big capital letter font head out from behind the sticker wouldn't you. And anyway, I looked at it with a torch and a magnifying glass(man), in the dark and everything. So it pays to know your price balloons. Oblongs, sorry. Alright, wonky oblongs. Jesus, you lot! Now, The Sheriff, or to give him his full name 'The Sheriff of Tombstone' completes the Miller pence copy set assuming Marwood hasn't 'done a Gold Key' and sodded up the date range: Five Sheriffs. What an arresting sight. Heh heh. Arresting. Did you like that? No? Well sod ya then Taint no way I'll be attempting a sticker lift, so I'll be keeping em (un)peeled for a stickerless copy. In the meantime, here they be 13 14 15 16 17 Choice!
  13. Yes, I saw that too. He's been punished Pete, and sent to bed without any broth.
  14. Both already in the files Bob, thanks I found a new one at the London Comic Fair yesterday - I didn't buy it, but took a picture: I like how these later ones cover the US price with the shilling price, rather than sit somewhere else on the cover as was the case with the earlier issues - here's the US version: Only #8 missing for The Lawman now: ....although my gut tells me it may not surface Time will tell. I'm due an update here on Dell. Will get around to it at some point, and post the updated known issues list soon.
  15. Morning Poor Sylvester looks a bit rough there doesn't he: Still, the good news is that Tweety is telling him that his arrival has pushed back the known Gold Key pence date range from April to March 1973: I wonder if the Pinky Pink Panther, the Rinkydink Panther #11 will show too in time? The March 1973 T&S increases the known pence tally to 105, up one, and the total potential pence copies (assuming I've got my sums right) to 171. However, the online Star Trek community are more or less convinced that the missing pence Trek books will never appear. If true, the presence of gaps will be a thing, and a thing which may affect the other seven confirmed pence titles. So when we look at the gaps here... ...we see a 'pence book, no pence book, pence book, no pence book, pence book' pattern affecting five titles from June to November 1975. So maybe they don't exist either...? Food for thought, as the hunt continues for them pence priced Keys of Goldness
  16. I spotted this letter in an old DWB from 1986 on eBay: Unless there's two of them, it shows he was a fan. What a shame that that historic love failed to translate into his own end product 30 or so years later...
  17. No, that's a Russian copy. Thanks for trying though Hope the VCC went well by the way. I was offline and missed it.
  18. Look at that cretin Sparky there, showing off like an overblown tart. Only 332 posts but already universally despised. Give the popinjay a strike on his birthday, that's what I say! Oh, they did. Fast forward 9,000 posts or so and not much has changed. Still as popular as a fart in a spacesuit. Old boards looked good though didn't they. Nice colouring I always thought. Anyway, thanks for having him.
  19. None! None responses to ze postage past of ze Count. It seems ze boards haff no love for ze Archibalds pence as posted in ze postages of ze Count. I must be declaring that ze Count haff no understanding of zis. Still, ze members indifferent can always 'pop it up ze pipes' as zey say, heh heh. Bastages, one and all, bastages! Ah, ha, ha, ha, hah!
