  1. As a long time Avengers collector, these are the oddball items I love to find. At auction, I might go $25, perhaps $35 on it.
  2. DC experimented with what was called Mando paper in the mid to late 80s. It was whiter than normal paper and it took awhile before the inks were correctly utilized on it. Some books came out looking spectacular while others looked overly garish.
  3. That's like saying the Jets are better than the Bengals. Never cared for either Kirby series. Darkseid, in my eyes, will never recover from being central to Kirbys Super Powers series. Thanos fans can laugh off his one shot in Spidey, but Darkseid spent years as a foil for cartoon characters. It took other writers and artist to make Darkseid into what he now is.
  4. I haven't had a copy in twenty years, but if I did, I'd sell if there was a profit in it.
  5. If I bought that blind, just as a 4.5, I'd be a very unhappy camper. It's much closer to a 3.5, in my opinion.
  6. It wouldn't shock me if the monthly comic on printed paper is history in twenty years. Even if it does exist, who do you think will be looking for a twenty year old comic?
  7. In twenty years, will that still be the case? Will the grading companies survive?
  8. Based on having owned a bunch of books CGC called 4.0s, I'd go with a 5.0.
  9. Marvel had announced plans for a .35 cent line, and an additional , separate line of hundred page books that would sell for sixty cents. There was a national paper shortage at the time and that was the reason given why the two lines were merged and came out as fifty cent 68 page books.
  10. Around 1975, I bought a couple early Marvels at a New York show. Two of them had a stamp with the owners name ,address and phone number. I called and to my surprise got the former owner on the phone. He had gotten several calls over the last few days. He hadn't thought of his comics in years, had lost track of them and had no idea how they ended up in an upstate NY dealers hands. Since the calls had all been recent, the books must have just been offered for sale. I offered him the dealers name but he wasn't interested. I've tried calling a few others with no luck.
  11. One book I consider a hidden gem involves the imp bringing Krypto ,as a gift, to an adult Superman. Imagine being a dog and suddenly having super-hearing you can't control, heat vision, being invulnerable and having superspeed and super-strength. Obviously, it's a recipe for disaster and Supes takes the imp to task. The imp doesn't understand why Big Blue is all upset, and simply blinks Kyrpto back where he came from. Supes suddenly realizes he just condemned his beloved pet to death. The four part story arc leading up to the death of Superboy, necessitated by Crisis, is another gem.
  12. Mister X had great posters, fantastic covers and a great storyline but just never quite did it for me. I named one of my short lived after hours Sonopolis, and really wanted to love the series but it just didn't hit on all cylinders.
  13. I am in for a large mystery box, but due to its weight, I must restrict it to domestic shipping only.
  14. Cool and da gang. A 9.8 must be worth brazzilions. One of one.
  15. Just out of curiosity, can someone post what the book in the photo goes for in a.CGC 9.8 slab? Does it even cover the cost of submission?
  16. A half eaten steak is fodder for a doggie bag. A half eaten burger, not so much.
  17. After moving here, I ran into some unexpected zoning issues that lead to a lengthy delay. Several proposals were rejected and it seemed my dream of living in the approx. 2600 square foot building and having a shop in it wasn't going to happen. Did I have a White Elephant on my hands? Meanwhile, I'm living in a trailer some ten miles away. Short term rentals for someone with a large dog are almost impossible as many former rental properties are now airbnbs. So this week I had yet another meeting with the zoning committee and an alternative was suggested. My building is zoned C1, which allows mixed use with certain requirements. In my case, meeting those requirements would be tens of thousands of dollars. However, as a C1 property, I am not restricted to the two garage sales a year a residential property is. Therefore, it appears I can move into the building and have an endless garage sale on the 23x45ish fenced in side yard. All that I need is for the Fire Marshall to sign off on it. A few details remain to be worked out, but I'm more optimistic than I've been in awhile. I'll be able to slowly fix the defects in the building ,bringing it up to code while both living In it and moving my inventory. Looks like in addition to a huge apartment, I'll end up with two 14x28 warehouses , a 16x14 office and another 16x14 room whose use is to be determined. Weather here should allow outdoor sales year round, except maybe the summer monsoon season.
  18. As this is a CGC sponsored forum, it's important to note that the grading standards referred to are Overstreets and not CGCs. As far as I know, CGC has never released their grading standards. People have sort of deduced them but the official CGC standards are as elusive as the WWE rule book.
  19. Eliminating cash can be a substantial savings to a business, as it eliminates someone making deposits and withdrawals, cuts down on potential internal theft and armed robbery. The reason US currency says what it does about it being legal tender is so your landlord, for example, can't demand his rent in wolf pelts. Just like an auto dealer won't let you pay for a car with pennies, nor a bodega let you buy a.stick of gum with a $100 Bill, no one is obligated to take cash if they don't want to. My old landlord only took checks or credit.cards( with a 3.5% surcharge).
  20. Marvel Germany released a nice set of reprints in the late 90s that look great from a distance. Unfortunately, the cover text is in German.
  21. When Mohammed couldn't go to the mountain, the mountain went to him.
  22. I played with the idea of trying to get a small number of people to pool our money and by a dozen or so blue chips with a set time to sell them, but the logistics and legalities were daunting.
  23. Threads like this remind me why I sell comics thru mycomicshop. Closing in on $30,000 in sales without one single headache. No low balling, no ridiculous returns, no PayPal fees and no shipping.
  24. Shame on you for not updating all your slabs to the newest generation. Personally, I'm surprised CGC allows these obsolete slabs in their registry. CGC worked long and hard to add the Newton Ring protective effect to their newer product. Can you blame a fellow for being upset he got a book without them? At a minimum one should let the potential buyer know your product lacks these Newton Rings. They are every bit as important as the top label that so many carelessly dispose of.
