I am not the typical OA buyer as I rarely buy anything and what I do buy is usually in the $500 range. I knew the Death: the Time of Your Life post card art was coming to auction and it is my favorite piece as I used that post card as a book mark for over a decade. So I decided I would save up a bit and take a stab at it; I very foolishly thought 5K would have given me a decent shot since it was a smaller piece and only used in promotional advertisements.

I am at least glad I found out early that I was being naive... lol.

I was guessing 10-12 and thought I might be a player.

    NOPE.

Didn't do too badly, considering the level of competition . . . all genuine votes . . . and none of that voting for yourself hogwash.  My two best entries:

BANK HOLIDAY (1938) Movie Poster painting, artist unknown - 17 votes

I voted for that strip. Those are some great inks.

  3. I don’t have much illustration art, but when I saw this at auction I had to have it. It’s a Sunday Minneapolis Tribune cover from 1946 by Oz Black.

I’m always on the hunt for newspaper-related pieces, and not only does this fit the bill but it’s from the paper I currently work for.

Scans of the color guide and printed product are on my CAF.

I have most of my Sandman OA signed by Neil as well as the artists who did the work.

Why?  Well, to me, Neil's words are just as important as the art, IMHO.  Honestly, if I had anything that Alan Moore wrote, I'd feel the same way.

Does it add anything to the value?  Probably not, but I'd argue getting Neil to sign something is about the same degree of difficulty to get most of the other artists signatures these days.

And, Neil signed my pages in the margins with a ballpoint pen.  I'd suggest the same for anyone signing OA.

Gaiman was the first writer who came to mind. I think I have seen more pages with his signature than without. ;)

Elementary school kids in 1983 would be chomping at the bit with their lunch money to get in on this Garfield action.

At eighty cents a day - that's a LOT of lunch. Maybe I can talk Mom into sending me with fifteen cents for an extra milk.

Did someone, I mean no one ask for the official Garfield update??  Ok which one of you did this?.....................to be fair the rest went dirt cheap.

That's the one I wanted. Early art. Garfield and Odie. Newspaper gag. But it went way higher than I was willing to go.
I ended up with a nice Sunday (that is likely by a studio artist rather than Davis), but now I have my one Garfield example and am content.

  7. Content? Yes.

    Done? No way.

There's ALWAYS something out there I want. But prices have pushed much of it beyond my reach. So I decided to trim the fat and have had several pieces up at Heritage for the last few weeks. I've had some gains, and some losses, but it's been good overall and is going to allow me to focus on a couple of larger buys and go for quality over quantity.

I apologize in advance for being a Nakatomi shill, but they recently did a kickstarter for a jigsaw puzzle (20x30) featuring the art to the "i'll be with you on your wedding night" print by Wrightson. They have a limited supply left on there website if any of you are jigsaw puzzle and Wrightson Collectors it's pretty sharp looking. Considering all the line work going on, I bet it's a person_without_enough_empathy to put together.

Can confirm. I got in on the Kickstarter, received the puzzle, opened the box, said "eff that" and haven't attempted it yet.

Every piece looks the same. I'll wait for winter when I can' leave the house to try it.

The worst? Well, that was a guy who kept posting WTB's for various artists and titles, saying he would pay blue chip prices and over market. Came to me with a power-point like presentation about all the ways my piece was substandard, and really quite bad, but that he would still be willing to buy it....for about 80% below true market.

    Fine. $50. Final offer. ;)
