I've always believed there's a certain degree of leniency involved with an older book. So if  a Bronze Age comic came along which had the same amount of minor issues as the Avengers 1 pictured , it may be graded .2 or maybe even .4 lower? Again, just something I believe. I personally would trust the grade given.

Without a doubt. I don't think you could get higher than an 8.5/9 if that spine was on a modern. But, I don't have a problem with these older books being graded on a curve. That's just me though.

some of these comics are worth some money, most are not.  You'd probably have to look up each comic individually, and take grade/condition into account.  You can check out Ebay 'completed sales' to get an idea/range of the value of your comics.  Please remember there are ebay fees, paypal fees, and shipping to consider as well.

The Spiderman #1 silver you can probably sell for $2-$5 and maybe up to $10 if its in very high grade and you get a little bit lucky.

Yep Ebay and I also use MyComicShop. http://comics.gocollect.com is also really good.

  3. If I'm starting a new box, I usually place a small stack sideways so that the ones facing normal don't slide down which happens a lot. I place one of those plastic Title dividers in between so that the boards aren't cutting into that front cover of the regular stack. Also leave a little room to flip through the books. You don't want 300 books jammed into one box.

Awesome, thanks for your thoughts!  Yes, if someone gave me $65 I'd take it (it's for sale currently) but considering taking it down and actually framing it cuz I love the cover as well. I thought hanging it as a slab, but you're right, with the few I have slabbed I almost wish I hadn't spent the money as none of them came back in the 9's, and that seems to be where today's slab collector's spend their money (unless it's something insanely rare).. I wrote this on another thread as well, but grading has developed into something very different from when I collected. Every comic in my collection I purchased in the 70s and 80s. And this particular issue of Ghost Rider would have been considered a "great" copy by the standards of my friends and fellow collectors at the time. The words "color breaking crease" didn't exist for us, we might have said "Yeah, there's a tiny fold" and the other guy would've replied, "That's not much of a fold. Hell they come off the shelf like that sometimes!" And we would have agreed we got a great copy. Bad copies had tears, missing pages, split spines, and Kool-aid spilled on the cover :)   Just my experience and opinion, not against the current ways, but realized what I thought were great books aren't in the condition people look to spend money on today.. And I do appreciate your thoughts!

I know what you mean about how grading has changed. I remember going to a comic show in my local mall when I was little and seeing books marked as "pretty nice copy" lol. It wasn't until quite a few years later that I learned that "pretty nice" wasn't an official grade

  5. With that minor color breaking crease I don't think you can get higher than a 7.5. Pressing should fix the back cover but I don't think that grade could go higher. Even at an 8.0 the value doesn't look to change on that book. It looks really nice. I wouldn't put $ into this book. I would keep it & enjoy it or sell it as is. I always liked that cover!:)

From your comment about the slab laying flat, I wonder if you are onto something. Maybe they leave CGC okay but in the process of shipping, they develop the Newton rings. Maybe from pressure or laying flat ?

I'm wondering now if I lay them face down if the rings will go away eventually, if that is what actually caused it. I just pulled a few out of a CGC box and didn't notice any rings on those.

Seems like it is different time every year........and not by a couple of weeks. I'll be there because I'm a local, not sure why as I only ever buy from the same 2/3 dealers that I could just go to their sho :frown:p. Guess I have that 50.00 admission fee burning a hole in my pocket :makepoint:

Lol same here. The amount of comics at this Wizard show just keeps dwindling every year it seems. I also keep buying from the same guys each year also. The lack of guests/artists and lack of CGC makes me think this show is about to go bye-bye :hi:

I'm sure he's joking. There used to be a trick you could use on the older generation slabs that opened up slightly on the sides. You could open a side up and slide a piece of paper in there and it would remove the Newton Rings. Worked every time. The trouble is the new case design is too snug. (shrug)

Yeah I tried the paper trick but all of my slabs are the newer type. I wouldn't want a hole drilled in my case either because now you have a damaged case to deal with lol. I noticed it happening on a slab that was laying flat for awhile. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not or if it's just the way it was slabbed.

  9. I picked up all of the variants including the 1:1000 except for the Moebius virgin. They were all badly damaged so I'll have to wait for the replacement. I went through a lot of them to find ones that didn't have the bind tear that most of these have. I think the Del Otto is my favorite though. This concluded my ASM variant spree. The new run will start with a 1:2000 doh! Time to jump off that ship.

I picked up my copy of ASM #800 and i realized once i put in in a bag and board there was a small curve in the book leaving a hollow space. I'm sure it's just because it is a monster of a book, but wasn;t sure if anyone else's is like this.

I have several different copies, but no dents. The one thing most of these had though was the usual bindery issues of the giant size modern books. Won't effect the grade though. Where is the dent?
