  1. This is exactly what silver age collectors were telling me just before the values on their books started to tank as well. Just because things happen in a certain order does not mean they wont happen.
  2. It has been so-so for me as a seller so far and I haven't been able to find any decent deals as a buyer. My X-Men 12 CGC 8.5 final sale value was ok but a few hundred below what I was hoping for, especially since the 9.0 copy next to it went for a full $1k more. My UF4 went for a good price. I still have a WoSM 1 and a Usagi left to end with the former looking like a decent sale value and the latter still sitting very low compared to what my other 9.8 copies went for. Bottom line for me is that I did ok in this auction but not enough to make up for the bloodbath I took the books I had in the auction before. I was hoping to roll them into big keys but I kept just missing out. I ended up buying up smaller books at full price while getting half or less of FMV on a lot of what I sent in, so hard to call it a win right now but the big picture and longer term trends may make my rollover in books look better than it does right now.
  3. Yup. My bid was $42 under the winning bid. I am still kicking myself over that one, had a bid that would have won lined up and then I changed it.
  4. I've been pretty frustrated the last couple of CL auction with being edged out on books I really wanted. Last time around I missed an ASM 1 by about 30 bucks, and last night I missed an FF 5 by less than 50. It finally worked out with this beauty though so all good.
  5. It wasnt really a question. Mephistopheles said that Hulk 181 at a 9.8 is pretty rare, which is correct, but my point was that the book is wildly overpriced across other grades. Like UF 4 there are a gazzilion copies, and with 181 you are paying 4k or more for anything mid grade and up. That is completely ridiculous considering how many mid grade copies of that book are out there. Oh, and while I am at it, even though it is pretty rare 100k for a 9.8 copy of 181 is still in the zone where they should be giving buyers some strong meds to help them in life.
  6. Interesting question. I look at it from the perspective of how many copies are out there versus how much they are going for. So Spawn is in there for sure, although the prices are not ridiculously high so whatever. Probably ASM 300. I used to get 9.4 copies pretty cheap all of the time on that book, and now somehow it is priced out of the reach of a lot of people even with gads more of them sent in for grading every year. Totally overrated. This one will get me into trouble - Hulk 181. If you want to talk about a fanboy effect there are soooooooo many Wolverine fanboys out there. Hugh Jackman will be showing up with a walker and they will still think it is the coolest thing since sliced bread. This book is a 1k book tops disguised as a 5-10k and up book. UF4 is pretty far down the list for me and I am keeping one 9.8 copy around. When the current Spider-Man ages out I am expecting a new string of live movies with Miles as the main character. He will have broad appeal to the audience who goes to movies and is a character they can build a franchise around. With apologies to the OP, there is zero reason why people who grew up with Spider-verse stuff have to prefer the version from 1960s comics. My last pick will be Clone Wars 1. Although Ahsoka is definitely a cool character, there is nothing about how values of books in the Star Wars universe have played out that says a Dark Horse comic will hold at the multi-thousand dollar mark. Those were dollar bin books for a long time, and although this one will never be a dollar bin book again I cant see the value staying anywhere near where it has been the past couple of years. Ok done, flame away
  7. It just looks to me like someone bought their own book from MCS and took the hit on commission to try to juice up the price enough to make some extra cash. Pretty basic math. Using made up numbers, say there is a 10% commission on $114k which works out to $11,400. If the value of the book was 80k and it goes for $110k at the next auction because of an "OMG the book is spiking in GPA" kind of thing the person makes an extra $30k minus the $11,400, so $18,600. Note the process only works if the first sale is recorded in GPA (MCS sales are, CL sales are not) so the auction houses cannot be reversed. Anyway, if the person did buy their own book back to try to spike the prices they gambled and lost. The thing about shipping times in nonsense. MCS ships fast, and I have had books that arrived at CL the same day as the start of the auction show up in that auction. All they have to do is scan the book and slot it in. All that stuff about auction previews is garbage - books that are there are previewed, books that arrive under the wire are not.
  8. I sold most of my SA in the first third of the comic boom when the prices were rising but not as high as they would eventually get. These sales all looked terrible in 2021 but now I am pretty happy. Better to leave a bit on the table then to try to squeeze out every dime and eventually get burned.
  9. This thread has been very helpful. I sent in an ME submission a few weeks ago that did not show up in the system until last night. During that time I knew what was up from reading through replies to the OP, so I did not waste my time and theirs by calling support to try to figure out what was going on and instead I just patiently waited for it to appear in the system.
  10. If I read this correctly, people in Canada can now submit books through Grosnor but they are still sent to CGC facilities in the USA for grading. I am not 100% sure of the upside to this so I started a thread hoping someone can clarify for me. I would love to bring some of the cross-border shipping costs down for my submissions. 11. I had a pretty good round and ended up at 5, but my first round sucked so I am out of the running anyway. Still fun to play though
  12. The Silver Surfer 3 (8.5) was mine. Not shown here was my Silver Surfer 2 (8.5) and my X-Men 10 (8.0). All seriously underperformed, and my moderns are doing even worse aside from one book that is weirdly overperforming (the Justice League Dark 9.8). But overall I sent in over 3 dozen books and it is a total bloodbath for me. Major regrets sending most of them.
  13. I bought a collection two years ago that had about 4000 comics. The person I bought it from paid someone to do an inventory of the books and type out a list, but it did not include grading. He said he paid the person $200 to do it. As an aside, that list ended up being completely worthless when he sold me the collection because I went through the books myself in person when I got there and made my offer based on what I saw. I took a printed copy of the list after buying because he was insistent and quite proud of it, but it went straight into the dumpster as soon as I got home.
  14. Sure, the price may be high but he is including free shipping to offset that.
  15. The market is down right now but nicer keys are still holding at pretty high values. IMO, the original poster can sell now and it would be a good bet to get good value from those books in the sale. IMO again, some big books will keep on climbing and are generally recession-proof. I do not put TTA keys in that category, and I do not believe they will go up in value quickly outside of another movie announcement. So the TL;DR is that if you need to cash out for some reason I would do it, but if you are ok with a long hold with a slow increase in rate of return you can safely hold and maybe get a little more later if that is your goal.
  16. Picked up another nice collection and this is a small sampling. I will be sending in the Wolverine and some of the X-Men that I figure have 9.8 potential. About 150-200 books are worth pressing and will go into my pressing queue.
  17. Back cover looks normal but there is almost no color there. Just an ad for Lego.
  18. Hi Everyone, This one has me stumped so I figured I would try to draw on expertise on this board. I bought a cool collection today that had this X-Men 118 Whitman variant. However, the reds and yellows are almost completely absent from the cover. At first I thought it may be sun fade but it really looks as though those colors were never there to begin with. My next thought is maybe the printer was running out of some inks when this one rolled out, but I dunno. Has anyone seen a book like this? Is it just sun fade or does it look like something else?
  19. And shipped. Jumped to QC and then shipped within a couple of hours, which was outstanding.
  20. Woah, went right to QC/Finalized within an hour. That was awesome!
  21. A group of 4 ME books SFG - Sept 21 G/E/I - Oct 13
  22. Congrats on selling off your books! It is really tough to sell a lot of comics and collectables a couple at a time, and if you get a fair price in one shot it is definitely a great way to go.
  23. I do strictly cash, but I will note that vendors who accept plastic sell a lot more comics.
