All the Garfield detractors in this thread are going to regret the day they passed up all these $360 Garfield daily strips when they can no longer be had for any less than $380.
The Garfield cabal is forming right before our eyes!

The older DC art did poorly. The Justice League 29 splash sold for $50,400 in the Jan 2021 Heritage auction vs. $36k today. The Hawkman 3 cover and Brave and the Bold 35 splash each sold for $36k in the November 2019 auction vs. $36k and $28,800 today. Hawkman is definitely on the wrong side of the generational shift.

That's the same Superman 1 that was sold recently, no?
Yes, it sold for $2.6M at Comicconnect in Dec ‘21. The All Star 8 sold for $1.6M at Heritage in June ‘22.

The few times I’ve gone well above my normal price range I’ve found that my enjoyment of the art doesn’t increase in proportion to the cost. It would be tough for me to find a piece I would enjoy more than five smaller pieces for the same price.

The published cover matches the art Dino sold. It looks like the Heritage piece is the original and the other was created from stats to change the position of the rocket and the Huntress image and then some of the background was redrawn.

So long as dealers have stock purchased at low prices, and particularly if they are only part-time, it could be a very long wait.
Yeah, most of the dealers don’t have much overhead so even a large drop in volume won’t trigger a fire sale, but I wonder if they continue to bid as actively in auctions. If they do, they could end up with more inventory they can’t sell. If they don’t, auctions end lower and it further widens the enormous gap between auction prices and dealer prices.

I didn’t realize how far off we were from 2022 levels until I did the math. Here’s the total value of art sold at Heritage signature auctions for each of the last 3 years:
2021: $31.7M
2022: $61.9M
2023: $38.2M
They’re 38% down from ‘22, and if you exclude the sale of Frazetta’s Dark Kingdom in the June 2023 auction, they’re down 48%. Obviously we haven’t seen that kind of decline in prices. The quality of art in these auctions is nowhere close to what it was last year when some crazy prices drew out a lot of incredible art. Now consignors are expecting the same crazy prices, dealers have priced their inventory above ‘22 levels, and buyers aren’t interested at those prices. It seems like buyers and sellers are now in a staring contest, waiting for the other to blink.

Surprised it is crickets in here... maybe some buyer fatigue after all?
I think it’s a lack of interesting art in today’s session. Heritage really padded out this auction with a lot of low-end art and they were still 150 lots short of what they had in last November’s auction. Sellers seem to be holding out and hoping for a stronger market to sell in.

Wonder Woman 171 cover sold for $10k at Comic Art Live 11/2022
Now at Panel Page for $22,500
Following up on this since it just sold at Heritage. Nice pricing job by the original seller. Not so much by the later dealer or consignor.
