  1. Wow! Allred was a perfect choice, although the last panel seems to be heading in a different direction than Hanks would have taken. (If you consider anything by Hanks to be heading in a recognizable direction.) Great timing too, since my copy of I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets arrived yesterday and I read the story with the criminals and skeletons hanging in the air. Jack
  2. I'm not familiar with the artists but that page has an Alex Toth look to it. Is that their normal style? That's also what I liked about the page but I've never run into these guys before ... so much so that I don't know which is the artist, which is the writer What's up with the paper? Does it change from story to story, or are the newsprint texture and color printed on this page? New books for the want list! Jack
  3. Hard to believe such a nice boy ended up on smack. Jack
  4. I'm like you. All I can think of is Jack Benny!! which obviously isn't going to be the answer. "J-E-L-L-O, the JELLO Program starring Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone" or for a USA baby boomer who watched too much TV as a kid, Alvin and the Chipmunks -- they used to shill (the real meaning) for Jell-O. The next generation probably thinks of Bill Cosby. Jack It cracks me up that at the same time I'm younger and yet older than you Time travel stories always give me a headache, Dad. I mean, Son. Jack

  6. Secret Agent X-9 = Alex Raymond I'll admit it, that's a pretty lame clue. Thanks for doing all the leg work on that question. Not a bad clue, but I mistook it as Secret Agent X-9 -> Secret Agent Corrigan -> Jim Corrigan -> Spectre, even though Spectre wasn't in the story! This page convinced me to dig out the issue. Challengers of the Unknown, Lois Lane, Congo Bill, Robotman, Vigilante. Hilarious! What a dream team! Too bad they didn't end up with their own series like Justice League. Jack Jell-O? I'm lost.
  7. I wish, then I could inherit them But then, he'd TRY to bump me off...*sniff* Looks like you've been reading the Belle Guiness thread. Jack
  8. Congrats, Jack. (Jerry Siegel is the creator of the Spectre.) D'oh -- "created this feature", not wrote the story. Very strange. Do you know whether Disney had a thing or two to say about the story? Jack
  9. Good lord. I'm going to have to dig this issue out to read it. Everybody but the kitchen sink according to GCD! Your clues point to Spectre/ Jim Corrigan but he's not listed and Rex the Wonder Dog. Interesting question. Jack Character appearances: Green Arrow [Earth-1]; Green Lantern [Hal Jordan]; Superman [Earth-1]; Martian Manhunter [J'onn J'onzz] (flashback); The Flash [barry Allen] (flashback); Batman [Earth-1] (flashback); Robin [Earth-1] (flashback); Aquaman (flashback); Wonder Woman [Earth-1] (flashback) (all as the Justice League of America/JLA, pre-origin); Ace Morgan; Prof. Haley; Red Ryan; Rocky Davis (all as the Challengers of the Unknown, all flashback); Blackhawk; Andre; Stanislaus; Hendrickson; Chop-Chop; Olaf; Chuck (all as the Blackhawks, all flashback); Dr. Erdel (flashback); Commander Blanx (villain, flashback); Roy Raymond (flashback); Lois Lane (flashback); Jimmy Olsen (flashback); Rex the Wonder Dog (flashback); Congo Bill (flashback); Congorilla (flashback); Robotman [Dr. Robert Crane] (flashback); The Vigilante [Greg Sanders] (flashback); Plastic Man (flashback); Rip Hunter (flashback); Adam Strange (flashback); Alanna (flashback)
  10. You're getting closer. I'd take a guess with this story except for the writer ID. Fox (-script), Bernard Baily (signed) (Pencils), Bernard Baily (signed) (Inks), ? (Colors), ? (Letters). Synopsis: Percival has to guard the payroll at a cartoon studio. Character appearances: The Spectre [Jim Corrigan]; Percival Popp; Paul Binny; Rollin' Rodent; Willie the Wolf; Dinky the Elephant. Genre: superhero; occult Indexer notes: Writer id by Martin O'Hearn.
  11. I had to use the web, which turned up JLoA 144 as the source with these two added: Martian Manhunter Green Lantern primarily as Hal Jordan (It sounds like you want characters from Quality though. Am I misreading your clue?) Jack
  12. You should see the interior on that one! It's amazing what you can do with a rope, a stake and a bamboo shoot. Oh, and a girl. maybe I will get to sneak a peak at one now, did you mean you want to sneak a "peek" or, since we're talking about a girl, is it a peak peek you seek, geek? good point...I prefer to peek a peek at the peaks, though, as a geek, I do seek a peek any time of the week Who let Crumb's Ruff Tuff Creampuff in here? Jack takin' no guff
  13. Ah, big deal. I just won one of those minutes ago. For three figures!!! , how many of your figures were before the decimal point? Great catch, Bill! Jack
  14. Amazing as usual, BZ. No way I could have gotten this w/o a lot of research that I didn't have time for (busy weekend). Wouldn't this make a great topical collection? Maybe even market it to schools via Scholastic Books. They already dipped their foot in the pond with Bone, right? Is the geography too out of date? Would kids read "old-school" Uncle Scrooge? Jack
  15. These are fantastic! Is that really a giant super-turtle in there? How did all those guys manage to keep their hats on? Usually they go flying when the monster shows up! Jack
  16. Not really my pulp -- cover arrived as "pulp of the day" on a list I joined -- but it struck me as funny to find "collector" and "slab" on a 1950 cover. The hot babe in red was less surprising. Jack
  17. Off-list, we were imagining dear ol' Milford High with R. Crumb lusting after the Jackson Twins (although their bottoms are too small to attract his attention) while being abused by Coach Gil Thorp in gym class. GAC found this Jackson Twins panel from their toonopedia page. Although initially I thought that I had never heard of the strip and was racking my brain to remember where I had seen the girls before -- they look like Linda Lee Danvers (Supergirl) after her makeover or a 60s Marvel teen-book character by Stan Goldberg or even a perky Betty Brant -- I slowly realized that I read this strip in the local paper as a kid. The mention that they called their brother "termite" convinced me. Does anyone else remember the strip? You certainly don't owe me an apology for providing a question on a day when I didn't have time to write one. I hope you stick around for the quizzes. Jack
  18. Moon Mullins? Great guess! It's got to be right w/ those clues. Jack keep a'shinin' in june
  19. Especially Punjab. He was one big dude. Jack
  20. BZ is the KING of quizzes. No, I didn't get the reply. That gives me a date range on the right anwer. Tough question! Jack lives on Yump Street, lingers long on Yump Street...
  21. Huh? You mean he got PMed the right answer from Robinson's book to you? Or the variant answer I came up with? #5 is a killer! My guesses PMed to you were wrong? (not that I can win on "my" question.) Jack Oh, what a tangled web.
  22. Re #1 There are also two additional answers for #1 that I would find acceptable -- one "attends" as an employee of Milford High, and the other is a well-known, real-life cartoonist that graduated from a real Milford High. We were considering the strange consequences if all of them were at the same Milford High at the same time. Jack You can also add cartoonist Robert Crumb to that list. He attended Milford High School in Milford, DE for a year or two before moving to Dover where he attended Dover High School. You can also add me to the dummies list. R Crumb is the real-life cartoonist that I meant. I thought he graduated from Milford High. Whoever figures out the other characters from a strip that ran from 1950-1979 (I am now convinced that this strip ran in my local paper when I was a child) can amuse themself by picturing Crumb in the same class. Jack (used to walk to Milford, CT)
  23. I'm formally the questioner here so am backing off. Re #1, GACollectibles may want to provide the clue that he sent me via PM. There are also two additional answers for #1 that I would find acceptable -- one "attends" as an employee of Milford High, and the other is a well-known, real-life cartoonist that graduated from a real Milford High. We were considering the strange consequences if all of them were at the same Milford High at the same time. If no one wins by tomorrow morning, how about 5 out of 6 correct? (I do have a nutty guess on #5.) Jack Bummer. The answer is on page 54. Anyone got 'em yet?
  24. Wow! Great copy of a seldom seen (by me anyway) issue. Somebody might want to advise Mr -An to wait 'til morning to break the news to Kara. Jack
