  1. This is a great cover but they kind of kill the impact of it by calling the guy "Abestos man". Oh an the word bubble doesn't help either.

893naughty-thumb.gif I love word bubbles in early Marvel covers cloud9.gif

I don't know why they stopped using them at some point but it was great while it lasted laugh.gif

  2. Great example and commentary. thumbsup2.gif

    Thanks!

Of note also regarding ST 106 is that it's tied (same month) with ASM #1 as being the first Fantastic Four cover apparition outside the FF comic book. It would be nice if CGC would recognize this at some point.

It's also (if I remember well), the first full appearance by the FF in ST (except for the origin recap in ST 101) I don't think that book would tie as first FF cross-over (ST is too FF-related), but in my own magic world, it does cloud9.gif

  3. This is the only cover where the torch is seen standing and not flying. And there is only one other cover where the torch is shown with his feet touching the ground - #115, and doing neither flying or standing in #103, and #129, and all of these involve 'traps' of some kind or another. So it does seem rather uncharacteristic to have the torch grounded in a cover for no particular reason.

Maybe an attempt to inject more suspence in the cover, with the Torch 'frozen' to the spot with fear...excuse the pun. confused-smiley-013.gif

ST 106 is another cover where the Human Torch is standing. This one's shares a same feature than ST 103, e.g. in both of these he is partially flammed-on.

Of course, that's Doug's copy of the book grin.gif

  4. This week, I will receive this one . It should be interesting reading in full color 893applaud-thumb.gif

Hey Frederic!!! Does Marvel Masterworks have a complete run of the Strange Tales or just those books as a certain selection?? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

For Strange Tales, Human Torch and Dr Strange stories are split into separate Masterworks. This one is the first with the Human Torch. There's two volume already available of Dr Strange stories, with vol.1 covering ST 110,111 & 114-141.

  5. Great book Mr. Pym and thanks for sharing thumbsup2.gif I love these covers and Kirby can make even the lamest villains look badass!!!! Maybe if Asbestos Man did have a "cancer ray" he would have been more formidible!! I agree with Red here that the color palettes are just amazing and it all works somehow. As far as the stories are concerned, The Torch tales can be found in "Essential Human Torch" and the Dr. Strange tales are in "Essential Dr. Strange"

  6. I do have to agree with Dadandson, the cover concept is not what you'd call classic. I'd put in the same category as those TTA issue's with 'the Spinning top' on the cover.

You got to think the boys were definitely scraping the bottom of the ideas barrel for that month's effort.

Although it's not a classic, I like that cover (especially the inking job)

This one is a great improvement from ST 110. They hit the bottom of the pit with that one! grin.gif

  7. Ok, whats the census on this book, 2 9.6's of which Doug owns the PC copy, oh and then there's this one sitting on it's lonesome devil.gifflowerred.gif

    ST1119.jpg

The 110 looks to be in plentiful supply next to this issue!

    Gorgeous book! cloud9.gif

What is not listed on the label (even with new labels) is that this issue marks also the 1st appearance of Baron Mordo. Not the greatest of super-villains, but an important one for Dr. Strange fans.

  8. Then the question is why? What caused the Atlas/Marvel staff to shift focus from

horror to sf to monster? Were sales declining? Too much devilish competition? Some

sign of the times? Also, how did this correlate with the start of ToS and TtA?

    Looking at the census:

    ST #70 was August 1959

    ToS #1 was January 1959

    TtA #1 was January 1959

What was so special about mid/late 1958 to cause this?

    Questions, questions, questions...

Good questions, especially when you compare S-F vs Monster era :

    TOS #1 (January 1959) - #4 (July 1959) : S-F

    TTA # 1 (January 1959) - #4 (July 1959) : S-F

    ST # 67 (February 1959) - #69 (June 1959) : S-F

Then starting in August/September 1959 the monsters start in the three titles 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Could it be linked to some movie (or movie genre) that became popular in the summer of 1959 ?

Searching on the web I found the following movies from year 1959 :"Giant Gila Monster", "Behemoth, the Sea Monster", "Gigantis, the Fire Monster" and "Monsters of Piedra Blanca" that have the same type of monsters than the one seen in ST, TOS and TTA from 1959 on...

Before 1959, big monsters movies were more S-F type. Maybe that's where Stan Lee got his inspiration.

  9. Anyone know which issue is the official start of the "monster" issues as compared

to the earlier "horror" issues? I think it's around #65-#70 or so.

I've wondered that myself... I have issue #66 and it's the early horror style then the next issue I have is #75 which is Taboo...monster stuff... haven't seen the covers to the others ( or can't remember them at this point. ) I think the early prototypes started at #68 though.

From what I see on www.comics.org, #66 is the last horror, #67-69 were S-F, and from #70 it's monster galore! (starting with the Sphinx in #70)

  10. I can't post the pics yet .. cause I'm too lazy at the moment. I just picked up :
