Agree. I also think for younger PCH collectors like myself the biggest books are mostly outside of EC e.g. CDNP 24, FAC 20, Punch 12, BCM 50, CoC 19

Just for the benefit of PreCode Horror/Crime newbies, that would be:

Crime Does Not Pay 24, Fight Against Crime 20, Punch comics 12, Black Cat Mystery 50 and the 1953 Chamber of Chills 19.

I was thinking the same thing---that the chemical composition of the paper must play a role...  hm

That makes sense. The current thinking is foxing is mold induced rust of iron contaminents in the paper stock. Joeypost observed above:  "...contained the same issue of a particular title which led me to believe it may be what went into the manufacturing process along with environmental issues. several of the same". This would indeed support the idea of iron contamination in the paper stock being a contributing factor, since the same paper stock could well have been used for such contaminated groups of books.

Well, now that I think of it, I think it would matter in terms of tying the book directly with the sigs on it. You know what, never mind, CGC should correct this, it's a cool collectible that merges the old with the new and it would be nice to have the label reflect this.

Just what I was thinking. It should be corrected. It is not all about $$$ but just accuracy, especially opnsidering what we pay and how long we have to wait for books to be graded.

I WILL mention one thing though, when someone asks something like "why would anyone try restoring a junk book like this Princess of Gem World #3?" (or similar) My standard answer to that is "Practice". That would be my answer as to why someone would try to muck with a slab/label or a lesser book...practice.

But in this case it DOES seem like a simple error by CGC that they should be made aware of. Thanks for the measured and considered response! (thumbsu

It seems odd to me that CGC will put a purple label on a restored comic even if it's only been cleaned, yet they don't put one on a comic that's been pressed - a service that they offer.

Bottom line. Properly pressed books cannot be detected. This is one reason why CGC States "Restoration Includes..." in their label. The word "includes" gives them a valid disclaimer because they know things like pressing may not be detected.

I remember a classic Phantom Lady that had been pressed and had gloss sprayed on it. The book was obviously pressed because the "re-glossing" (fake treatment with no basis in reality) and the pressing coincided and accented both the bad glossing and the bad pressing. If that book were submitted to any reputable TPG it would be flagged as restored and pressing would have been included.

I finally figured it out...THE GRADING CONTEST! We are grading submissions in the grading contest now! It all makes sense!! They have figured out a way to monetize the boards, reduce TATs and improve quality of grading/consistency all in one fell swoop!

We got 9 books done this week and it should be reflected in the TATs shortly.

CGC will be taking the $199 they get from the dealers and using that to subsidize it all, paying us each $1 for submitting our grade "guesses".

OMG maybe my meager 10 books I have in for grading will have some motion!

There are companies that can grade by a scan while graders can access the items and work from home.  There has to be a way to do it faster without losing integrity of the grade.  There should be no reason to keep books past 30 days.

I too would love to know what TPGs grade by scan. I imagine it would be something like this:

    Place font cover on scanner

    Scan

    Place back cover on scanner

    Scan

    Open book

    Scan Inside Front Cover

    Scan Inside Back Cover

Run book through auto page counter

    Verify page count

    Open book to first page

    Scan

    Open book to pages 2 – 3

    Scan

    Repeat for remainder of pages

Run each scan through Sarillizer Restoration Detector

Run each scan through Deluxe Acme Auto Grader

Downgrade book for popped staples/torn staple holes/spine splits due to repeated open book scans

I remember the small shows in Boston at the 57 Park Plaza and also the Comic Buyers Guide where you send off a money order and hope for the best (never had an issue).
I also recall the vault in Brighton MA and Million Year Picnic….also there was a store in downtown crossing where you had to show ID to buy DKR. The girl behind the counter looked like the lead singer of The Bangles.
i was usually buying older ASMs and high grade bronze. The 80s were a great time to be collecting. $100 went a long way (at least it seemed that way).

Man that shook the cobwebs loose! Now some of these memories may be a bit shaky so if anyone can add to them or correct them please do so!

In the 80s and 90s I was living/collecting in the Boston area (Cambridge). Back then the Boston area was a haven of comic book shops with lots of SA and GA offerings. Outer Limits in Waltham owned by the very cool Steve Higgins, where I started a 12 cent Iron Man run, New England Comics Quincy Store with Tom being the key guy there. Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square with Jerry Weist and later, Tony being the dominant presence. In  their earlier days they had two stores in the same building: one for new and one filled with row after row of back issues. In later years they only had the main store and the back issues were relegated to a case with a locked plexiglass top that had hand slots to allow you to leaf through the offerings. I remember picking up 2 or 3 literally 9.6 or better Doc Strange 169 and Hulk 102 (the 1968 equivalent to #1s) for $12 each from there. I would also take my godson there (we collected together) and we would get the new issues (starting with #1) of Dazzler, Moon Knight (who I liked more than Spidey), New Mutants and Alpha Flight.

Then there was That's Entertainment in Worcester (Paul Howley, as I recall a cousin of Steve Higgins who owns Outer Limits), Newbury Comics (a few locations but mainly the Boston store) where I remember seeing an Iron Man #55 for the ridiculous sum of $50 and I was like "huh?" - bear in mind I was a pre-code and pre-hero guy when I saw it). There was a relatively short-lived store in Watertown Square which had some cool Kirby big monster pre-heroes for  $10-$15. The owner and I would laugh at their silliness but I still bought them! Then there was a place called something like Amazing Fantasy out in the Boston Suburbs (I disremember WHAT city it was). The 57 Park Plaza Shows were great and I met some of the dealers there like Harley Yee, Ted Van Liew, Carbonaro and Jim Payette for the first time. I think these, or some of these, were put on by Great Eastern Conventions? A couple of times I actually made the ridiculous drive up to

I remember David Cummings of Primate Productions would put on a Boston show monthly, in the 90s. As I recall it was there I was introduced to the concept of CGC when I met Steve Borock (funny story) who was going to the various dealers and explaining the concept of this new company CGC and its benefits. These shows may well have been at Park Plaza. Just hard to be precise because every weekend back then was a major comic book weekend with my hitting pretty much as many places as I could.

Thanks Mike. But just to be clear you cannot post here without being a member of CGC. Just choose the free level and you are a member. And there are several 1 post folk who, as of this writing, "joined yesterday" as it says in their creds. Anyway, best of luck with this!

"How dare people enter a competition before me, look at all these people who want to join in the fun. Don't they know they don't have enough experience for fun?" This is all I am reading right now in the comments.

Absolutely nothing to do with experience.

PS - I have learned so much reading your 6 posts made in 3+ years!

I think the thread was closed while they looked into the issue, and to protect the usual bunch of over zealous CGC bashers who love taking potshots at CGC  from making fools of themselves for a while with their conspiracy theories etc…. :nyah:

I agree there is a CGC Bashing Conspiracy: anytime someone points out legitimate flaws with CGC they must be a part of it.

It's disingenuous and/or hyperbolic to say, "CBCS and the company does not know what they are doing", and attribute it to my statement.

Well saying they are not "as good at detecting resto" would imply that. But perhaps I was too harsh. But "not as good at detecting" certainly leaves a wide field of meaning.

Not based on what I've seen over the past 7 years. :shy:

So how many Voldy books have you had in hand to detect the missed or incorrect resto attributions? I don't mean internet word of mouth but actual opportunity to assess for yourself? We both know there are many examples of poor grading etc. on the sides of both companies, yet here GCG almost always get a pass while Voldy often gets slammed vigorously.

Also, as far as their being "delusional" feeling they are superior having one label color... for a long time a debate was raging on there boards with anti and pro color labels. I was anti colored labels like PLOD and GLOD. Yet now CGC has taken a step in the same direction as Voldy with the Conserved label being the same color as a Universal label. Yet not so long ago some things under the Conserved Blue label would have returned a PLOD. Lovely consistency there.
