Yes, it was a big deal immediately after it was published in 1983, and it’s value rose quickly as a back issue. however, by the time you started collecting in the late 80’s, it’s value was relatively stable and would continue to remain so for many, many years. it was only in the past 4 years that the book started to rise again in value.
-
A lot of books are ‘wall’ books simply because their dollar value exceeds whatever dollar value the store owner/dealer is comfortable with leaving in the back issue bins as potential targets for theft

Yes, that’s more like it.

Yes, definitely beating a dead horse.

Again, I don’t see the 1st appearance of Beta Ray Bill as a key, before, during, or after the movie hype fades away
-
I have been lamenting the application of the term ‘key’ for some time and again, it’s been overly applied to the point where it’s lost meaning.

Comparing 1st silver surfer with 1st Shang Chi is apples to oranges
-
1st Shang Chi is not a key. It is the 1st appearance of a character that has been announced for movie treatment. nobody (well, hardly anyone) gave a ratz @$$ about Shang Chi before the movie announcement

So, the collecting community hasn’t grown. It’s been shrinking for the better part of the past two decades. those that still collect and are trying to complete runs of long-standing titles (i.e Action Comics) are few and far between as the # of issues + cost is prohibitive. thus, folks started to shift their preferences towards collecting only ‘keys’, but real keys such as AF 15, Showcase 22, etc. Once those prices spiked due to increased demand, folks searched for the next (lower tier) of keys such as ASM 50, GL 76 or HOS 92. Once again, prices spiked and folks searched for minor keys that were more affordable such as All Star Comics 58, Marvel Special Edition 15, etc. Tagging affordable comics as ‘keys’ has become so commonplace these days that the term ‘key’ has lost all meaning. It is a modern day misnomer.

Well, yeah it should @ $250 per sig! And he didn’t sign a lot of books/mags
-
I think you’re right on the ASM 39 sig series. I had an 8.0 and a 9.2 , both signed by Lee and Romita, but it was so long ago that I don’t recall how significant the premium was or even if it was worth mentioning (this was back when Stan was charged $50 per sig)

The following sig series books have always sold at a significant premium for me in 8.0-9.4 ASM 50 -Romita ASM 59 - Romita ASM 129 - Romita ASM 135 - Romita ASM 238 - Romitas Sr and Jr and in 9.8: ASM 252 - Lee ASM 298 - McFarlane ASM 300 - Lee & McFarlane ASM 300 - McFarlane Hulk 340 - McFarlane & Romita Hulk 340 - McFarlane
