  1. thanks for the info.

yet, this production flaw allows for it to go that high?!

i agree that apart those flaws the book looks gorgeous with vivid/rich colours (in hand it must be nicier i presume)!

congrats for a great set of books... thumbsup2.gif

    regards

My understanding, is the following : With heavy pre chipping you can get to the 8.0 level (my ST 103 for example) if the rest of the book is reeaal nice. With light pre chipping (see ST 105 Pacific Coast copy on Heritage's archives) you can get as high as 9.0.

When a chip falls down then you get seriously hammered by CGC (see ST 108 CGC 7.5 copy on Heritage's archives and Burntboy's FF 16 CGC 7.0 on TVComics.com)

Still, it was a gamble when I bought that raw ST 103... as I had no certitude of getting that 8.0, although as you pointed out , that book is incredibly fresh (supple pages, great color saturation and gloss...and nice smell! insane.gif) and has great structure appart from the pre chipping.

It is one of my grail and it will be a keeper for a long time. cloud9.gif

  2. Second one : Strange Tales 103 Mass. Copy

    ST-103-Massachusset-2.jpg

To my satisfaction, CGC gave it a Universal 8.0 White cloud9.gif

don't want to rain on your parade, but 8.0 for a comic with all the visible/extensive damage on the right front cover?!?!?! 893whatthe.gifconfused.gif

    regards

That damage is called pre marvel chipping, a manufacturing defect resulting from the use of dull blade...if you want to know more about it there used to be a long thread on this in the grading & resto section... Some are allergic to it, not me grin.gif

If it wasn't for that, this book would most probably be a 9.2 and I would never had the opportunity to buy it...given my budget and the fact that ST 103 is one of the most difficult Silver Age Marvel comic book to get in decent or high grade...

    Best,

    Frederic

  3. Fourth : Strange Tales 120 (Harry "Burntboy"s copy)

    strange-tales-120F2.jpg

Thank you CGC (and Harry!), I got the expected Universal 8.5...with OWW pages! 893applaud-thumb.gif This one's a keeper, and the former Blowout copy will soon be back in the hands of it's previous owner...

  4. Third : Strange Tales 116 (Mr Pym's copy)

    strange-tales-116F.jpg

To my disapointment, CGC gave it only a Universal 8.0 OWW...I had hoped for a 8.5 but the chocolate milk stains on front cover killed it!

At the end of the day, it's an incredible 8.0 copy of a hard to find book...

  5. Thanks, Frederic. I'm looking for a nice ST #120 now. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

As you know, I have a nice ST 120 in CGC 8.5 grin.gif, and I'm waiting for another copy to be CGCed (Burntboy's) It's in Sarasota, and the grade will come up in the next two weeks...I'll PM you depending on the outcome thumbsup2.gif

  6. And lastly, one of my favorite Strange Tales. CCG 9.0 OW/W

very nice new books, and this one is my favorite of the bunch..... cloud9.gif

Yes, I agree, and one of the few SA Cap covers I've never owned . . . 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

    893applaud-thumb.gif

Congratulation! This is a great Kirby cover! cloud9.gif

  7. Some of the worst art I've seen in the SA...

    1233198-ST116.jpg

I disagree. Overall composition is nice and the coloring job is interesting. As far as the Thing is concerned, go see FF 18 & 19. He's as "rocky" on those covers. The difference with ST 116 is the use of greytone...

    Nice copy! thumbsup2.gif

  8. Did you snag your book?

No. In fact, I did not go after it since I bought recently a nice ST 104 CGC 8.5 OW from Korvac Saga and two other ST that I will send to CGC...

That ST 107 went for a much lower price than Burntboy's 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I'm sure a 8.5 copy will surface at some point (without writting on the cover!)

Until then, I really think you should give a shot at the 9.4 copy on Pedigree grin.gif

  9. New addition to my Strange Tales collection, both are CGC 8.5 OW :

    strange-tales-120-front.jpg

    Kudos to Rahigh thumbsup2.gif

does this mean the raw #120 i sold you didn't do too well???

Don't worry Harry, I have not send it to CGC yet. I think the copy you sold me has a fair chance of hitting the 8.5 mark (the copy seems so fresh! cloud9.gif) It's just that ST120 being scarce (especially since I'm sticking to CGCed 8.5 copies in my ST run), I just wanted to protect my downside with this purchase...If your copy comes out a 8.5, it will be the one I'll keep thumbsup2.gif
