  1. With volume 5 of Captain America in the books as a "contained" volume, this set has every book, printing and variant in the series. My revised and final set description: From 2005 to 2011, Captain America has been under the helm of writer Ed Brubaker. During that time, the series has earned numerous awards and truly brought Captain America into the modern era for today's readers. The journey of Captain America during this time is a long and wide spanning story that brought back Bucky, 'killed' Cap, have a new Cap, bring back Cap and even manage to end with a sense of urgency for what lies ahead. Outside the comics, Captain America gained renewed interest thanks to the controversy it caused, from bringing back a character whose death was originally "sacred" to "killing" the title character, and giving a new Cap a new costume. It was in 2011 when the co-creator of Captain America, Joe Simon passed away. It was fortunate that he could see the character rise to new levels of popularity and see the creation of a successful feature film. Please enjoy checking out what is in my opinion, the best run in years. In putting this run together, I have been extremely lucky and I'm very grateful to a lot of people. They know who they are, and I say Thank You. This collection simply could not be what it is without having had a lot of help in putting in together from fellow enthusiasts and collectors to CGC Signature Series witnesses and staff. A majority of this collection is graded under the Signature Series label, and another BIG thanks goes out to all the various creators who were willing to sign my books, allowing my collection of this series to be a true one of a kind. Signatures throughout the series include: Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Michael Lark, Mike Perkins, Butch Guice, Marko Djurdevic, Frank D'armata, Alex Ross, Stan Lee, Joe Simon, and others. I've been very fortunate to have met many of the people who have worked on the book too and I have to thank them for chatting with me, signing my many books and in some cases, sketching for me too! To date, I have managed to acquire three 9.9 graded books as well as three 9.6s. When starting this set, I originally wanted strict 9.8s and for a long time I was able to maintain it. When it came down to it, I would rather have a 9.6 in my collection than not have the book at all, and in the case of my 9.6s, I will "settle" for them until a 9.8 surfaces for those books - if ever. I've taken the opportunity to use the back cover image slot to showcase various parts of my Cap collection which have relevance to the particular issue. This ranges from issues which I have managed to have signed by contributors, to wraparound cover art, sketches or other CGC graded books or instances where the back cover is something other than an advertisement. Please note that for a majority of the issues in my set, I have included descriptions of the issues as well as notes to most issues. There are SPOILERS throughout.
  2. With my latest submission back from CGC, I can now proudly say that currently, my Captain America (2005) CGC Registry set is 100% complete with a total of 108 books! With my latest submission back from CGC, I can now proudly say that currently, my Captain America (2005) CGC Registry set is 100% complete with a total of 108 books! The last batch of books I needed was to finish off the recent Captain America: Reborn miniseries with all of its variants. I still need to work on upgrading a few to 9.8, but other than that, it's 100% complete! Over the next few days I'll be working on scans of back covers where appropriate as well as adding in more detailed descriptions and recaps for recently added issues. I hope with my most recent additions that my set is in contention to be included amongst the 2010 CGC Registry Awards for Best Modern Set. 3. As of March 2010, I have a complete CGC 9.8 run of Captain America #1-50 as well as #600 and #601 - including all printings and variant covers. Collecting slabs for me started a few years ago, and it was with me submitting a few of my favorite covers from the Ed Brubaker Captain America series. Not only would I eventually upgrade from the books in my first submission, I would actively be on the hunt for NM copies of the series ever since. There are only two 9.6's in my entire set and those are issues unrelated to the main series, one being a Anniversary Special Sketch Variant and the other being an issue of Marvel Spotlight, both books super rare! I've been very fortunate to have come across signing opportunities, as well as having certain connections, and regularly checking Ebay for possible CGC Captain America slabs for my set. With my latest submission from CGC, I have finally filled in various unfilled gaps in my set from #37 through to #601. At Wizard World Toronto, I submitted the remaining issues of Reborn for Universal Label grading, so when I eventually get that submission back, I will be even more up to date with my set. It is my hope that with the return to original numbering that this series will continue to go on strongly with Bucky-Captain America currently at the helm. I imagine Steve Rogers will eventually return to active duty as Captain America when his movie comes out. 4. Now not only is my set currently at 100% completion, but now I also have grades of 9.8 for every single slot in my registry set! The last two books I needed were 9.8 copies to regular cover and variant cover to #6 of the series. I was always satisfied with having 9.6 SS copies that were both double signed, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to getting 9.8 copies of those issues since they were available online! As a result of getting these final books in hand and registering them, now not only is my set currently at 100% completion, but now I also have grades of 9.8 for every single slot in my registry set! 5. With these last two books I now have the most complete current Cap set in the World! The last two books were graded onsite in Wizard World Chicago, and I just got them in my hands today. I can't register them just yet because the serial numbers are too fresh, but I had to share the fact that I got these books! So the first one I got is the Captain America #8 Joe Jusko Variant, signed by Joe Jusko and the grade came back 9.8! This copy was even the original variant copy I picked up from my LCS as it came out. My search for a better looking copy never resulted in anything, so I just submitted my raw copy when I had the chance for Signature Series. http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z118/justoneasian/CaptainAmericavol5CGC8Variant.jpg The next book is yet another Rare one for the set. I hope a slot can be added to the registry for this one. It's the Captain America #25 French Variant! - La Mort De Captain America. It includes a bunch of reprinted extras (all in French) such as the original Golden Age origin of Cap, the Alex Ross painted origin of Cap, New Avengers #27 and Fantastic Four #534! I had a good buddy of mine take care of getting the cover artist's signature (Alex Maleev), Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Ross's sigs all on the book. http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z118/justoneasian/CaptainAmericavol5CGC25FrenchVarian.jpg
  6. My registry set isn't exactly 100% complete, but it's 97%, and way ahead of anyone else who also has a set registered in the same category. The journey has been long and tedious, but as of today, I have nearly completed my hunt for NM+/M copies of this outstanding modern series, arguably one of the best comics that's been released on a monthly basis since it started in 2005. At 97% complete, I actually own numerous books that are currently 1-of-a-kind books on the census. Being a member of the CGC forums, I've been able to request updates for the set and specific books to be added to the set (such as the German variant to Captain America #25!). I've also been fortunate enough to get my a large portion of my reading copies to the series signed by various members of the creative team who have worked on the book from issue #1 onward, and have included scans with pictures of my graded books. I am also extremely fortunate to have the most recent Cap issues graded and in my possession, all the way up to issue #36 (the current registry only goes up to issue #35), and in addition to that, every issue (save for 1 variant) from #22 onward through to #35 is graded under the Signature Series label. I am very pleased and proud of my Cap registry set, and I absolutely love the series. Every single issue has been oustanding, and it's almost impossible to believe it, but every issue has somehow been better than the last. I love Ed Brubakers knods to Cap's history and continuity and just how everything falls into place in the series. If you dont read modern comic books, this is one of those classics in the making, and I highy suggest you get at least a couple issues or a tpb for the series. You won't regret it! I hope if you're reading this entry that you take some time to check out my registry set. 7. Seeking those elusive comics for my set I am in dire need of gradeable copies of particular issues from the current Captain America series. These tough to find in high grade issues are: #8 (variant), #9, #13 and #21. As the series became increasingly popular, back issues became even more scarce than they were before, making gradeable copies much much harder to find! I've been all over the city of Toronto looking for the copies that I need with no success so far. What makes it even tougher is that the paper used to print the books in the series is not the best quality, making printing defects prevalent throughout the entire series, and making mint copies of particular issues extremely difficult to find. I never thought collecting a modern series would be this tough until I got into grading my comics.
