  1. Aquaman 2 and 4 moved to Big Box 12¢ thread. Jack
  2. Part of a big purchase that arrived this week. Action Comics 267 with an absurdly DC PINK cover! The real treat here is the Supergirl backup: third Legion appearance, first Kara as Superwoman! Jack
  3. Here's my favorite recent Legion of Super-Heroes purchase. Action Comics 267 with an absurdly DC PINK cover! The real treat here is the Supergirl backup: third Legion appearance, first Kara as Superwoman! Fortunately I didn't have to crack a slab open to take a look at the story. Respectable (for me) VG+ condition. I'd even say it's nicer than a reader copy. Jack
  4. An intense advertising competition between "Kookie Koola" and a competing beverage broke out in the pages of a long-running comic book. What was the name of the other beverage? Jack
  5. Henry is a better strip than you give it credit for. I've seen far worse many other places. In the grand scheme of things, I think we should give him a seat in the front of the bus. You should also check out the article on Henry in a recent Hogan's Alley. I learned quite a bit about the character's creation IIRC. Okay, okay, stop the deluge already ... I'll scan it tonight if I haven't already done so and posted it somewhere around here ... Actually, I agree. Classic pantomime (but not in the comic books) strip. Where on earth did you come up with a SCARCE variant copy like that? It must be worth a fortune. Jack Next you'll try to tell me that you've seen that Ellison joke before!
  6. Humbug -- scarce early Kurtzman, Wood, Heath, Davis -- short bus??? Send me all your short bus junk like that one! Henry on the other hand? I'm afraid he has a reserved seat, even though Anderson is a very clean cartoonist. But wait -- is that a magic mirror is this is a Dadaist cover? Jack (Is it true that Henry auditioned for the lead in a theatrical version of Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream"?)
  7. Yikes! Great stuff. Good move to anticipate my deluge. I especially like the "Cyclops prototype" feature with light shining from the mutant reindeers' eyes. Does that make this a "headlights cover"? Looks like a possible Mary Jane crossover too -- and it's the Blimp, Frank, the Blimp! Jack (take me to Zooville)
  8. Interesting find! That's actually a caricature of Wally (Underdog) Cox as "Mr. Peepers," an old TV series. From Terrific Comics 16? I didn't know that series had comedy features. Any idea who drew it? Jack
  9. Overstreet agrees with Little Beaver and Little Scouts starting FC, then numbered issues, then FC. Brownies looks like FC issues only. Bozo is interesting -- I never noticed that it was FC, numbered, FC, then numbered again starting with a new #1. Jace Pearson was weirder -- FC, numbered 2-9, #10 issued as FC 648, then numbered 11-16, then two more FC. King of the Royal Mounted might be the oddest -- D. McKay Feature and Large Feature, then Dell FC, then numbered, then FC. Zane Grey's Stories of the West is also strange with FC, numbered, FC, then topped it all off with a Gold Key issue. Question later. Nothing on deck and I have a few other jobs to finish first. Jack
  10. Four Color question was better but I ran out of time to work on it. Do you have the answer or going to save it for later? Jack
  11. Rocky Lane, Black Jack Dale Evans, Buttermilk Roy Rogers, Trigger Lone Ranger, Silver Red Ryder, Thunder Hopalong Cassidy, Midnite Monte Hale, Pardner (or Partner) Jack
  12. Squeeks! Jack PS: Once again -- refresh screen first!
  13. IRRC, I only posted the splash and another story page. Don't hurt your purchase when it comes though, here's the 8-page story (thumbs u Wow. Giant bats, lingerie panels, an action shot of an "athletic build", and even Ratzis pulling a boner -- all in one story! John Cassone? Not a familar name. He created The Web (I thought that was Al Gore ) and drew some later Blackhawk, from a quick google search. Jack
  14. She gave up her typing job to become a fashion artist for a local department store. I have this strange feeling that Albert Dorne is still sketching away in your basement. Jack
  15. It was driving me buggy because I knew I had seen it before, including the palm tree -- even looked over Katy Keene's regular title last night. I needed the 25¢ hint. Wanda Pickulski went through a celebrated career change over 45 years ago. What were her jobs before and after? Jack
  16. Here's a little more of the image revealed. Another clue. Katy Keene Pin-Up Parade 1 Jack
  17. *sniff* They grow up so FAST! Sunrise, sunset... Jack (Don't warn Mr B before you smack him -- he might dodge)
  18. I thought I wouldn't have to check back for a few hours.. I gotta start asking these other comic mavens for tough ones. I'm running out. So ask an easy one! Jim's up for the next question. It was his first answer (I think) so maybe he doesn't know the rules. I just sent him a PM reminder. Jack
  19. Quinlan does look like a possible Crumb influence. I don't think that Crumb ever lived in Detroit. *google* Crumb grew up around military bases in Philadelphia and Oceanside, California, and later in Milford, Delaware. In the early 1960s Crumb moved to Cleveland, Ohio... [Once while driving around Cleveland, some friends and I sought out American Greetings, where he worked. I may still have one of his greeting cards kicking around somewhere.] Then San Francisco, rural California, and Sauve, France. Anyone know why he published two issues of Motor City Comics? I think I have #1 but not nearby. Jack
  20. Not hard to see the resemblance between the Miss Victory splash and Motor City Comics 1! Jack
  21. Outstanding! Certainly no need to apologize for any duplicates. It looks like many of the books are from the same news stand with the KC/date notation. Did you buy those directly off a local stand, or from someone who did? There are so many styles here, I had to look up the artists at GCD to satisfy my curiosity and because I'm trying to learn to spot them. I hope you don't mind my hijacking your scans for the "lesson". What a parade of talent, with surprisingly few repeats. Thanks for posting a whole run. Jack Ruben Moreira -- lady under glass cover! Nick Cardy. This one confuses me every time I see it. Without the logo, I'd swear it was one of Schaffenberger's ACG covers. Does anyone else see a strong resemblance to Schaffenberger? Leonard Starr Leonard Starr again. This one looks unusual to me, almost minimalist like later Toth. Mort Meskin. He was terrific! Leonard Starr with tour de force coloring. Bill Ely. I wonder why the photorealism on Calvin. Was he supposed to resemble a current celebrity? Jack Kirby Sheldon Moldoff Ruben Moreira (and certainly Jack Adler, right?)
  22. Wow! A generous-hipped woman in patriotic, high-waisted leotard, punching out a jack-booted gorilla with Nazi armband and cap. It doesn't get more Golden Age than that!!!! Have any of Miss Victory's Holyoke stories been reprinted? Maybe by AC Comics? Is this drawn by Charles Quinlan? (Only artist I could find associated with her at GCD.) Thanks, Jack
  23. Great stuff, BB-G! What's up with Miss America's glasses? Did she usually wear them both in and out of costume? Was she wearing contacts in the Fox and Vixen splash panel? Is her disguise even more pathetic than Clark Kent's? That's a wonderful cover -- one of Schomburg's best. I wonder why it didn't get nominated in the "top GA covers" contest a couple of years ago. Jack
