All of this is academic to me as I do not have any of these pages, and am very unlikely to ever own one at these prices.

This isn’t someone buying the art because they just love a specific image or read the book and love it. It’s an investor who’s cornering the market.

I thought about that, but it’s not a classic Zatanna image.

I am friends with Dan Mishkin. He’d love this.

I figured it wouldn’t sell for as much as a title splash. But I thought maybe that splash had a special story significance, or something, because I agree with others here; I don’t think it’s that awesome.

The reason I ask is because I have what I consider to be a nice Colan WW panel page, and I’m wondering if the value has been effected by this sale.

Not when you compare to other WW pages by Gene Colan of the same vintage. Even if it’s a title splash.

I saw the cover in person when Mike brought it to a con in Mt. Pleasant Michigan a couple years ago just after the Heritage sale. It it very cool. And, of course, I said: “So YOU’RE the one who bought it” to Mike, like a insufficiently_thoughtful_person.

I think the bigger risk is newbies getting taken in by really well done recreations. I do think that those doing the recreations should always add a little something to them to distinguish it from the real thing.

Things that shouldn’t be overlooked regarding OA as an investment, particularly older published OA, is that it’s not easy to fake, is one of a kind, and (well done professional) restoration doesn’t hurt its value. The fact that it’s published makes it harder to pawn off fakes, like you might see in the fine art market. It’s easier for an informed lay person to spot published OA fakes than in the fine art world. And value is tied to the source material being part of pop culture and not just a temporary fad in the New York or LA art gallery scene. Plus, unlike Gold or Stocks, it’s a fun hobby! It’s got a coolness factor to it. You can display the art and enjoy it. When you combine all of the above with skyrocketing prices, and the mainstreaming of comic books as part of popular culture, you’re going to attract more big money buyers eventually.

I agree that it will effect the market in a big way. But what I think will happen is that a lot of the overpriced nostalgia bronze and copper age stuff and the 2nd & 3rd tier - and below - silver age stuff will plummet in value. But, you’ll see some 90’s to modern pages skyrocket.

I think the people who thought this hobby would die out as collectors age out might have been mistaken. Money attracts collectors. The prices this art has been getting turns the eye of Comic book collectors, who then start down the path.

If you have the money to spend, great. 99% of the rest of us don’t, And we never get to see that stuff unless it pops up at heritage or someone posts it at CAF.

And...ironically the day after I posted this, I saw a piece pop up and I bought it. Go figure.

Here’s an irony for you. Due to life circumstances, I have been saving up a lot of cash. I now have enough to go buy some of the nicer pieces in my OA wheelhouse (Still talking high 4 figures though). But I find the more abstain, the easier it gets to be disciplined and not impulse buy. There’s really only been one piece that popped up that I tried pulling the trigger on, but someone beat me to it. I’ve kicked the tires in a couple others. But I’m really not in the buying mood right now. it’s weird. The more cash I have on hand, the less I want to spend it.

I actually do not like that ASM 299 cover. At all. I am not a huge McSpidey fan to begin with, and that’s not anywhere close to one of his best pieces. I’ve seen over a dozen interior McSpidey pages I’d much rather own. More power to the people that want it, though.

If Alan Moore wasn’t such an antisocial Grump, he’d probably be in he Miller, Jim Lee, Kirkman group. And Arguably bigger.
