Moderns that are heating up on ebay!
The Less Blob replied to thirdgreenham's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Right. New mutants was on the brink of going direct only due to low sales before liefield took over. Or that is what he claims in interviews. Which kind of sounds like b.s. as that would mean 85 and 86 should be relatively harder to find and they are not. I think rma may have debunked this in his NM 98 thesis. Granted, this is a high profile book, but I can imagine a nice copy still falling through the cracks and getting $150 right now as the next movie is far off and all these facsimile copies are confusing new collectors. With that said, were I spending $150 I would probably plow it into an all star western 10. Just a personal preference. I'll keep on looking tho! -

I guess you are joking as it was a direct only book, no? Anyway, "nice" is subjective. I don't expect a raw 9.8 at that price. -

Not a book I actively hunt, but when I saw one up for auction from a good boardie I bid. Anyway, is stumptown 1 a sell or hold? I sold one for a decent price, but I am almost certain I have more in my unsorted boxes. -

Jssilver's went for $151. Granted, I do not know how much higher the winner was willing to go. I changed my mind and went back to throw a few more $ at it figuring he is a good dude and the 9.0 was probably an undergrade, but I was late by 2 minutes. It was going to be a gift for my son if he pulls As on his report card 1st semester of high school. If he wants to sell it in 4 years for college money or pre-college trip money that would be ok. Looks like I will probably give him a $200 performance bonus if he maintains a 95. I need to light a fire under his arse. -

It is sad because for $90 you could get a presentable copy of the real thing. With that said there may be fewer copies of the facsimile than the real one, though nearly all are high grade. -
Moderns that are heating up on ebay!
The Less Blob replied to thirdgreenham's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Most of the cute sellers put just enough in tbe description to claim they disclosed. Isn't this essentially a second print? Yes, it is shadey. And when 50 or 100 or 150 new collectors realized they paid $50-150 for a $10 second print they may just bail on the hobby. With that said I was talking to a shop owner who is also befuddled by this, but he did acknowledge it was a sell out and could justify a $10-20 price. This sounds about right considering there are a zillion true believers reprints out there already. -

I don't want to be a jerk, but i am still befuddled how people are buying the recent reprint thinking it is the original. Folks, it's Apparent from the cover. I know sellers are being cute in their listings, but you've got to do a little research. Anyway, I would like a nice real one for $150 or less. I tapped out there on one jssilverjanet had that went for $151. Listed as 9.0, probably a 9.4 with most other ebay sellers. -

You're confident the 4s are all 9.8? Is there enough margin to make $ if they are $40 9.6ses? -

I bid on that I think. Gave up early as I have a few copies of the wrightson book. Is it actually a $40 book in VG? I have never sold any because I didn't think the book sold for enough in non HG on eBay to list. -
MOST VALUABLE MODERN VARIANTS - THE RANKINGS
The Less Blob replied to Jaydogrules's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
I have unknowingly been sitting on the hughes supergirl 23 for 8-10 years. I pulled a nyx 3 out of a bag with 6 other comics in it not long ago. Not everyone is paying attention to their collection. -

I don't have a horse in the race, but getting all conspiracy theory over 9 copies getting submitted seems silly. 90 and I'd be totally on board. -
MOST VALUABLE MODERN VARIANTS - THE RANKINGS
The Less Blob replied to Jaydogrules's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Except Marvel and DC used to allow employees at all levels to take home lots of comics. My local shop had several Marvel and DC employees who would bring in their monthly hauls for store credit or just sell them outright. In high school my friend's brother worked there in college and he would bring home tons of stuff. Granted, this was before there were so many variants floating around. You had Spider-Man 1 platinum and not a whole lot else. And pre-bankruptcy. Indeed, the Marvel offices used to have free comics sitting around in their reception area in the 80s. I just have no idea if this is still the culture there. -

Anyway, an extra 10 copies in the census can easily be explained by folks realizing a book is worth stabbing and doing it. Not everyone slabs. It's a $15-50 expense. I have hundreds of books that are worth stabbing. I do not have the funds to do it. -

Do marvel and dc still let their employees take home a lot of stuff? In the 90s they did. Different times, yes, but could explain an inclination to print a few extras. -

yeah, there are variations to cut and wrap. this would not have been a book worth trimming until about 5 minutes ago. with that said, if you are presented with a perfect raw copy someone is claiming is a 9.8 and wants $100+ for it, you have to consider a trim a possibility if the book doesn't look right. It has now gotten to the point where these shenanigans may be worth it. -
How much influence do these boards have...

Treasure chest. I stopped ignoring them in dollar boxes after here. And newsies in general. I was already Keane on 30/35 cent variants before here. -
Is it worth me buying comics from a shop
The Less Blob replied to Colin Nash's topic in Comics General
And it really depends on where you are going. Every city has different retail options. My guess is that with $50-60 in shipping and duties you are not buying cheap books, so you need to confirm in advance the depth of inventory at a shop. -
Is it worth me buying comics from a shop
The Less Blob replied to Colin Nash's topic in Comics General
It depends on the shop. On less expensive stuff, when you factor in shipping, most shops are often cheaper than ebay. Also, many smaller shops will give preferential pricing for a cash purchase. Many of the books I sell on eBay were purchased at shops for less. -
What issue is this? Asking for a friend.

cgc 5.0 ow/w VS. 7.0 c/ow
The Less Blob replied to The Less Blob's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
2x the 5.0 sale is what I am thinking of offering, but I think he is asking 3.2x. The price is reasonable compared to the other slabs for sale, but nothing is selling anywhere near ask. This is a book I am working on a minihoard on. -

Well, I like the bulk label printer...that's nice...EXCEPT the labels no longer say which item they are for in the part I cut off. So now I have to go back on line to check which label is for what, almost guaranteeing a mistake every 100 or so labels. -
Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
The Less Blob replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
Do not get sucked into the "Human Target is going to break out one day." I did. I liked the show. I even bought a few copies of the newer series FOR COVER PRICE to read (something almost unthinkable for me...I could have invested that money in Apple stock!!). The rest of the world did not. Go figure. Actually, I hope you and others do. For a while I grabbed every Human Target book I saw at the right price. I'm ready! -
Let's say a mid-60s SA book with a fairly regular distribution, but not much in the way of 8.5 or above. Those sell for a big premium. Lots of copies on ebay, but tend to be 4.5 or less. If, let's say, the 5.0 ow/w sold for $100, what might be a sensible price for the above 7.0 c/ow? I know, I know, every book is different. This is a semi-key. No ebay sales data for cgc sales above 5.0. I guess GPA might help find some non-ebay data. But is there a typical ratio?
