  1. Speaking as someone who owns some, Church Timely's are spectacular. I am among the lucky few who have seen many of these New Adv comics in person (thank you, RHG ). It is difficult to convey how disconcerting and delightful it is to look at a comic book that you know is more than 80 years old but that looks like it was printed yesterday.
  2. DCs from 1938 - 1940 were printed on much better paper stock than was used for Timely's. They are, from my experience and with some exceptions, the pinnacle copies of the Church collection.
  3. I called Raboy an illustrator because I think he was a creator of pretty pictures who got into comics to earn a living. He drew for comics and newspaper strips but his stories don't "read" as well as Beck because, to my eyes, he prized his art above his stories. I called Beck a cartoonist/story teller because he emphasized how important story-telling was to him in a number of interviews. He drew just what was needed to get across the stories of Capt Marvel and other characters, usually in a simplified style. Beck sometimes drew realistic, like the cover to Whiz 18. https://www.comics.org/issue/1448/cover/4/
  4. The last time it sold was in an odd weekday Heritage session, Friday I think, and I rushed home from work to bid only to find I was 5 minutes late.
  5. It should have come with a certificate signed by Lon Allen, and he'd probably be willing to help out if you need another one.

  7. Buckle Up Boardies, we're doing a poll to identify our favorite LB Cole covers. There are four parts to complete Round 1 and you can select 5 covers from each subset of 20.

  9. I posted in the LB Cole Thread: I ran into a problem with the approach because the Board poll function only allows 20 items in a poll. So this will take a couple rounds to get to the final poll. First two polls are up. I'll do the next two Thursday evening. I did attempt to split up the better covers amidst each of the poll groups. The top 5 from each group will move into Round 2 where will crown the winner. I eliminated 3 comics from the list because of the limit to only 20 books in each poll. I chose these for having the least amount of LB Cole art
  10. Unless I made a mistake, all my photos are in the same order as the books listed in the poll. I believe you are asking about the third to last book which is: https://www.comics.org/issue/275655/cover/4/
  11. We did a Top Baker cover poll a few years ago, which did include all genres and even a few non-Bakers in the mix. We have not conducted a Top Baker Romance-only poll, though I have a good idea what will land at the top for that one.
