Ever thought that maybe collectors are being more frugal in their buys (money)? Lots of uncertainty going on nowadays. hm

Absolutely.  I try to weigh a lot of factors before coming to a conclusion.  Its also why I compared how stagnant the book is compared to the other Marvel Keys which have done quite well.  Have you been following Original Art, Magic or Pokemon cards or how about Basketball cards?  Other collectible assets have done ridiculously well over the last few months.

  2. If you've been in the hobby for 20+ years and you've paid attention, then you knew people like Rick come and go and like shining stars, you appreciate them while they're burning bright but know that they'll eventually burn out.  Rick followed a similiar curve of a lot of great boardies who came in blazing and made their mark and then found another focus elsewhere.  Rick and I had a lot of fun over the last few years and I certainly enjoyed it while it lasted.

  3. Its honestly depressing to see how this book has performed over the last year.  I keep tabs on this book and last night HA sold a really nice CGC 4.5 cr/ow with no chipping for 27k+ which is not positive.  It makes no sense to me why this book is selling so "cheap" compared to the other keys - TOS #39, JIM #83, etc.  Compared to other assets, this book should have exploded and yet its been stable/barely moved.

I've posted this before, but here is a best of both worlds example I have in my collection. A Frank Miller Ronin page with the printed art being actual original art and not a stat, and then a glorious unused original pencilled and inked version underneath. I actually took it to a restorer (Gordan Christman) and had him affix the top original with a safe and neutral and removable hinge so that I could easily look at both versions (I do not have this one framed). I did not know the original was underneath the paste over when I bought it, but i might venture that I might have marginally paid UP had I known. It is indeed all about the art and in this particular scenario, having two examples is better than having one IMHO. (thumbsu

    That's awesome

1 book sold over the last 4 days.  March was crazy - April was ok - May was slow and June so far has been frozen solid.  I also have been pretty busy processing a big purchase to get a bunch graded so I've been very lax on posting new books so that hasn't helped.

Appreciate your update.  I think those of us that are having conversations with others in the market are very concerned for the next six months and so what your experience has been is not surprising.

  6. I was bullish on this book for many years and scooped up any copy I found wherever I could find them.  Prior to the last 6 months or so, I would have been very excited about this book but I think its favor in the marketplace has passed.  Its still an awesome book that was underappreciated for a long time and I'm excited to see what it sells for.

Yeah Choe phoned this one in, for sure, but he's an urban legend and certain prints can go for thousands.

So an original (uninspired as it is, imo) at $17k is not surprising.

    Here's how he "made" $200m.

He's been doing amazing work over the years but simply stopped selling anything over the last 10 years (absolutely zero need or desire to do so).  He's friends with Jim Lee and is doing this as a favor.  I agree its nowhere near on the level of what he's been up to but if you want to buy anything from him, this is basically it.  Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it sold for 20K or 100K.

I sent a question about the book to the eBay seller and although he responded, he didn’t answer my question. I asked again and never got a second response (I wanted to know if the staples were rusty)

I'm familiar with Neko because he's based in SoCal.  From my experiences, he has the books he's selling on eBay.  If you want to contact him, he's responsive to texts and you can PM me for his number.  That copy might be faded so you might want to ask for additional pictures - he's usually responsive and provides additional pictures if he thinks you're a legit buyer.

I have not completed any deals with him so cant speak beyond the above.

I considered that, but the image space of the art is still 10x15....same as all modern art on 11x17 boards. So it's not undersized art, which I think would impact the valuation. Murphy Anderson was famous for sticking to 2X sized boards longer than most to get that fine line detail. So there are lots of larger than expected pieces for the era they were produced, and perhaps these were "transition" era where Murphy relented to working the 10x15 art area everyone else was not working, but was burning through his stock of larger art boards.

I can see people not wanting to pay 2x money for 1x art, but I have my doubts if an extra 3 inches of white space led to such a discount.

It's rare that anything goes below actual retail in these auctions. Most of the good quality items are going for full retail or well beyond it. I completely understand not wanting to sink 45 or 50 to work to get 60. If it's a collector that got it then he got what he wanted at a price he'd never see in a million years from a dealer.

This story happened to go for 30% off. Whomever bought it, maybe a dealer maybe not, got a nice bargain compared to market because of perceived over-supply. That's hard to pass up for SA art royalty like Anderson and how sweet so many of the pages in this story were. This was probably the smartest "today" purchase of the auction compared to full value. I think in a few years, when Anderson's estate dump is fully absorbed, it will look even smarter for the buyer today.

I remember the couple of years after Tony Christopher's Kirbys hit the market, flat as a road trip through the midwest, but I would have been a smarter man if I would've taken advantage at the time.

Could it be that there's a discount due to the size of the board being larger than the art itself?  There have been a few stories, including the Spectre ones, where while LA, the art itself is only 2/3rds of the oversized art board.  This makes for an odd display in an Itoya let alone if you wanted to frame a splash or page.  Would you trim the bottom third of white space off?  I think this dilemna has affected the prices on all of these pieces.
