My LCS had a day after Xmas sale on back issues; .50 ea. Normally they’re $2.
all of the books shown came from the 12  or so long boxes full of new stock put out the same day. I should’ve got more...
The next men appears to be signed by Byrne, worth a shot for .50.

Probably no price difference for that book. You have a newsstand version (sold at newsstands and bookstores) vs. a direct edition (sold at comic shops and such).

Just finished up this one. It’s entirely experimental at this point, using layers of metals over a steel sheet.

CGC Census is the closest thing to that and it only shows submissions to CGC, some books aren’t graded, some books are graded by other companies, some books are submitted multiple times... so it’s more of a very rough idea, best suited to comparing submissions with other similarly valuable books for relative scarcity.

I may be wrong (it happens from time to time), but didn't every single presser in the world start off as a DIY presser?

I recently came in to a ton of newsstands from someone who worked pulping them for B&N so this has been all super informative as a lot of info is hard to find on them. Are you still trying to complete your set? I’d be happy to check my stuff. There was a ton of DC

    9.6.
I made that decision buying an ASM300.
    $650 9.6 vs $2100 9.8. No regrets with the 9.6

A lot of collectors will not buy 9.6 for copper and above. Bronze is ok 9.6. Me personally, I go 9.4 or 9.6 because I too think triple price for 9.8 is ridiculous. But there’s no denying We are the minority’s on this as the market has shown. My nyx 3 in 9.4 looks amazing and I saved a ton of money for other books.

I prefer newsstand. This book brings a modest premium in newsstand, most prevalent in 9.8’s.
I own a 9.8 newsstand with very slight misrap but no bottom tear. I’m happy with it.
Another consideration with ASM361: The 2nd print (silver background, direct only.) These are scarce relative to the first prints and much cheaper to purchase.  It’s not that the later printing happened months or years later either; they share same month of publication. This book was obviously rejected by the speculators when new.
1st print has just over 10,000 on census.
2nd print has just over 600, yet already holds 50% of 1st print’s FMV.

Looks like a small bindery tear, considered a manufacturing defect, and typically not a problem  for a 9.8 from what I’ve seen.

I suspect there are some people collecting them specifically because collecting them is a challenge. Folks who have the "collector gene" will collect darn near anything because it's the process of collecting that is enjoyable, more than the end result of having a finished collection. I get customers walk in wearing a $5,000 watch whose faces light up like a kid on Christmas morning because they found some random $4 back issue they "need". It's not about the money, it's about the joy of the hunt.
If I wanted to "collect" the main covers of the current Suicide Squad title, all in roughly 9.0 condition, I could finish that task in less than a week without using the internet, and in less than two hours with using the internet. Not much fun in that process.
But if I wanted to "collect" all the Marvel and DC comics that are cover-dated with the month and year of my birth, all in 9.4 or better? Even with the internet at hand, that's a project that will last me a while. Some of those titles just aren't that easy to find. But I would still be done in a few months of casual searching (and some hand-wringing over how much of a premium I wanted to pay for the last few romance and western books I needed).
Searching for newsstands in random dollar boxes, and chasing for uncommon versions of very common books? That's exactly what collecting is all about. Will they appreciate as much as the 30 and 35-cent price variants did 15 years ago? Probably not. But they still represent a difficult but achievable challenge that gives one a reason to dig through boxes they might otherwise ignore.
