  1. A little late in the day (Happy New Year, everyone!) but thanks, Sal, Danny & Andy. Exactly right with the latter. I had it priced out both ways and moderate restoration would have been grossly expensive, to the point where I could have just as well bought an unrestored LG copy. Just had the spine & some tears sealed, and the book is now sturdy and very readable. Very nice page quality too.
  2. OK, here we go. As many of you know already, I'm absolutely crazy about the earliest Siegel & Shuster Superman books, and decided at the beginning of the year to set aside some other goals, sell off some other books and go after them more seriously. Which brings me to this beat but complete beauty: a book I'm just in awe of, and truly didn't think I'd ever own... Mega-kudos go out to Collin (comicdey) for making this possible! Not only did he discover this book in a collection he was assessing over the summer, and negotiate at length with some rather flaky sellers in order to get it...and not only was he willing to pass on it himself, knowing what a grail it was for me...but he very kindly sold it to me at cost rather than marking it up (and had he marked it up, which certainly would have been understandable, it would have been the difference between my deciding to pass vs. deciding to go for it). I've already sent him some modest GA book thank-yous , but more than anything I want to express my sincere appreciation here on the boards. It was a kindness I truly won't forget. --Jon
  3. Great books CM! I love those early Movie Comics, and have been tempted to pick one up before. I went through a phase of collecting 1950s "TrueVision" (3-D Effect) comics years ago...another similarly cool but similarly ill-fated comics experiment.
  4. Yep, easy one. Even if the Action were a classic war cover, a coverless Tec 27 would just be too cool to pass up.
  5. Page D11 of the NY Times...the bottom just fell out of the high-grade X-Men slab market. Mark's been frantically selling off while there's still time...
  6. Dude, if that were my book I'd be and that is much better than decent page quality. Congrats!
  7. Personally I think Kitty should've stayed with him...nice guy, and looks aren't everything ya know...
  8. I'll say! Two great covers! I've tried to stay focused on the earliest Supermans, but if an affordable #34 came along it would be tough to say no...
  9. Hey guys... I'm thrilled, and more than a little astonished, to say that I've just added this book to my collection: It has really wonderful "freshness", and off-white pages with no tanning! Great cover colors. The cover has a bit of odd black marker touch which you can see on the spine...no good reason why it's there, as it doesn't hide defects and isn't really replacing any color. There's some equally odd bits of tape on the inside front cover, which are also without any obvious purpose. (Comic collectors are really a bunch of nuts, aren't they...)
  10. One of the toughest matchups yet. I've gone DC in almost every pairing, but I'd probably go with the Marvel Mystery here, even with the pedigree & condition nudges for the More Fun. Just love everything about that MM #9.
  11. Archie #1, if only to read the Squoimy the Woim story.
  12. Bah, you should have taken that sucker for every penny. Wuss! Karma, baby. ...Nah, you're right, I am a wuss.
  13. Wow! Never seen a complete run. All of the covers are great for different reasons, and I love the jarring jumps in genre (try saying that 10 times fast) that the title had in its short life. Many congrats!
  14. 1 2 You will get it soon 41 ?? Why dont you have that yet ASM #1 is just too pricey for me...no surprise there. If I were to spend $800-$1000 on a book, I'd rather buy a cool/rare early golden age book than a bedraggled Spidey #1. Maybe I'll sell off some stuff to get one eventually, but it's not a priority for me at the moment. Same with ASM #2, though there's a decent chance I'll someday come across the right cheap #2 and take the plunge. Yeah, the missing #41 is pretty random. But it's a grossly overpriced key in the Guide (1st Rhino? come on!), and tends to look kind of tanned or cruddy in the lower grades (a nasty white+black cover, the worst of both worlds), so finding the right combination of low price and decent eye appeal is the trick. Ironically, I won an ebay auction for a very cheap mid-grade #41 a week or two ago, but let the seller off the hook (probably too easily) after he gave me a sob story about how he expected to get more for it. I'm sure I'll find one eventually.
