  1. Today starts a few comic auctions on my Ebay store.

Some of the comics coming up for sale are:

Animosity #2 Signature Series CGC 9.8

    Silver Surfer #2 CGC 5.0

    Spider-Man 2099 #1 CGC 9.8

ASM #378 double cover CGC 7.0

Weird War Tales #111 CGC 9.0

    Wonder Woman #76 CGC 1.8

ASM #50 DVD Mini Variant CGC 9.0

    Rai #0 CGC 9.6

ASM #300 DVD Mini Variant CGC 9.4

Nothing to rare or crazy, just trying to get some slabs moved. There may be more than the ones I listed, I’m going through everything and putting them up. Please excuse the BIN prices on those. I put them high because I really wanted to see where the auctions went.

    Thanks for looking!

I just blocked my first person on FB! I bought a few long boxes of naughty girl comics last week and took the magazines the guy had as well. Promptly joined a group on FB for selling wrestling items and listed some magazines. Someone from Canada asked about a bunch, had me pull about 20 magazines and take photos, box them up for a shipping quote (which I had worned him would be high) and then ghosted me. I asked for a response about 3 times and he read the messages but never responded. So I told him after having me do all that work for nothing that he should at least be polite and respond if he was no longer interested. He replied immediately to that! Said I was on my high horse and his grandfather just died and he wasn't ignoring me. I told him he certainly was ignoring me as I could see the messages were read. Blocked him after that. Surprised his cat wasn't responsible for killing his grandfather!

I’ve done a bunch of selling on FB Marketplace. Be prepared to deal with a ton of fake offers, people wasting your time, and rude people as well.

When going to make a sale watch for “replica bills” (they say replica somewhere on the bill, last place I saw one it was the bottom right corner in small letters), counterfeit bills, and I personally don’t take checks.

Then the next problem is, if someone hands you a counterfeit bill or replica bill, it always turns into a confrontation. It can take a nasty turn very quickly. I’m not telling you to avoid this means because of the money you can save on eBay fees, but be careful.

I always conceal carry when I meet with anyone, and have my lady or a buddy with me carrying too. I’ve never had to use it, or pull it on anyone from a bad deal, but there have been people wanting to fight, call me a liar when I can’t except their counterfeits, and things like that.

From the sale of magazines and comics if you are shipping, I’d try and stick with PayPal. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories though of guys sending a raw book let’s say that was a 9.8, and they say it wasn’t as described, and send a 6.0 back. I try and video the packaging and shipping of the slab, or raw, but i don’t even know if it will help, at least it’s some sort of proof though.

I apologize for not reading through the entire thread to see if you would even meet up with anyone or just ship, but just be aware if that ever crosses your mind.

Its definitely a great place to get a bunch of peoples attention, but there are a lot of issues that can come from it too.

On a side note, I’ve also noticed people using Instagram lately to sell comics, slabs, and magazines.

I should note, most of these issues occurred from before I even started collecting comics. And some from the good old craigslist. There are two instances in the past year though that have occurred from the sale of comics while using FB Marketplace. But if two out of 20 are bad, that’s still pretty good odds.

Thank you!  Yes, I think Poison Ivy is a great character and hopefully will show up again in the movies at some point.  I feel like the book is a little undervalued.  What grade is your copy?

I’m not sure, I’m hoping 7+ maybe higher, but it appears to have a little resto, but I’m no expert. So we will see! I feel it is undervalued as well for such a known character. I guess we will see what the future holds. Until then, I plan on buying 5 or so more. (Like I said I love the cover lol)

For everyone else, I went to a local store after work just now. I found another cheap copy of marvel premier 15 so I decided to snag it.

Sweet copy! Yours looks to be in a little better condition than mine. My 181 has a kind of splotchy cover. The red faded in some areas. Nice pick up! I'm probably going to get another here soon, it's one of my favorites!

Sorry ADAMANTIUM meant to quote @Wolverinex

So looking at a listing tonight. I noticed it says "Authenticity Verified". I don't recall ever seeing that before. The listing does have the CGC link on it. Not sure if they are related.

I think the authenticity for seller “mycomicshop” has been around before this announcement. If I remember seeing it correctly. I don’t think they are related. I vaguely remember Ebay advertising for “mycomicshop” as comic consignors. I could be wrong.

I haven’t read every single page of this post, but I don’t recall reading an ETA on this new announcement.

1 - yes and no. depends on the comic and what I'm paying. usually I buy the books first then prescreen to determine if i should sell raw or get graded

2 - it doesn't matter to me to get a 9.8. I'm not buying books to get a 9.8 and if I have to get a 9.8 then I'm paying too much or it's not worth it me - better books to buy

3 - if you aren't sure where to look, I cannot help you. Plenty of examples here on where to find books. Your next question is going to be what books to buy. Again why should I or anyone else help - not trying to be mean but why should I give out all my years/knowledge and expertise for free. Do research. Look on these boards. Pay attention to the market. I would tell you to steer away from modern books. Yes there is a chance to make money but because of your situation (not a lot of room for error) I would stay away

4 - it depends on the book and the price, but in your situation I'd stay away

5 - I buy what I can buy and make money, hot or not, keys or not. Determine your lane and stay within it

6 - sometimes it's a hit or miss. my area is a lot more competitive than maybe a year ago. I still have some places or luck out at sales. Much of anyone's success is determined by how persistent you are. You keep going, you will find something.

7 - I don't know your area so I can't tell where to look locally. Outside of your area I will not share other places I look for books. I don't need anymore competition.

    8 - everything I can make a profit on

The biggest lesson I can give you is don't fall in love with your product. Don't buy things that you like. Buy books that sell.

Again I hope you don't take my answers as being mean but I am trying to be honest and make you aware of some realities that you are going to come across. If you were my friend I'd tell you to stay away from doing this. I'll use myself as an example. I see a lot of people buying vinyl records at garage sales. I think for sure there is money to be made. I see plenty of people going through boxes buying records left and right. That's money just staring at me. However I know zero about records. I have zero passion for it. I know if I try and look into it I will probably fail. It's not my area of expertise. Not worth it too me. Just because someone else is making money doing it doesn't mean I need to get in on that.

I don’t take it as mean at all. I know I have a lot more knowledge to gain, dealers to locate, contacts to make.

I asked some of my questions wrong, I see how that would be giving me your contacts, which you are right, you were many years to get. I do appreciate your response. Thank you for hitting each point as well.

This topic reminds me of great advice I got about 30 years ago. ALWAYS have a slush fund, money set aside that you can use without explaining it to anyone. My wife knows where mine is but respects it and leaves it alone, but in case I die suddenly she knows to go get it before disposing of my things!

We’ve been together a long time. We both know where each-others hidden fund is, but we don’t touch them either. I got the same advice from my father quite a while ago.

I know that no one was trying to be rude, I just shouldn’t of mentioned it at all, I’ve been sick, half asleep and was trying to be funny. That backfired lol, is what it is.

Like I said the more I read the post, the more I’m like why the heck did I even post that. I guess I have lots of questions, and was trying to get them all out at once.

stop talking about it with you girlfriend. Use only money from sales for new comics and put aside the money from sales until you find some more comics to buy. Occasionally buy her dinner and say that you are using your profits to pay for the meal. I am going to spend $1000-$2000 tonight at a seller's house (Comico Primer 2 hopefully among the buys!) and my wife is okay with it because she knows that I am using hobby money that has been accumulated from sales.

Agreed with this. We don’t really talk about it though, I was more trying to be funny with that aspect of the post, it got too literal with that, she could really care less. I usually do run it by her when I’m spending a larger amount though. We have good communication and I’d like to keep it that way.

All money that I accumulate on eBay whether it’s from comic sales or my other Ebay sales stays in a separate account.

    Advice in 3 steps

Step 1:  Before you make another purchase for profit you need to know comic books.  If you can't look at a collection in person and make a quick judgement on your max price and reasonable expectation on both profit and time to move the books then you are not ready to jump in yet.  You can still give it a go but you will be paying tuition in the form of lost profit.

Step 2:  Stay away from hot modern books because if they are already hot then by the time you get them and resell them they will be cold.  Some book however are easy to speculate and at worst break even, book like Thor 337.

Step 3: Most of the people making a livable profit are doing one of or both of these.  Finding collections cheap and flipping them by using their knowledge of what they are worth.  Buying bigger books at a discount and already have a large buyer base to sell that book to.  Finding collections is your best bet but honestly with a full time job and lack of knowledge the pros are going to beat you to it.

My own personal beer money and comic upgrade method is buying collection very CHEAP.  I then remove the big books, press and slab ($300 plus value).  I take the $5-$100 books and just run facebook auctions to move them quickly ( I make less money but books move fast).  I take all the drek and either donate it or sell it in large bundles cheap.  I basically just do this to buy overpriced Silver age marvel keys and would never do it to make a living because it is a grind.

I agree with this. My more cautious side is telling me to wait. I can tell a lot of keys. 70s-80s and up, but to look at hundreds of books at once at an estate sale for example might take me some time, I would not be able to make a split second decision.

For the information to stay away from the hot moderns, that’s exactly what I was looking for, and that makes sense. I have been staging away, and will continue to do so.

I was really wanting to hear how you all did it, but the more I read my post, the more it looks like I’m asking for you all to tell me how to flip books. I wasn’t trying to do that. I was looking at more information of what people did. But that would be giving away your secrets, and that isn’t what my intentions were. I have a lot of questions, I would have been better off separating them and asking at different times possibly.

Looking back thru my records, The DC Comics Presents was purchased from Kramerica, back in 2011.  Didn't realize it was that long ago.  He had it listed as a 9.4 and not a 9.6 as I previously thought, so, that takes some of the sting out.

It’s still a solid grade, and yea that definitely takes the sting off a bit. I have nowhere near the experience level as a lot of the people on here so I commonly have “stings”. Slowly getting better with time, more submissions, and learning where to look and what to look for.

So hopefully that makes you feel a little better, being able to hear my misery 😂. I had two subs I got back recently that I thought had at least a 9.8, maybe higher, and was sadly disappointed by 9.6’s. No graders notes on why, which I typically rely on to learn what I missed and what to look for. I’m slowly trying to get into flipping some (sorry if that upsets people, even if it never happens, but wouldn’t that be a dream come true, to collect and sell comics full time?), so the difference between a 9.6 and 9.8 as we all know can be pretty substantial. Still made money, just not nearly as much.

I have the same comic and was unsure if I had the matte version or glossy one. Someone told me it's very obvious if you have the glossy version. I.e. It is very shiny. I think yours like mine is the matte version.

I contacted CGC for their grading guidelines on Matte Vs. Glossy, and here was their response:

”This answer is according to our graders.  The glossy version does have a shorter right edge than the pages inside. But some copies of the matte version are also like that. CGC recognizes copies as "glossy" when the surface of the cover is almost that of glass. It's almost like someone poured a clear resin over it. If there is still texture to the paper, we will notate it as the "matte" version.”

Hopefully this helps clarify for everyone. When I had posted this originally, I couldn’t get a straight answer from anyone, and the only answer I did get was that the cover on the glossy was shorter, this is why I thought mine was the glossy version. So this makes a lot more sense.

So then do I have to pay the $120 if I want my books graded?

I would think so, I don’t know your exact location, but since you would be having one graded, that would take longer, and be a shipped separately from the other comic.

I wonder if there is some sort of customs thing that adds to the expense. It usually makes it worthwhile to ship multiple comics at once, to get the most bang for your buck with shipments. At least, that is what I have found for me.

I did run into an issue where my computer pre filled the form, but put the state (Georgia), in the country slot. I couldn’t figure out why the shipping was astronomical, I reached out to CGC (they are very good at getting back to you), and they informed me of the error that I had made. So basically I had it set to send the package to the country of Georgia instead of the state.

You can check for errors like that, but being in the states, it’s hard for me to know if that is an accurate amount. If you have any doubt, then reach out. That way you would make 100% sure that everything is accurate. To make the reply more effective, I would include your location (shipping information), and the raws you were planning to submit and which tiers you were trying to select (include that you wanted to press one, and that tier as well).

Also, so everyone knows, that the last few shipments I’ve sent through USPS have never shown “Delivered” in the tracking information. They still show in transit, which led to a lot of worry until they showed up in my submissions.

    Edit:

Sorry for the story, didn’t see that you weren’t a newer member, was just trying to help. My apologies, wasn’t trying to be condescending or anything.

  12. Hello everyone!

I want to start by saying thank you all for the continued support on the forums, and with all the knowledge you all have provided. It has been indispensable, and I appreciate it more than you all know. Over the past almost year now, I have learned a ton of information from reading all these posts on the forums, and reaching out to some members individually and just asking for help. So thank you all for that!

Ok, so I am starting to sell more slabs on eBay, and I have the intention of picking that up more. I’ve read of a few different names of websites that offer sales data, but I can’t remember them all, and don’t know which one is the most beneficial. So my question to you all, is which do you use, and why?

The one that sticks out in my head right now is GPA. 10.99 a month if I remember correctly. (I could be wrong and this could be the only one, but I swear I’ve heard of more)

Anyways, any input helps. As of now, I’ve just been checking sold auctions on eBay, which can be helpful, but only to a degree. It would also be nice to track sales trends (charts or graphs), to see if a slab is moving up or down.

Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to the responses!

Maybe I will have to look into that myself. I haven't read too much, other than AC 1002 wasn't her first appearance. I guess I'll have to do some more research first then. Thank you for that information.

Yea, I was thinking typically you would see that later on in the auction. Strange they did it this early. I mean this morning I was showing my girlfriend it was like $127.00, a few hours later $587.00.
