Eternals Vol 1 #17 with no bar code and different corner box?
shadroch replied to mrjwkellyjr's topic in Ask CGC
It is what is commonly called a Whitman Marvel. It's an early direct edition book that was distributed as part of a multi-pack. High grade copies can sell for nice money. -
I have at least a dozen repro covers and I only paid to have one attached. The rest are loose. I'd leave them loose, in a mylar with the book.

Saving Comic Book Collection from California Fires 🔥
shadroch replied to Cool & Collected's topic in Comics General
I've thought about this, but have not done much. I considered putting together two or three short boxes of my super premium stuff, but that would make it easier for anyone robbing my house. As I have a small car and a large dog, space would be at a premium. So far, my only solution has been to make sure the books are well insured. -
Is a second printing with a 1st appearance still a first appearance?
shadroch replied to Blastaar's topic in Comics General
I can't come up with a conclusive answer. I'm not sure it really matters. Bilbo Baggins first appeared in the Hobbit some seventy five years ago. If a kid picks up the 2019 edition of The Hobbit, is he not reading the story Bilbo first appeared in? A book that reprints Spiderman 129 is reprinting the first appearance of The Punisher. Why would it matter if he appeared in 7,453 other books between publishing dates. The question should be do reprints of first appearances hold the same cache or value as the original and the answer is almost always no. -
CBCS CAME BACK A WHOLE GRADE LOWER
shadroch replied to J-KComics's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
My understanding is that a CVA sticker is supposed to mean the book is at the very top of the grades range. If everything under a 9.0 is given an 8.5, a CVA book would have gotten an 8.8 if such a grade existed. I think it is a bad joke. I recently noticed I had two CVA books, that were sold with no mention of the sticker. The check mark, I think, is useful. -

CVA is done by a different company at an additional fee, while the other is a courtesy from the grading company. Exact same thing, no? -

No, you are mistaken. One is hype, one is a warning. If you don't see the difference, I don't know what else to say. -
CBCS CAME BACK A WHOLE GRADE LOWER
shadroch replied to J-KComics's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
A CVA sticker claims that the book is a superior copy for a grade. A check mark says don't be fooled by the books cover. There is a reason the book looks better than the grade. The exact same thing, right? -

The check mark is nothing like a CVA sticker. A book with a check mark has a hidden defect you can't see while the book is in a slab. It's there so people don't buy a 6.0 book because it looks like a 7.0 and they think they can resubmit for a better grade. It's actually a very useful feature. -
Help and information required

Turtlemania Special had three editions. Yours is the most common by far, and had a print run of about 3,000. I have not seen one sold for years so I can't put a dollar value on it, but all of the Turtle books have value. It depends on which print they are. -
Marvel's Giant Size Appreciation Thread
shadroch replied to jaybes's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
I've always found it strange that Master of Kung Fu got four Giant Sized Issues, with new stories in each, while Iron Man, Power Man and Daredevil got only one issue and it was all reprints.- 274 replies

Graham Crackers Chicago Loop store looted, many books taken
shadroch replied to FlyingDonut's topic in Comics General
In terms of dollars and cents, what would that comic shop have laid out over the years having an armed guard overnite on the chance something like this might happen? -

Is there anything in a comic shop worth taking a life or losing a life over? -
My UPS driver in Bisbee starts his day at 7AM, some thirty miles from here. He often is still delivering as late as 9PM and then has to drive the 30 miles back. He says they are very shorthanded plus they are busier than ever. He is young and single and loves the overtime but says many career guys are looking at moving on because of the extended hours. In my case, if he sees my car isn't at the shop, he brings the stuff into my yard and puts it by my backdoor. I'm noticing a lot more Fed Ex Ground deliveries these last few months.

No. A Nathans hot dog is all beef served on a bun with mustard or relish. No extra toppings. They generally are bun sized, although I prefer the slightly longer "bigger than the bun" style myself. I'm not sure how the midwestern style dog became known as Coney Island dogs but I assure you you will never find one of the Coney Island boardwalk, where Nathans made hot dogs famous. -

People seem to confuse Coney hotdogs, which come out of Detroit or someplace with Coney Island style hotdogs ,which are Nathans. They are worlds apart. -
New Marvel Character Labels - Restored books in Universal Holders

They already "fixed it". Arnold Rothstein would be proud. -
ATT would be better off simply licensing all the DC product.

Reveal their " government names" and I'll be impressed.

Now you have a kool story to tell about how Frank Miller screwed up a book you sent in to have signed. That's priceless.

Okay... tell the truth... anybody ever cut out a Marvel value stamp?
shadroch replied to oldrover's topic in Comics General
Cut many an MVS in my my day. When I was selling my first collection in 1977, the first two people who responded to my ad told me i'd ruined the books and offered me pennies on the dollar. I'd spent two days calculating my books were worth $2500 and I felt $2,000 was fair. My first two offers were in the hundred dollar range. Anticipating a quick sale, I had the books on the dining room table and all over the living room. Another dealer came by and offered me $500 and my Mom thought I should take it, but I held out. Finally, a young guy who was a year out of college showed up and wanted most of my books, but only one copy of each. He was more of a reader and wasn't interested in my duplicate copies. We settled for $1300 and I got $150 for the extra copies. -
Bags and boards with too much air in them?
shadroch replied to cgcrock's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Don't squeeze out all the air, it will ruin that new comic smell you'll get in thirty years when you next open it. -
Of which comic have you collected the most copies?
shadroch replied to oldrover's topic in Comics General
Three cases, but that wouldn't make my Top Ten. My partner at the time was an old baseball card dealer who got me into ordering an extra case or two if I thought a book would be hot. We must have had twenty cases of Superman 1. We took a few baths- Johnny Quest, Wonder Woman, Doom Patrol, Tales of GI Joe, A case of 200 .75 cent books was only $75 so you could speculate. I sold the last of my cases before I left NY in 2016, but picked up a few bulk lots since. -
I think it will depend on how it was sent. First class and priority is returned to sender if they can't deliver it. Most other classes go back to the local PO and sit there awhile before they are trashed.
