  1. Finally picked up another ultra rare Shadow item. The large 1.75”, “Shadow Member Club” Radio Button is sponsored by Celotex Rock Wool in Hutchinson, KS....(circa. approx. 1947) and is in absolutely beautiful condition! There are a total of 4 known examples of this in existence! Hakes description says the button is 1944 but I initially thought that it was produced around late 1945 - early 1947. My assumption is thought to be somewhat correct and verified as much as possible through research done by Martin Grams. The thought is that the button is most likely from late 1946 to early 1947..ish! I actually just picked this up, from a person that specializes selling in old paper, in Kansas. He found it a local listing for $15.00, just last week. I absolutely love this button and it’s similar to the one I used to have, except this newly acquired one is in a little sharper condition, close to perfect! **Martin Grams did checked his research information and wrote: “Celotex Rock Wool was a type of insulation for the”house”. Martin goes on to say that it’s from the late 1946 the early 1947. I have a detailed explanation with details his research I can give to somebody if they are interested.
  2. You are right about premiums, they are ultra scarce and ultra cool!!! In some cases you might have the only known example in existence. With many of them, there are only two or three known examples in existence!!
  3. That is a great premium. I have only seen it come up for sale/auction 2-3 times before, and that is over a 20 year span!! It is very scarce and cool!....👏👏👏
  4. He had this one on a “buy-it-now”, which I bought. Very rare key issue issue and scarce in grade. All Detective July, 1934: (Doctor Death - 1st. appearance & cover!). So much harder to get than any of the Dr. Deaths in his own run, especially in grade!
  5. I actually thought they would go a little higher, other the one Chandler which was about right at $1600.00 However, I thought that some of the non-Chandler issues would go higher than what they did. I’ve chatted the seller at length, Who by the way is a very nice guy. He is basically a picker that went over to a place to buy toy trains and while he was there he spotted a box of magazines that the guy was going to throw out, and it it were the pulps, so he bought them. Nice Find!!
  6. I can’t remember selling a group of books to Alexander, but it might’ve been that I sold it at the Pulp Fest in Pittsburgh and somebody traded with him.
  7. That exact copy came out of the big collection that I bought in June. For the life of me I can’t remember who I sold it to.
  8. The The guy that saw the books that at Anderson’s house knows what he’s doing as far as grading goes, and is probably one if the most knowledgeable, if not the most knowledgable in the business, plus he’s an extremely tight grader and it’s a friend of Jim’s.
  9. Just a quick update for everyone! Pulp Fest which was to take place this August in Pittsburgh, has officially been CANCELED! Dwight
  10. The person that visited Anderson was able have a good look at the Allentown Tec 27, and said if it anything it would be at least 9.6++ range (so 9.6 on the safe side). It was similar to the Cap. Allentown #1 which he had seen multiple times, when Danny Kramer had owned it. Maybe he saw the second time that I haven’t heard of and changed his perception on it, but those were his initial thoughts.
  11. No, even though I like Tec 27 more, in my opinion, the Church Action 1 is the King, and would command top dollar!
  12. Somebody very prominent in grading has seen both books and said he felt the Action Church 1 would be Closer to a 9.4 than a 9.2, so let’s assume 9.4, while the Allentown Tec 27 he said is a lock at at least a 9.6!
  13. Another book that I just picked up. It is my favourite amazing stories bedsheet cover with bone white paper.
  14. My copy of the first Conan. Creamy interior paper and blood red spine.
  15. I haven’t bought too much off of eBay with color touch. That’s always the risk buying off eBay in anything you buy. As much as you can, try to buy from reputable people. If somebody comes out with a small group of books and if a couple books are colour touched, especially from the same title, then beware. Good sellers that are tight graders could miss a dot of colour touch, so just bring it to their attention and most the time the work with you either on a full refund or a price adjustment. That’s totally up to the buyer and what is acceptable to them. Again, sometimes sellers don’t even realize it themselves especially if it was done fairly well. When in doubt ask to see the inside front and back covers for bleed-through. In my experience, most of the time it wasn’t professional colour touch being done, it was with a marker and there will be bleed -through.
  16. I agree the interior art to the Wu Fangs is spectacular.
  17. I think there’s a lot less rules in collecting pulps that there are in are comics. if a pulp is altered or restored, it affects the price as with Comics and many other collectables. This could include ttrimming, colour touch, tape, etc. If anything, I think there is less of an impact on the price of a pulp if any kind of restoration is done, than there is a comic. The difference is that there is an industry standard in comics based on how much resto. is done, and through hundreds of repeated sales . In pulps it could be based on both sales records and the individual collector, and what they will find acceptable. obviously if the restoration is actually identified and disclosed, then the buyer is free to make that choice. However people that have been collecting pulps for a long time take for granted that they understand things like overhang’s, trimming, and how much the price is affected etc., through experience. New collectors the pulp field that are not familiar with the ins and outs of it, I think find it frustrating because there’s not enough sales records at Auctions to really formulate a price point pattern. Therefore Sarg I agree with you completely, if you see a book you personally like, get it!
  18. you are right, if you like the cover, then bid. Who knows with more and more collectors coming into the market, trimming might not drop prices that much at all?
  19. Trimming could knock down the value by as much as 75% on some books, and if it’s Barely detectible on a rare book maybe 10% it just depends on the individual books. As far as collections: The real problem is you can’t be impatient with books coming to market. The comic book market is completely different than the pulp market. there are a lot of guys out there with a lot of money, but what new collectors have to remember is that you can’t get a steady stream of pulps like comic books, no matter how much money you have. Sometimes you have to wait 2 to 3 or more years for the collection to come out and for comic book collectors that is really tough, because they need to fix all the time. it doesn’t matter what comic it is, from Detective 27 to action number one they are always available. I know this, because I came from the comic book field. Bottom line is be patient and books will come out. Sometimes it is frustrating but that is the way it is.
  20. Yes, Sometimes some of the Spicys look like they have about a 16th of an inch trim but it’s hard to tell tell, so that isn’t so bad Pulps like the street and Smith with large overhang‘s, if they’re trimmed, then that is certainly is toxic...kills the value!!
  21. No Not at all, I basically do the same thing, probably stack mine a little too high in the safe until I get another one..LOL! Dwight
  22. I think that I have mine stacked too high in the safe. Probably 10-15 high would be good. Dwight
