Well, not the public library but my school library which would naturally have more items of that type in its collection. Not true here. U of KY is very conservative about buying graphic novels, strip collections and such, whereas the public library gets a lot of them. That's largely thanks to a local cartoonist who works at the public library and makes a lot of the "art" selections, plus us patrons who make sure they get plenty of circulation. JPS

A friend who bought this book absolutely raved about it! He considered it a bargain even at the steep price of $114 plus shipping. I'm already overflowing with so much "stuff" that I've resisted. Maybe I can talk the library onto buying it and the Nemo book, then borrow a pick-up truck to carry them home. Jack Get a van so they don't get wet. No worries -- we're having a drought. Jack

The Red Ryder entry has been researched and pages scanned since late May. It will probably go up next week ... You betchum! Jack

Might as well do it now and get a head start! I'll make the next quiz a little more difficult. Which will probably guarantee that only Scrooge will guess it. I believe it's more of a sad reflection of the amount of time I am on the boards which is less glorious Another big win, Scrooge! You had it solved before I even saw the question! I agree with the Charlton look. I wonder why. Did Fawcett and Charlton share a letterer? Soon we'll have to call it "A Year Since a Month in the Life of the Comics." Any new installments in the works? Not 'til that big Supermouse 17 score in Chicago? Jack in disgrace

I go the "quarter roll in pants pocket" route... gator or are you just (a little) glad to see me? Jack -

Mostly lame gags. I'll see whether I can pick out a highlight later. I was wrong. A better than average funny animal comic book. The two Supermouse stories are long enough to have reasonably clever and funny plots (probably by Joe Archibald) and the artwork (probably by Milt Stein) is consistently good. Here's a page. I really like the Sinister Scientist first panel and the fact that Supermouse is a Hero for Hire. I put it on my GCD index reservations. Watch for it there. Jack -
WOO-HOOOO! First Harvey comic book (recently mentioned on another thread), first Black Cat, etc. What a gem! Jack

How did I forget my favorite one? It was easy -- it's oversized so it wasn't in the stack with the others. Buck Rogers 2 from Famous Funnies/ Eastern Color in July 1941. The notorious "Is that an Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator or are you just glad to see me?" cover by Calkins! Yeah, I know it's a wreck, but I won it for the opening bid. If I were into that sort of thing, I wonder whether it would be a candidate for restoration. Probably not enough demand to justify the cost. Jack Cool, you got one! Thanks! I will say though that, although it still probably wouldn't be worth it, a simple pressing would probably greatly improve the fc eye appeal by removing the spine roll so that the missing pieces on the spine would be shifted to the bc. I'm pretty sure my wife has a steam iron up in the attic. Seriously, I was just thinking out loud about restoration. Not likely to do it since it's only my eye that it has to appeal to, and it already does. Jack

The seller just had the year listed. Had it been March, it would have been in the mail to you. This title is hard to find??? Mostly lame gags. I'll see whether I can pick out a highlight later. Not on these boards without some censoring. On a quick browse (all it will get), I was surprised to see "naughty bits" and couples (mixed and otherwise) caught in the act. Not particularly well-drawn erotica either. I actually bought most of these variants in hopes of trading them for something I'm more interested in. After the great build-up I've given this one, I'm sure it'll go like hotcakes. Jack -

Maybe this was a popular/recognizable gag from around this time? Like this scene from Public Enemy with Cagney. OK, good comparison but "from around this time" was 20 years earlier! Jack -
Daredevil # 24 Wow. Photographic memory? Jack

The GA "Short Bus" Thread Post your unpopular books!
selegue replied to shiverbones's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Posting my favorites from the big batch o' books I just bought, I realized that it's been a long time (been a long lonely, lonely, lonely lonely time...) since I've boarded the Short Bus. Although there were far worse comic books in the stack (Threshold: Mythic Sirens Pinups limited editions variant cover? So what it was only about 15% of the cover price. It's embarrassing!), this one was the best Short Bus candidate. Supermouse, the Big Cheese 18, April 1952, Standard/Pines. Unlike kindred spirit Atomic Mouse, who gets his powers from eating uranium-235 (a single isotope. How cool is that?), Supermouse eats Supercheese. Actually Mighty Mouse, who got his powers by eating everything in a Supermarket, was originally Super Mouse, but Paul Terry changed his name to Mighty Mouse when he got wind of the Pines character. Did DC ever litigate against Supermouse's name? Anyway, he was apparently Pines' biggest success. This lame cover gag sure doesn't explain why. Supermouse is attacking arch-enemy Terrible Tom with -- a grapefruit? And the mouse is far bigger than the cat, and the grapefruit is about as big as the cat? OK, artistic license. Jack -
No man, it's not like that! It's just that they're very, very pricey books. Pricey, pricey, pricey. I'm not sure I can emphasize this point enough. Pricey. Except for Speed Comics 1. The prices on that one just dropped, right? Jack some "Guide" you are!

Hey, I didn't know that. What was the first Harvey comic? Pocket Comics 1 according to Overstreet. Multiples of guide... very pricey... you're just trying to scare me away, right? Jack

Sounds like a sneaky ebay seller. If you post their ID, they'll lose lots of customers! "want to"?? No. "have to" is more like it. Jack -
Cool! Second Harvey Comic to boot! I'm plenty jealous. This looks like a book I could imagine buying. How scarce are these and the actual Pocket Comics series? Thanks for posting it! Jack

Dobie and Maynard by Oksner!! Those books crack me up with the updated "old guys' idea of hip" fashions. Probably Windy and Willy offer the only possibility of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" seeing the light of reprints. Great catches! Jack

Criminal! Mark my words -- they're going to regret that raise! Thanks. Which ones ya need? 1-17, 20, 21, 24, 87, 92, 94, 100, 120-123, 134, 152 -- next one is 206, but I don't much care above #200. I did overspend (for me) on a nice 252. Except for 100 and 121-122, the missing ones above 24 are nothing really special. I'm not a high-grade collector (nor a collector of high-grade books) so just patiently wait until I find a copy for a few bucks. I didn't realize until I picked one up that Marvel did a facsimile reprint of the old Spectacular Spider-Man magazine from 1968. It'll be fun to reread that one for a buck. Jack -
Amazing Spider-Man Collecting Thread!
selegue replied to Point Five's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
I accidentally put this in a DC thread. Apparently it belongs here. JPS A "late" Amazing Spider-Man 95 with an exorbitant 15¢ cover price. Sharp copy for about $12.50! This one fills a hole -- only 4 issues missing now between ASM 24 and 120. Jack -
The Brave and the Bold 29, second Justice League of America!! I wondered whether I'd ever find a copy of this that I was willing to pay for, and here it is. Not bad except for little Bob Ryan's possessiveness. I swear that I looked at this exact copy at a small show in Lexington almost a decade ago and rejected it as a much higher price, but that's almost impossible because this copy came from Minnesota. That leaves only B&B 28 to complete ALL of the Justice League books up to the 1997 JLA series, and scattered issues after that (since I'm only willing to pay about 25 to 50 cents for moderns). I have my doubts that I'll ever find an affordable copy, but fortunately I have a zillion reprints to keep me happy. Jack

Ooops. That one belonged in the 12¢ thread. Check over there! Sorry. Jack
