With prescreens, what was done in the past is you could list different prescreen grades in a 25 or more submission - but at the end of the process it was split into separate submissions for each grade tier.  You could do multiple grade prescreens (9.2 plus 9.4 plus 9.6) but you paid separate shipping on each grade back.

Maybe you can still do this - by selecting "add another service"  near the end as Dena describes in her first posted response?

Thank you Tony, however you did not have to pay for add'l shipping per grade.

I wish I can access my previous submission documents (site is down), but for example, I submitted 25 book pre-screen moderns, and when selecting a minimum pre-screen grade overall (i.e. 9.6), I was then able to move the pre-sceeen level up and down per book (i.e if I thought one of the 25 would not make a 9.6, I can select that PS grade to be a 9.0).   I always received the shipment back, one time, per 25 book order.

@dena- Can you please add back this functionality, or let me know how to enter a 25 book pre-screen book with different pre-screen grades per book??

Unless I missed the memo, which is very possible, I didn't think what you're describing was possible. It is across the street (is that even a saying anymore since they moved?), but I didn't think CGC let you do that.

Oh yes they did 100% ....I have been doing that for at least two plus years before the change.

  3. Hi @dena, I've noticed now that when you are submitted a large +25 book Pre-Screen order, you have to submit the full order for one minimum pre-screen grade (i.e 9.6 min grade for all).

In the past, you were able to submit +25 books for pre-sceeen, but were able to select your minimum pre-screen grade per book (i.e. 10 books @ 9.4 min grade, 15 books @ 9.6 min grade).   Now the whole order needs to be either a 9.4 min grade or a 9.6 min grade for all books, not split.

By removing this functionality, you are really inconveniencing alot of customers who use the Pre-Screen option often!  This change was never communicated at all, and is taking away something that was always available to us over the past few years.

Is there a way that this can be changed in the near future?

Always double or triple board. Even if dropped it will minimize damage considerably.

Without a doubt MUST DO!  And also use Oversized Bags/Board when shipping (i.e for Modern Books - Use Silver Age bags/boards)

On a side note, Ive been receiving a TON of rejects recently, all with similar issues (finger bends, non-color break cover indents) and also been receiving books back with ONLY one backing board.   Clearly, CGC does not care about people's books like they used it.   $$$ is only on their mind

Now I'm wondering if the rejection came before or after the finger bends. Are you thinking of pressing again and resubmitting?.

Yes, of course!  But with how crazy things are @ CGC right now, I might as well hold on to these books for another few months.  There are alot of kinks that CGC needs to work on.    Training new staff on handling books is one.

While it's absolutely possible that its happening at CGC, I do tend to find newer collectors that think they know about grading and are usually disappointed when they send in books that they completely missed a defect on.  Who pressed your books?  Another problem are newer collectors sending their books to either new pressers or those who have been pressing for a while but just aren't that good at it.  I tend to see the probability more likely of those avenues instead of a CGC employee causing those "finger bends" even if it is a possibility.

Although my "Username" is a newbie, I have been a collector for over 30 years.   I understand very well the grading process, and usually on target or off by a grade when reviewing any raw book.   And I've had over 2,000 books graded at CGC (not rejects) in my lifetime.

Trust me, the mishandling was NOT on my part...I am very careful with my books.  I use a presser on here who is well known to everyone on the CGC boards.

I just had another two Pre-Screen Moderns finalized today, and any failures were not due to finger bends.  ???  I chalk to up to either a new grader or mishandling by staff along the way.

My concern is that the volume of books, as well as the need to hire quality staff, simply overwhelmed CGC this year.   I was going to write Harshen about this if this was a common trend.    But as of now, could be one fluke grader's fault.  Ill wait and see for my next few Pre-screens, which are coming due soon.

I havent experienced it, but I can see how that makes sense. Though I cannot believe you when you say you are certain there were no finger bends before since it's impossible to know for sure that it wasnt missed. Did you have your comics pressed by a pro before having them prescreened?

Yes, the comics were pressed by well known pressers.   And I personally inspected the comics (carefully) after they were pressed, and sent them into CGC, so I know the condition of each of them.

Were some of them on the fence for a 9.8 candidate, yes, its true.   But I know for a fact that NONE had finger bends.

CGC is clearly facing pressures, being overloaded with submissions, and not properly training staff on handling books.    Im hoping to get enough people together to send a message to Senior Management to address....

    Good morning,

Thanks for your message. Right now both of these invoices are in with the graders.  We are currently shipping out Pre-Screen Modern orders that were entered into the system around 1-11.  Yours were entered on 1-13 so they should be finishing up very soon.  I am sorry for the longer turnaround times, we are working very hard to bring these times down but every department is seeing some increase in the times.  Thank you for your patience!

Hi @Jennifer_F. - What is the latest status of these orders???

I just called customer service, who stated that these books are STILL in the grading room.

  9. I've been getting some higher level of rejects recently with my Pre-Screen Modern submissions.

But even more curious, is that the majority of the rejects (at least 1/2 of them) have Finger Bends on the cover.   I know for a fact that there were no finger bends before.  Its clear that CGC is not handling the books properly (whether it is when they are received, do the page counts, etc).

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks Jennifer, but I also submitted some Pre-Screen Moderns two weeks after (Received on 1/26/21) and I just received them back graded last week.

Its clearly an issue with these two submissions.  I keep getting the run-around and was told for 3 weeks now it would be finalized and shipping in a few days.    Can you please investigate further?

  11. Hello,

There are two Pre-Screen Modern submissions of mine (3771610 & 3771611) that were delivered to CGC on 12/28/20, marked as Received on 1/13/21, but as of 5/10/21 are STILL marked as Scheduled for Grading.

This is now officially 90 Business Days in CGC's possession!    It should have been completed in early April 2021 per CGC's TATs.

I called about these two invoices multiple times and keep getting different answers.   Can I please get some assistance with finalizing these orders?

    Thanks

I honestly wonder if Pre-Screening does more harm than good with the extra hands on each book.

How would there be more hands in the process?  Is there an extra person verifying the grade compared to regular Modern Grading?

    Hello,

I have heard back from our Director and he advised that Joe at CFP was allowed in the past due to a deal we had with him at the time.  But that has since changed and it is no longer accepted.  Our Director has advised that is no longer listed on the FAQ at CFP.  I'm sorry for any confusion.

    Thanks!

So @joeypost , based on what CGC is now saying, what about Signature Series books currently in your possession?  Or is this for any Sig Series books received after a certain date?

Joe has been around for years and is a trustworthy individual.   And no, not all people can be bought for any price....there are people with morals or strong belief systems that will never change.

I'm a bit surprised though at the sudden change in CGC....Im curious as to why?    Care to fill us in Joe?

  14. I have two Pre-Screen Modern (slow) orders that were marked as RECEIVED on 1/13/2021.

It has been way over the 65 day turnaround time as noted on their website for that tier (mind you, it was again updated and increased TAT yesterday).

Called customer service to see what was going on.   They said that the books are STILL in the Grading Room, and to expect at lease another 10-12 days of processing time before Finalization.   And no, they cannot do nothing to speed the time up.  Apologies galore.

The Customer Service and Quality has went down exponentially since the start of the new year.   Pre-Screen Moderns take now +75 Business Days?

They need to get their together, and stop these BS initiatives like special Signing Events.    GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER FIRST CGC!!!

Can I write-off these increases on my fancy new IRS 1099 next year? :shy:

Just caught this now......People do not understand the recent tax changes regarding online sales.   As people use Paypal, Apple Pay, or eBay Managed Payment to get compensated.

As of January 1st 2022, any electronics payments received totaling $600 or more (regardless if it was one or multiple transaction) will result in a 1099 being issued.  This is because Uncle Sam wants a cut of everyone's side hustle.   I have my own thoughts about why they're doing this, considering how the US Govt prints $$$ trillions a year, and doesn't need this 'Funding', but I will not get into it here.

The rule previously stated that a combination of +200 transactions AND +$20,000 would result in you receiving a 1099.

Between the tax rule changes and these CGC price increases, it will have an impact to this comic market.  I would expect prices to increase (even more than they already have this year) to compensate for all these extra 'costs' in the immediate/near future.

    just got the email

i'm trying to figure out why they think this is a good idea...... they are getting too much stuff sent in, so lets try and cut it down?

There a lot of costs involved with the expansion of their operations, hiring and training competent staff, and the overall increased demand over the past few months.

I was expecting this to be released much earlier in the year.  Quite surprised it took this long.
