Not 10% for that kind of book, for a cartoon, or a generic unknown superhero maybe. Unless stuff has completely changed. I used to have tons of coverless books, I finally decided to upgrade a tiny bit. When I sold them on eBay a lot of the keys went for good or better.

I sold a GA GL #1, that had been in a FIRE. I wish I could find the picture, lol.  Someone recently referred to one of my books as "tasty" well, this one was TOASTY, there were charred bits all over my desk...I just couldn't bear to toss it. It sold for over $500 I think? and that was at least 7 or 8 years ago;)

There are always people looking for centerfolds, too. I paid a fortune for a coverless Sensation 1, because I had one missing a centerfold. I just didn't pay attention to the numbers. I knew I wasn't spending $5 or $6k on a restored awful copy so I kept bidding...and someone else must have needed it too;)

Yea that is one thing the boards and to some extent eBay are good for because 20 years ago one's chance of finding the random centerfold you needed would seem to be like a needle in a haystack.  I have been trying to put together a More Fun run in really low grade and need to go to the "Lets get married" board and see if anyone there can offer some help.

    @ender

Since I was taught by 2 of the top "bottom feeders" when I first learned about GA books, it was always a rule of thumb that a coverless book was worth about 20 - 25% of good, unless it was a Timely, then about 50%. Stuff changes a lot, but I'm sure one of the professionals (dealers) can help more:)

    Thanks,

I had heard 10 %, but it is hard to really even know what the good price is when so few sell.  I could find out I suppose by throwing it in an auction and seeing what the market will do with it but then.....I don't have it any more!

  3. OK this one, legit grail by just about anyone's definition, scarce, Gerber 7, All-American Comics 16. Also anyone want to chime in about ideas of value? Very few sold, could not find record of a Coverless ever selling but I am sure a few have.  A beat Coverless All Star 8 sold a little while back for just under $10,0000 and the book has traditionally been much more expensive. Don't know if that means anything today though. Any help is sure welcome.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

A mini debate in another thread sparked this thought, though I'm not sure whether or not it has been covered elsewhere. We all know that CGC tends to put the emphasis on technical grade over eye appeal, presumably because technical matters can be measured fairly consistently, while beauty is in the eye of the holder.

So here you can post examples from your collection of either books with great eye appeal regardless of the technical grade, and conversely, books with a high grade but relatively low eye appeal.

I think this one is possibly my most beautiful book, and it is fairly high grade as well.

Gotta say you have pretty high standards when a 9.2 on a book from 1944 is "fairly high grade" :foryou:   totally agree about it being a really beautiful book!

So, since I am a deadly slow writer, I will simply copy and paste a post which I had written sometime last week that kind of speaks to this question you are asking here.  I have to apologize in advance for the wall of words, so you can simply skip to the next post if you don't want to read it all:

It should be pointed out, however, that the opinion which I had expressed above is based upon my own personal preference for not buying books when they are hot, and instead, trying to buy them when they are slightly out of favor and even more so, when they are seemingly starting to wake up from an extended slumber and hopefully about to go on a long overdue upwards ride.  hm

Of course everybody's different as I have always been a long-term collector who doesn't mind holding onto my books for an extended period of time.  Probably would not work for many of today's generation of collectors/investors/speculators who seems red hot to buy in on a particular hot book, but only hoping to discard it 6 months later for the next hottest trend.  (shrug)

I guess as the old saying goes: To each, their own.  (thumbsu

I typically hold onto most of them for a really long time.  Especially those that are that expensive as I may not be able to buy them again.

  6. So with these prices seemingly at such a high, I would like the ideas from other collectors who "play in this sandbox" way more often than I do: Is this the time to sell any Pre Robin Detectives or buy them before they go even higher, or just wait and watch?  Would love to know the opinions of Gotham Kid, Gator, LouFine, Primetime, Dark Knight, WayneTech and you other guys!

Just to follow up on my 'Tec question.... 31 vs. 38.... I can't believe Robin's first app wouldn't be the third most important Bat-book and deserving to be on a Top 10 GA books, but there is undoubtedly a cult-like reverence for the pre-Robin days. Which one wins, Bat-fans?

I would agree with you and go with the 38,but the pre Robin guys are adamant and that may certainly sway their views.  I would put More Fun 52 in my top ten books but I would certainly admit that would be a minority opinion.

I have issues 18 and 22 but 18 is a big restoration.  One copy of 22 is trimmed but the other is not.  Both are favorites.

Is the midget comic stuck on 20?  I have a pretty nice 20 but the mini comic had been removed.  Always wondered about trying to find a loose one and at least put them in the mylar together.  Very nice.

I think it was implied, cuz of gold section.

However...I think it's important to gauge what is important to collectors overall, across all ages of comics. AF15 is a BEAST right now. I coulda easily got in last year. It's a little late now.

What will it take for horror books to make the list? I see Americans becoming more and more interested in horror & suspense cinema over the next decade or so.

Horror movies will become the new Superhero genre, with muti-million dollar budgets and big directors. Not slasher flicks either...complex characters and deep storylines. What big time movie makers have made a horror film? Has Scorcese? Speilberg? No. Someone will one day.

Horror is still a niche market.

When will horror books begin selling for $20,000+? I see it happening...

I would think that big directors had already made big Horror movies, Hitchcock with Psycho, Spielberg with Jaws, and Ridley Scott with Alien.  Maybe it needs to be comic first and then much later a film do drive comic prices?  Don't know for just but just my two cents.

  10. Dear Gator,

Going to Orlando on Family vacation in the summer.  If searching for GA or SA books, any comic shops worth the cab fare to and from to go and visit as I will not have a car?  Thanks!

  11. OK so if I have a very nice coverless and can find the same book for sale with a nice cover but big problems inside, if I send that to a professional and they take out the bad guts and affix the cover to my nice coverless with age appropriate staples, what level of restoration is that?  I would guess slight as they are only using original, age appropriate materials but I am looking for others advice and experiences here.  Also has anyone had this done and had good/bad luck with specific people?  Estimate of fair cost of doing the work?  Thanks for the help!

I will admit I am not too familiar with this book but WOW!! That is a heck of a cover!

Even if you could find all the pages, they wouldn't all have the same price tag. This particular page likely would have the highest.

yea except for the covers I think you're right that would be the most expensive.  It just seems like a crazy amount to pay for a page from Action 1 much less Superman 1 which seems much easier to find.  Not that I am looking to be honest.
