  1. This one? One of my fav's as well! Nice copy Sky Seriously and no offense intended, but I'm surprised that anyone would pick an action-free Novick WW cover as a favorite, with so many quirky Peter and Andru covers to choose from (although Novick covers certainly trump all the future Buckler/Colletta, Chan (Chua) and Estrada monstrosities.) Why is this a favorite? Harbinger of the late Golden Age/ Atomic Age mixed genre books? The tension of the guy behind the door? Imagining WW as a hard-boiled gumshoe? Jack
  2. Because otherwise the stories would be VERY short. Jack
  3. WOO WOO! and cross-dressing panels to boot. Great catch. They're pure H G Peter, right? Do they say Wonder Woman 18 and Sensation 76, 83? Jack
  4. $8.50 The issues without Superman and Batman are my second favorites after the early JLA/JSA crossovers. (Is 24 the last one where Supes and Bats weren't featured?) Jack
  5. I wonder whether she saw the film. I don't remember ever seeing it. It's an interesting promo book. I should have another copy of it kicking around, but I'd have to dig for it. I can't figure out why he's the Mighty Atom instead of the Mighty Electron. Funny that there's a Magazine Enterprises character named Mighty Atom. Originally co-starred with the Pixies, and a later version (DeCarlo art??) sported the same pompadour as Big Boy and Vitaman. Jack
  6. He looks kind of like the love child of Fletcher Hanks' Stardust and (Frisch's) Big Boy, doesn't he? I mean Vitaman, not shiverbones. Jack
  7. Another Fiction House jungle girlie -- Sheena 8, rougher overall but less faded. Jack
  8. I never know where to put promotional books. This one doesn't really fit on the Golden Age promo thread. The Mighty Atom, starring Reddy Kilowatt, apparently from a 1965 film (but the code of R.K.G.A #1-597 makes me think that Dell may have produced it in July 1959 and this is a reprint). Not a bad-looking copy, although the scan accentuates the stains. Pretty good artwork, probably by more than one artist. How could I resist a book starring an atom? Jack
  9. Very nice! I just got one of those too (raw and lower grade). One of my favorite Lois covers. Jack
  10. Love that Jumbo! Nice books Jack! (thumbs u Thanks. I've got to wonder where Fiction House bought their cover inks. Such weird color fading on a lot of the copies I've seen. Jack
  11. It's not going to win any prizes, but I can't complain about a nice, clean copy (about vg+) of Justice League of America 15 for about $8.50. Jack
  12. OK, so I can't compete with Sensation 1 and other treasures. The other books from my recent shipment barely drew yawns, but maybe somebody will like the two Jungle girlie covers. Even a blue gorilla. Jack
  13. Great stuff! I still don't have #8. Looks like an interesting issue. Where were you when Crumb got "voted off" the SA Survivor Series? Jack
  14. If memory serves, I think the guy I bought them off of came from the Rochester,NY area. This is back in the early 90's. He sold me his near complete Romita run because he was saving up to buy a steadicam. He was getting out of comics and getting into film. So, I assume Rochester is where they came from. If not, he got them in Chicago. Neisner's. Never heard of the place. What was it, a drug store? Pete An old "dime store". The one I remember was in northern OH. I don't know how widespread the chain was -- maybe northeast and midwest? I was surprised to see the name -- haven't thought of it for years. Jack (old fudd mumbling into his gruel)
  15. Thanks Blind Owl! Here's an example of the writing showing up on the cover. It looks like ball point pen. In some issues it's on the "sweet spot" of the splash. (The place at the bottom of the page where artists sometimes sign.) They're nice books, so I'd be happy with just a point off the grade. Neisner's! There's a blast from the past. Do you know where the book came from? Jack
  16. I thought these were interesting!!! I hope they haven't been posted before!!! Great stuff! Thanks for posting. I'm sure I've never seen the feature before. Did you ever notice how much faster you can fill up a page with text than with pictures? Even if they don't have backgrounds. Specially prepared litmus paper -- HHAAWW!! Quintessential Golden Age. Jack
  17. Fortunately it's pretty easy to replenish them. Jack
  18. Thanks for looking. I was out of town all day and am catching up a bit. This is the only book in the run I have -- in fact, I've never seen the 15¢ issues. My expectations for Charlton books are very low, so this was a pleasant surprise. Jack Hi Jack, here's Out of This World #8; a GIANT 15 cent issue from 1958. Not an easy issue to find!!!!! Good one! Very minimalist cover -- it's not Ditko, is it? (Hard to tell.) Is it signed at the bottom of the right hand? Jack
  19. Great book and I know it's been compared before but I like to see them side by side. Influence from the above pulp? Title from one. Image from another, using a mirror. When I saw the first comparison, I thought maybe the similarity was a coincidence. After looking at the 1938 Weird Tales, I'm not so certain. Silver Age cover with a related theme. Yes, I know they're not wolves. Jack
  20. Nice Selegue; I've got only one issue from this run but it's a 68 pg. 15 center!!! I love the early Ditko work!!! Thanks for looking. I was out of town all day and am catching up a bit. This is the only book in the run I have -- in fact, I've never seen the 15¢ issues. My expectations for Charlton books are very low, so this was a pleasant surprise. Jack
  21. ... I've never even heard of Secret Service comics. Kent Blake of the Secret Service, right? Are those 5, 6, 8? All with Sale artwork? Are they all über-violent? This is a Cold War run I'd love to read, but it's probably a long way from reprinting. Great group photos! Jack
  22. Vitaman from Heroic Comics 29. Weird. More details in the cigar thread. Jack
  23. Heroic Comics 29, March 1945, includes a very strange Vitaman story, Music Master, Flyin' Jenny, and the last Hydroman, most definitely not by Everett! Overstreet says that the painted cover is by Harvey Fuller. Here's the Vitaman splash page. Done in an odd cartoony style, it's full of fourth wall-breaking and odd gags about superhero conventions. The hero is sort of a budget-basement Hourman, getting his powers (whatever is needed by the plot) by slamming down a handful of vitamin B1 from that bottle around his neck! Jack
