  1. I must confess to not being familiar with the Rosa Parks background story prior to watching episode three of the new Dr Who series. As I'm from the UK, I don't profess to have a deep history of the American civil rights movement. Upon doing a little bit of research prior to the episode being broadcast, I found myself quite intrigued by the backdrop story and thought to myself, "Y'know, this could be quite interesting". After a promising pre-titles teaser sequence, I have to say in all honesty that I didn't much care for the story that followed . . . which was clumsily heavy-handed (overtly preachy, rather than let the viewers draw their own conclusions) and, as such, lacking in subtlety - with comedy elements that seemed grafted-on, rather than flowing naturally. I would have preferred something that was more sensitively handled, as opposed to having a re-working of 'The Meddling Monk' (a semi-villain from the William Hartnell era) brought back as a (racist) plot device. I'm still not sold on Jodie Whittaker's performance (at present she seems to be taking her cue from David Tennant's interpretation of the Doctor, mimicking him a lot) and I neither care for any of the three companions. Still not happy, sorry (and I've been watching the show since 1963 . . who else would remember the Voord, eh?).
  2. Offered for sale, here, are a complete set of cover drawings and preliminaries intended for the cover of PULSE # 2 but unused for that particular issue. The artwork was later used as an interior illustration for a collection of PULSE stories. The cover was actually created as two separate drawings. Not sure why . . . possibly the original idea was to go for a 3-D effect by combining the two elements in print? Included in the offer are two preliminaries: one based on how the two cover elements would look in print and the other showing four cover ideas. The ask price of $1,750 includes priority worldwide shipping. I live in the UK and prefer payment (converted to GBP £) via paypal 'Family and Friends'. For 'Goods and Services', buyer to pay fees. Artworks are in finished pencils. CAF link to images: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1506900
  3. Yeah, I'm not a fan of Chibnall's earlier Dr Who scripts. He came from a fan background and I find his Who material to be fan-boy stuff. Will be interesting to see how other writers fare, though the worry for me here is that Chibnall might tinker with the scripts and dumb them down.
  4. From what I understand, the season will comprise of single-episode storylines? Not so sure that it's a good idea to self-enforce such a writing constraint on a 45-minute format - where everything needs to be done and dusted by the end of the allotted running time. Stronger story material usually benefits from longer (multiple-episode) running times. Deeper characterization (which at the moment is sorely lacking) is likely to be jettisoned in favour of servicing the needs of the short story format. Visually, the second episode 'looked' good but, at best, had a sliver of a plot that was hardly novel or inspired. Lots of running around, coupled with lots of insipid dialogue being spouted by the main characters . . . most of whom I just can't take to. Disappointing stuff up to now. Will it improve? I'm not optimistic. You should hit the viewers with the good stuff from the git-go . . . to get them hooked and coming back for more. Two bland opening episodes doesn't exactly instill me with confidence.
  5. New in today . . . my fourth Movie Poster original artwork painting by the great Reynold Brown! This one for the 1954 Western, DAWN AT SOCORRO. Full write-up large scan and additional images at: https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=1865
  6. Well they did cast a black actor as Nick Fury for the movies. I understand that had something to do with a later comic-book series that I never read, but it was still a WTF moment for me. Now, Doctor Who's just turned into a woman . . . You should only fix things if they're broke.
  7. Back from the framers this morning, Reynold Brown's original artwork painting used for the billboard (24-sheet) movie poster campaign of KELLY AND ME (1957). Framed artwork size is about 39" x 21".
  8. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick on this one, Mike. Michael Browning has made no accusations about the art.
  9. In addition to the cover stats, it looks like they've also pasted the artwork onto a cover stock background.

  12. Should have stuck to sweeping chimneys . . .

  20. I was totally underwhelmed by Jodie's debut story as a female Doctor. The monster was less Predator, more Tooth Fairy. A heavy dose of multiculturalism seems to be the order of the day. I haven't a clue who most of the forthcoming guest stars are, as previewed at the episode's end. Might get better as the season unfolds but I'm not holding my breath . . .
