Longwinded explanation ahoy- Back in the early 90's right before he passed away, Jack Kirby signed books for "Dynamic Forces" - Uncanny X-Men #304 (750 copies), Marvel Milestone X-Men #1 (2000 copies), Marvel Milestone Edition Fantastic Four #1 (supposedly 1961 copies, but the higher numbers have never been seen for sale). They came with a certificate of authenticity from Dynamic Forces. [Visual evidence suggests Kirby didn't sign these and that they were actually ghost-signed by his wife, Roz Kirby - but that's another whole topic altogether.] These Kirby-signed books were not witnessed by CGC, as CGC didn't exist for years after Kirby's passing. However, CGC was around to witness many Stan Lee signings. So what some people did was get their Kirby Dynamic Forces books signed and witnessed by Stan Lee. These books typically got a combo yellow/green label. But in the example you posted above, it appears whoever got it slabbed requested that CGC treat the unwitnessed Kirby signature as a DEFECT. That's why instead of a green label, the book got marked down harshly and is graded as a 6.5. Marvel Tales #235. Before the signing, there were a grand total of 4 CGC SS copies - two 9.8s, a 9.4, and a 8.0. After the signing, there are now 13 CGC SS copies - including six 9.8s, four 9.6s. And this one's mine- Not bad for a book I've had for thirty years. The OCD-part of me originally didn't like that the sig is crooked, but now I kinda like it. He clearly started signing, then realized there wasn't enough room, so he squished his name crooked to get it to fit. Anyways, thank you to Todd and CGC for doing this. It was fun to be part of an event where seemingly everyone was a part of. Here's hoping CGC does events like this again with Todd and other creators.

In addition to what the others above have already said- I don't see the remark? Or did you mean the "John, Best Wishes" - which is an inscription, not a remark. Not a lot of Archie Goodwin signed comics out there, but there isn't very much demand for an underrated comic book writer/editor. Also, while Goodwin wrote a lot of Star Wars comics, I don't think Archie Goodwin worked on Star Wars #1? So while what you have is kinda rare, probably very few buyers out there who would pay a premium for a mid-grade Star Wars #1 signed on the cover and inscribed by someone who didn't work on that particular issue. Just my guess.

Great buy! Super jealous. -Kirby sig looks legit to me. -I'm not an expert about red labels and value, but just based on my uninformed opinion as someone who likes red labels and owns a bunch, I think key books are still key books - and key books do better in blue CGC. An FF 10 book like yours - I THINK - would do better valuewise as a blue label CGC. Just make sure you take plenty of photographs of the signature before you slab it - and maybe print a photo out and keep it in the bag with the slab with it so you can always see the sig. -Sigs on the inside won't get green label. You'll get a blue label. If you're lucky, it'll say who signed it - but sometimes they don't say.

SCOTT McFarlane? Goodness, DO NOT HAVE SCOTT MCFARLANE SIGN YOUR SPIDEY 300... Okay seriously, welcome to the boards. Signatures on comics sometimes lower the value, sometimes raise it - it all depends on the book, its condition, who is signing, if it's raw or CGC witnessed, etc. Use eBay past sales or GPA Analysis to get an idea of what the market is. I just took a quick look on eBay - in the past two weeks, a 9.0 CGC SS signed by Todd McFarlane went for $550, while a 9.0 CGC unsigned went for $360. So right now a Todd McFarlane sig would appear to raise the value. Then again, after this month's Todd McFarlane CGC signing, the market might get FLOODED by lots of newly-signed books. So maybe the value will go down? Who knows? As with all things comic books, if you're trying to get rich off them, you're gonna be miserable. Collect what you love and enjoy it if they happen to go up in value.

Brilliant thread. I'm in awe of what you guys have. Rarest sigs I've got are probably D**k Sprang, John Stanley, Dale Messick, Archie Goodwin - and creators who left us too young, like Dwayne McDuffie and Gene Day. Just my experience: John Buscema and Marie Severin rarely seem to come up for sale - feels like people who have signed books by them are holding onto them.

Variants - different versions of the particular comic book you're sending in. https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/49676-what-is-cgcs-definition-of-variant/ Again, if you don't know what it is, then it probably won't apply to you. And even if it does and you leave this field blank, chances are good that CGC will catch it and will apply the variant to the label. Hope this helps!

I hesitate to do that simply because crooks use Google, too. One of the most awful forgers on eBay posts here on the CGC boards, so I'd rather not give that guy any tips on improving his fakes. Plus while I have a list of "tells" that I use to help spot fakes, I'm only human and I've been fooled, too. Probably better to have people post their sigs here, then someone knowledgeable - like Mr Zipper or others - can chime in. With the caveat that I'm not an expert - just a nerd who has a couple of Kirbys in his collection - I will share this- Authentic Kirbys have a consistent slant to them. Look at the one at the top. The "J" and "k" in Jack, the "K" and "b" and "y" in Kirby are all parallel. As if they were signed by one of the greatest artists of the 20th century - a guy who had an amazing hand and had the God-given ability to make lines look sharp and orderly without even trying. On the lower ones, the J, k, K, b, y are all in different slants and angles.

Signature verification - there're a couple of autograph companies that do verification. One of CGC's rival grading companies also does verification. CGC doesn't accept verification. CGC only does signature witnessing. Since Kirby died in 1995 and CGC didn't exist until 2000, there are no yellow-label Kirbys.

LOL. Just based on the questions we're getting in the forum, I can only imagine the avalanche of email/calls that the CGC customer service reps are getting. This McFarlane signing is starting to feel like the biggest event that CGC has ever done...

We actually have a wealth of information about Kirby among the years of threads in the Signature Room. At some point, someone should put together a Kirby FAQ. Someone with more expertise (and free time) than me.

From myslabbedcomics here, this one is a Roz Kirby verified by the-other-company- This is my Dynamic Forces signed Jack Kirby, which consensus seems to be that Roz Kirby signed these- From an earlier CGC thread here, this is a great comparison image. The top example looks like a legit Kirby and the bottom two are most likely Roz Kirby- To me, your example doesn't look legit. And there are definitely forgers of Kirby's sig. One of the worst forgers on eBay is actually a member on these boards here. It was whispered around comic cons when I was a kid that Roz Kirby ghost-signed a lot of autographs for her husband. She was an artist in her own right, and like many wives can, she could do a reasonable fake of her husband's sig.
