I’m a bronze / copper / modern collector (just trying to get what I’m nostalgic of growing up in the 80s/90s), and this year, I asked Santa for: NM 98 in 9.6 and got it My family does a gift exchange at Christmas which has become us all setting a budget, and then everyone just buying whatever they want up to that price. The NM98 9.6 was what I got for it. Book isn’t here yet so I brought a picture of the book and literally showed it all to my family when it was my turn. They thought I was nuts, haha. The 2 other books after that on my wish list is a GSX1 and X-Men 94 in 9.2 (that’s my “forever copy”grade).

In that case, an easy way to get ballpark market values is to use Ebay Sold auctions (Advanced Search). Search for example for "New Mutants 98 CGC 9.0" and you'll see the last 3 months of sales. You can put in a few different grades (including what you think your book is in) and get a rough sense for value and whether you think valuable enough to get graded.

I think this comes down primarily to 2 things: - why do you want to slab, is it purely for selling? Or do you also want to keep around (but potentially sell down the road?) - what grade you think your books are in For most modern books, except for a few keys (eg. NM98, BA12, NYX3), and rare variants, books only get worth something decent (let’s say >$150) in 9.6 or 9.8, and for many books, only 9.8. So a lot of the decision re: “is it worth it” comes down to whether you’re confident it would be a 9.6 or a 9.8 (and at this level, the difference between the 2 grades is pretty hard to spot if you’re not experienced in grading). So there’s a lot of factors, but ultra simplified, I’d say minimum value I’d consider (graded) is $100, and if you’re new at graded books, I’d err closer to $150/200, because you’re likely to over-grade your books.

Sweet book and that’s a good price for that... I was deciding between a 9.8 and 9.6 of this book a few months ago (for the PC), and I ended up going with the 9.6... if I could’ve gotten a 9.8 for this price then, I would have!

This book doesn't really have any value... you can still get these books for basically cover price. There were also a ton of variant covers made for this, and there's nothing particularly special about the book. Just take a look on Ebay sold items - depending on the variant cover, 9.8 versions of this book basically go for a little over cost of grading ($50-75) depending on if it was one of the more limited variant covers (the Greg Horn cover probably the most popular). I would definitely say not worth grading, even more so given you're in the UK and shipping costs would be substantial. The only Harley Quinn related book that has any real value (and worth grading) would be Batman Adventures 12 (1st app, out of continuity, in any grade generally above a 7.0), and the Batman: Harley Quinn one-shot (1st app in continuity, in 9.6 or 9.8). And tangentially, Gotham City Sirens #1 in high-grade (9.6 / 9.8). Any other book is basically not worth the grading costs.

For the last year now, when I tape bags, I fold the piece of tape slightly on the bottom onto itself, so there's a little tab that makes it easier to lift off. More importantly, it makes it much easier to lift and pull the entire piece of tape in one motion off the bag every time I want to open it. With normal taping, I would often open by getting a finger under the flap (so opening middle-to-bottom), and that extra step of having to lift the tape off the whole bag made me "greedy" to try and just leave the tape on and pull the comic out carefully.

In the club! Picked up from a fellow boardie during the recent VCC - had been keeping my eye out for this for awhile at shows (always loved Hobgoblin), but given it's a semi-key that isn't particularly hot, didn't "need" it so was waiting around for the right copy. Got for a fair price so happy to be finally be in! 9.6 WP is my sweet-spot, and happy with the wrap (I actually don't mind / even like books with a thin white line of back cover up the left side!)

GSX1 and X94 are currently my near-term "grail-level" purchases. I only want to buy these once for the personal collection, and have been keeping an eye out for these on EBay and other places. I'm a "bang-for-your-buck" guy, and while most of my "PC" books are 9.6, they're primarily copper / modern, and so I find 9.6 a good "value", not having to pay up the 2x+ price for 9.8. For these books though, I've decided I'm going to go for 9.2 - think that's a nice sweet spot, before prices start getting really exponential (9.2 -> 9.4 -> 9.6 -> 9.8), but I like that it's still technically NM. Given I want to buy just once, really trying to find one with White Pages and a good wrap. Loved reading through this thread!

Your suspicion is right, they won't... if there's any way the book could be switched out with another, they won't do it. It's understandable to maintain the integrity of the yellow label - imagine they let some of these go, a forgery is discovered, the whole system comes crashing down.

Agree the sigs looked pretty bad. I'm no "expert authenticator", but I've seen a lot of Jim Lee sigs, and those looked especially bad to me... The McFarlane also looked off. Sad state of affairs for sure. Sometimes it takes a well-publicized "scam" to really highlight the downfalls of a sig "authentication" service, and the inherent limitations of it. I am 100% supportive of CGC never getting into this.

Yah, that thought has occurred to me too - that in some ways I'd rather just get the trade, but it's good to support the book and get the single issue floppies too. But especially with Image titles where the "break" between arcs is usually to put out the trade (like it was for Redneck), you really don't have to wait that long for the trade... I figure if everyone waited for the trade, the series gets cancelled?

Agree, really like this, and I have no plans to stop reading this book, definitely one of my favorites. I basically follow most of the Donny Cates series (Redneck, Babyteeth, and I've picked up Thanos now that he's taken over starting on #13), and Tom King (loved his Vision and Sheriff of Babylon mini-series, and his Batman run and Mr. Miracle are the only DC books I'm reading). I hear you on the scheduling for Image books - given the creators generally have control over when they put out their issues, there's often breaks between arcs. At least with Redneck, it was only a month between #6 and #7. Monstress, another book I enjoy, is going to be almost 8 months between issue 12 and 13 (May 2017 to Jan 2018!, and this is after a 5 month break between 6 and 7). I think these breaks definitely hurt a series... a lot of people forget about them, or aren't aware when they come back.

Picked up the Houston Charity cover for #7 last Wed and got to my read pile this weekend. Wow, what a start to the next arc!
