Yes, isn't this transaction really the poster child for the classic example of a CGC label chaser buying the label, as oposed to buying the book.
Especially since some of the comments here would seem to acknowledge the general sentiment that the underlying book itself is so common that it has no actual worthwhile value in most grades across the entire condition spectrum.
I wouldn't go that far. Transformers #1 is a solid key. To say it's essentially worthless in most grades is really not doing the book justice. Also, I have never really understood the comment about "buying a grade/label instead of buying the book". Anyone that buys a slab is chasing a book in a grade they want (or can afford). Does "buying the book" mean people should just buy raws? Never understood that whole discussion. Anyway, for someone to own a Transformers #1 in a 9.9 is a great accomplishment, IMO.

Any plans to consider a tiered commission structure in the future? I believe you're currently at 8% for auctions and 10% for fixed price (8% after $300), with everything capped at $1000 as well. Would be very exciting to see something that entices sellers to offer some bigger books. I'm currently using Myslabs due to the 1% seller fee, and 0% for bigger books. It's a slower process since they are relatively new and don't yet have a large following, but they are growing and the money I'm saving is hard to pass up.
Have never sold through MCS, but would absolutely give it a try if the fee structure were a little different. Sounds like a great place to sell!

This dynamic has already played out in sports cards, to disastrous effect on prices. PSA is grading a million slabs a month, most of them ultramodern, and prices have declined 70-90% on a lot of key cards due to general economic headwinds and the increasing supply glut. Real bloodbaths on some stuff.
Is it also the same situation where even after the steep declines you referenced, the values are still significantly higher than pre-covid prices?

I also heard it was imminent.

There are some people that buy books like these as "add ons" to whatever auctions they have already won. Then they crack a book like this out and sell it raw two to three grades higher than the assigned grade. I have seen that happen a few times over the years.
When I was selling, (I took the year off), I would always search for any book that was undervalued or I felt I could flip to offset the cost of shipping. I would sell it in the slab in the grade assigned. However, I got the idea from someone that would do what I previously mentioned. If they bought that 3.0 and felt it was a 5.5, then they would crack it and sell it raw.
I believe it. Lots of disingenuous people in the hobby. I like your strategy of looking for ways to offset shipping costs.

I think... I think...
That was the comiclink copy. It was graded a 9.9 or 10.0 though right?
Oh...well...that's a little different. Hard to put a pricetag on a unicorn. I'm more shocked at the $18 sale.

I can't help but wonder what was going through the head of the buyer who bidded and paid $44K for a copy of this relatively "common as dirt" CA book here, and this is the exact reason why we have this sentiment on this particular book here:
Someone paid 44K for a copy of Transformers #1? When was this?

Why not sell something at a low price and then buy into another better performer at that low price?
I agree, this has merit. Good reminder for those looking to keep buying.

Not to mention the burn out figure. After a few months, I might not ever want to look at a comic again.
So true. While it would be amazing to hold onto some serious grails that some most people never have a chance to own, the honeymoon would probably wear off quickly.

This is nothing new. Been going on since books started getting slabbed, and will continue on.
Also, I think some of these sales are from sellers that bought large collections, got their money's worth from the bigger books, and not too worried about what they get from the rest.

I don't see "9.9" listed anywhere, now. Did someone message the seller, or maybe s/he caught wind of this thread?
All those listings were from the same seller. Looks like they have updated to 9.8. Probably just a typo.
Are there other examples out there from other sellers? I don't see some kind of systemic problem that may have been insinuated in this thread.

I went looking on E-Bay for a few books and stumbled across a listing that noted the book was a 9.9 with no other description indicating otherwise. Some E-Bayers like to say things like 9.8 but looks 9.9 mint! to catch buyers attention. I get why someone would do that and at least they clearly list it as CGC 9.8. I see this book as I said, listed strictly as a 9.9 in the title and figured, ok, maybe it was just an error and moved on. I find yet another book, then another and another with the same exact scenario. Book pictured is clearly 9.8 but strictly listed as 9.9 and not just in title but also in the description as well. Is this a common thing that people see when on E-Bay? We've all seen some strange things on there but this is a first for me.
Do you have a link? Curious to see what those listings look like.

Agreed. Extremely inaccurate. The only time it works is by exception. Definitely not the norm. In most cases, as you get to higher grades, the average price is anything but linear. It's more exponential.

Can someone help me understand where the idea that DD #1 is falling in value is coming from?
Here are some data points for 9.4:
- 9.4 OW/W sold for $67,850 4/15/21 https://www.comicconnect.com/item/901164
- 9.4 OW sold for $75,382.50 8/31/21 https://www.comicconnect.com/item/927044
- 9.4 OW/W sold for $60,000 11/19/21 Heritage
- 9.4 OW sold for $72,000 4/8/22 Heritage
- 9.4 OW/W sold for $78,000 6/17/22 Heritage
Maybe the 9.4 is an exception but I just looked at GPA and most grades seem to be falling. Are you seeing the same thing?

When we saw prices rise just as quickly, are you really surprised they would drop just as fast?
For most books, the drop in prices is not nearly as fast as how quickly they rose. Also, almost all big keys are still significantly higher than pre pandemic prices. The only surprise for me is that books have not dropped more than they already have.

Not clear on the "Craigslist model" you are referencing. Myslabs is really simple. When your book sells, they take 1% of the sale price (or 0% for books over 60k). They are still fairly new with comics but they've been an established platform for trading cards for awhile. Moved into comics a year or so ago.
