True Grit bugs me as I said earlier, I am a big John Wayne fan and I thought many of the characters were playing the earlier versions of themeselves. They use the same speech rhythms and such and I found that lazy, a great example is Strother Martin (failure to communicate actor for those who do onot know the name) has a role and the new version actor tries to sound like him I thought. Same with Hallie Stanfeld, I thought she was too close to the earlier version. And Jeff Bridges too.

Millers Crossing is one I should see again. I also only saw men who watched goats once, will give it another viewing. Burn Before Reading is growing on me, Pitt is trying too hard to be quirky in that one IMO.

AND WHAT, NO BARTON FINK? This was an early favorite but on rewatching the ending drives me crazy...absolutely no resolution to the story and it only leaves open questions. But a wonderfully acted movie, Turturro is amazing (waking up screaming, dacing away like a lunatic, etc.)

I gotta watch Barton Fink again .  As a fellow NJian - you’ll appreciate Burn After Reading’s “ gym scenes “ were  filmed at the former Tower Records in Paramus

wifey and I went to see Barton Fink when we were a'courtin' and have loved their work ever since. I can get excited about most of them, although not so much Ladykillers (its growing on me) and Man who wasn't there (gotta rewatch again perhaps). But the one I love and wifey is bleh on is Intolerable Cruelty...I think it is brilliant. Clooney enjoys playing the fool in the Coen movies and he does it so well, and I think Tom Hanks tried too hard to do something similar in Ladykillers. Clooney clearly doesn't take himself too seriously which is on clear display in his work in O Brother and Intolerable Cruelty.

Coen Brothers are one of my favorites still actively making films , my hit list being :

O brother where art thou, fargo, big Lebowski ,blood simple, raising Arizona , millers crossing, true grit - and my personal fave : no country for old men

Some other movies (not sure have been added or not).

    Army of Darkness

    See the source image

    Batman: Year One
    See the source image

    Blue Thunder

    See the source image

    Good Morning Vietnam

    See the source image

    Heat

    See the source image

    Léon: The Professional

    See the source image

    Ronin

    See the source image

Great stuff here , Ronin is largely forgotten - but a very good lower budget heist . Heat is THE standard for bank robbery movies ( “ the town “ does a great job a decade plus later ) and Leon is amazing !

Army of Darkness is awesome incarnate ...

    really a great list !

This is a GREAT topic! As other have said , WAY too many to just list , but so far the list has a TON of great ones so far. Some more that do deserve a watch ( although sure most have already seen them at least once.) 91KWv2o3aXL._SL1500_.thumb.jpg.b0b41ae8d66c8119f2e79c429d369886.jpgMac_and_me_movie_poster.jpg.c01c9b6aa9f7376ee5fe4c59655e8c77.jpg51WJYh4sNlL._SY445_.jpg.316a7c76e8f195d6fe4ec907697afd47.jpgMV5BODRlMjRkZGEtZWM2Zi00ZjYxLWE0MWUtMmM1YWM2NzZlOTE1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_.thumb.jpg.4cd508d37f223341bf284bc1c023d8ab.jpg1482923214_MV5BNThlMjBmOWItNjljZi00ZGU4LWJkZjgtNWU1ZjI1MTg4MzczXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTIzOTk5ODM@._V1_UY1200_CR8206301200_AL_.jpg.7294faf2e3a8e42aac950c67bb191ec9.jpg

Great list - brining back my 80’s youth ( minus “ Never ending Story “) the “Mac and Me “scene with the wheelchair and subsequent “ Mystery Science Theatre” rendition is priceless

What's the deal with you and rope? :roflmao:

    Part 2 was also good.

And now that you mention it yes most of Charlie Bronson's movies and this one with Tom Hardy. MV5BZGYwYzdkYmYtYTIzOC00OWU3LWFkOTAtYTFjZTY0MDE4M2VkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTAyNjg4NjE0._V1_.jpg.cca4844b6301adbd4f6e99c2fedc26e0.jpg

Tom hardy is the man ! Loved Charlie Bronson in “White Buffalo” and the basis for the Punisher “ Death Wish”..

Boondocks pt 2 always made me nervous it would ruin The greatness of 1 ...so I avoided it

No Seagal? I kid but I enjoyed those movies up until, and including, Under Siege. I think Out for Justice is my favorite due to the villain (William Forsythe), who is excellent in the role.

I saw a comedian once talk about those Seagal movies...the title is exactly what you get in the movie. And very little other than that. He is a joke now but those movies were raw and rough and a lot of fun.

I was always more of a Van Damme guy than Seagal...

My wife and I went to New York City to see the naked lunch in the theater it is quite an odd movie you are correct there

And another visit we saw a documentary called my brothers keeper. That’s an odd one too you will not expect what happens

Yeah Naked Lunch is not for the faint of heart , alot of not so subtle references - it’s almost an autobiographical account of William S Burroughs life , and Peter Weller is the man !

    What was your top 3?

Criterion collection ? Very tough with 1400 movies - too many sub genres to choose from - I would recommend ... a few movies that really make you think ..

    The Seventh Seal

    Onibaba

    Man Bites Dog

    If...

    Naked Lunch

and Aguirre the Wrath of God ... and criminally NOT on Criterion last I checked

these movies are odd , you have been warned - lol
