  1. This is bizarre...not your example but the way the boards work. This was not here when I posted last night. Anyhow, I know it's not fair to look at Manga through such a narrow lens and the two titles I'm most familiar with didn't use them much, at least as I recall. Again, it's not fair to generalize but I look these pages, all that you posted, and instantly know that they are from Japan (Asia anyway). Beyond the black and white, they have a very specific look and style. It's not bad in any way, in fact I'm impressed with the fine lines and detail. The other book you posted pics from, is it the basis for the movie "Edge of Tomorrow"? This bugs me, too. It shouldn't but it does. I really thought it was my head injury, as strange things bother me now that never would have before. When I first tried Manga, it was Americanized in that it was flipped so that it read left to right. I notice that now, it's common to leave the art was it was originally done and we read right to left instead. To me, "Manga" is just the term for Japanese graphic narratives. It's probably as far off base as calling them "comic books" is here in the U.S. The majority of what is published here doe fit that name as most of it is mindless superhero fare but there's so much more to it. Look at Peter Bagge, Jeff Lemire, Daniel Clowes, and Jeff Smith. They do amazing work that is so much more than just "comics" but they get lumped in anyway.
  2. Have you watched Teen Titans Go? My son watches it, so my wife and I watch it as well. It's hysterical, they did an episode on buying real estate that was funny and actually informative. It works on many levels and I was really impressed.
  3. Good Lord *choke* ! What passes for articles these days.... Twitter makes me crazy. If you can't say what you want to say in 140 (or whatever the stupid number is) characters or less, move to a different platform. And if you're going to make an article out of nothing but quotes, for the love of all that is holy, quote people instead of just posting shots of their Tweets. Anyway, my Manga experience, like many older collectors, is very limited. I read and enjoyed Akira but was a bit underwhelmed by the film. I guess you could argue that the book is better than the movie! Lone Wolf and Cub also held my interest for many issues but beyond those two, I haven't been even remotely enticed by other Manga titles. To me, there is a different visual language (not trying to be funny) in Manga that I simply don't understand. I suppose if I read more, I might eventually understand it better. My big problem with Manga is the first one that most of the uninitiated seem to give, it all looks alike. I see three basic styles, the giant eyes which looks to generally be lighter and funnier books, the epic sci-fi style which looks to be the books like Macross, Full Metal Alchemist and then the hybrid of the two which look to be the "slice of life" mentioned so many times. I'm sure I'm overgeneralizing, but that's what my casually observing eye sees. I also thought that it was funny that one of the complaints about American books at the top of the page was "This means what you see on the cover might not be an accurate representation of what you'll be reading" but at the bottom of the page reads "...a new reader has to go by looking at the cover art -- which may or may not be a good indicator of the content within." At least in this aspect, the American comics and Manga are very similar despite what the author of the article would have the reader believe. A solid point that was brought up is the American comic shop system and the direct market. I'm very familiar with it but no longer participate as it seemed absurd to me to pay $5 a month to find out what I'm going to spend money on 2 months from now. I can see how this pre-order driven market would be confusing and overwhelming to a new reader/collector. In hanging out and talking with the owner of my LCS, I've seen a shift in the buying/reading habits of customers. He has talked about fewer people buying the monthly books, holding out for the collections (TPBs) instead. The older readers buy the monthly books and younger readers get the collections preferring to get the story rather than the collectible, plus the collection is generally cheaper than getting the individual books. I did like the point in the article that Japan knows how to market comics better. The implication is that it's because there are more types of stories but if one looks at the indie market, there are all kinds of books and stories available. Optic Nerve is a "slice of life" book that I thought was amazing but it never moved past the indie publishers. I've recommended it many times and, of the people that have read it, no one came back unhappy. That it's not widely known is a failure of marketing in my mind. I loved Cerebus and Matt Kindt's Mind MGMT was one of the best books I've read in years. For those keeping score at home, the three titles I mention are all creator owned, another facet hyped in the article. All in all, I don't know that one is superior to the other, they're just different and appeal to different demographics. To the Manga fans here, what's a good example of a high quality title? I'm open to a lot but to be fair, I'm not a fantasy or monster (of any kind, vampires to Godzilla, they just don't appeal to me) fan so lets avoid those. It doesn't have to be Watchmen level stuff, just a good read. I'll try it!
  4. Is this like having to catch four connecting flights with two of those bing in Atlanta? Have fun! Sorry I won't be able to be there but we'll cross paths again eventually....
  5. We stayed on the outskirts and rode the "trolley" (train) into the Gaslight District, we got out right in front of the show. It may be a good alternative to trying to park.
  6. This is brilliant! Find a place close to the Trolley lines, even. It might allow it to be cheaper if it branches out from the main show but still remains easily accessible.
  7. My problem isn't social anxiety, it's sensory overload. I can't watch everyone all the time, hear only the "important" things, keep an eye on the exits, avoid running over people, etc. I used to love conventions but now it's exhausting regardless of size.
  8. Thank you, I was really excited about this one. I've got a few getting done this weekend that's got me even more excited.
  9. That's right! It's Chuck Norris! Big thanks to Dork Buzz for this one!
  10. SDCC is completely out of touch. I've never heard of 24 of their 56 special guests. In all fairness, I'm not up to date on modern books, but still... On top of that, some of their special guests are annual special guests, Sergio Aragonés, Mark Evanier, and Maggie Thomspon off the top of my head, and that's not to diminish their work, they all have a place in comics history and have made significant contributions but do those contributions make them worthy of special status at the world's biggest/best comic convention every year? I think for the average fan, SDCC is long gone and other big shows are beginning to follow suit. Heroes and Baltimore come to mind as relatively pure comics shows, with limited media guests and strong comics-oriented guest lists that include the newest up and coming talents to the most seasoned veterans. I think that conventions that maintain a narrow focus on comics will do well but that the pup culture shows that so many of us frequently lament will also do well. As fastballspecial wrote, we are victims of our own success. We spent decades on the fringe, doing our own thing and hoping for wider recognition and acceptance. Well, we got it. Frankly, I was more comfortable on the fringe.
  11. You are right and so is Chuck on this point. It is incredibly frustrating, particularly when everyone around you is ready to go. Unfortunately, it is routine at conventions and trade shows across the country and it could be any of a number of reasons. Maybe the driver rubbed the show contractors or union the wrong way. Maybe he had a 53 foot truck and because of poor planning, he can't get into the dock until other trucks clear out or the size of his truck will block others from getting in (the needs of the many....). Maybe Chuck rubbed the contractors the wrong way with repeated complaints and/or questions and this was their revenge. Tradeshows and conventions are a racket and those in charge know it. It's rare that even organizers can get a handle on the contractors that handle the freight, setup, and move out.
  12. I went in 2006 and was shocked how little it had to do with comics. The movie studios and toy companies were edging out the comics dealers then and by all accounts, it has only gotten worse.
  13. It's official! Mile High Comics won't be at SDCC. Chuck has finally bowed out. Will other big dealers follow suit in the coming years? Chuck laments the same things that have been said again and again by both dealers and fans, SDCC ain't what it used to be.
  14. I'm struggling with it, still. I've sent it along to a friend that works with databases and compatibility but it's a side project and no progress has been made. Just curious, how long have you been working with CB to get your problem worked out? I spoke with them today, informing them that the deletions down to the May 11 update. They told me I was the only one having such problems and that there was no way to go back to that particular update to see what happened. To use their words, "it's like looking at train tracks trying to decide which direction the train went." He made it clear that there was no interest in trying to find the problem because it can't happen. This is how it has been with them all along. The user presents problems, they can't solve them, so it must be isolated to the user's computer. Another common scenario is that the database "is corrupted" and must be repaired by them with no explanation as to what caused the corruption in the first place, how it might be avoided, or how one might repair it if/when it happens again. Other users have come forward on their forums to express similar problems. I love their program when it works but when it goes awry, it's a disaster. Their customer service, though, is lacking at best.
  15. One more time for my facilitators that responded. I think I have worked with all of these guys at one time or another and had everything go as smooth as could be. Hank Pym is taking subs for the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas which has some awesome Trek guests. William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew,George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, John De Lancie, Karl Urban, Ron Perlman, and tons more! August 2-6 Kevlar is accepting subs for the Walker Stalker in Atlanta with Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Melissa McBride, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Alanna Masterson, Michael Rooker, Ron Perlman, and whole mess of other Sons of Anarchy stars. October 27-29 Rich Henn is accepting subs for both Monster Mania shows. The first one is in Cherry Hill, NJ August 18-20 and another one in Hunt Valley, MD September 29-October 1. Kate Beckinsale and Val Kilmer will be at the Jersey show!
  16. As a reminder, if you're attending shows and taking submissions, please let me know and I will list you so we know who to contact! The list below has creators that have been requested or that generally have a large enough following to be mentioned for the good of everyone. Please check and see if the creator you are looking for is listed! Also, please remember that if a creator you are looking for isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't making appearances. It just means that no one has requested them to be added to the list yet. If you want someone added, just ask! If they are listed with no dates after their name, then they have been requested but have no appearances in the next three months. Why three months? First, it gives 90 days notice, give or take. That is generally enough time to make arrangements to attend a show or get something to someone who is attending. Second, it makes things easier and less confusing. Making appearances at shows is generally a side job for the majority of these people so while Bazooka Joe may have agreed to attend a show nine months from now, he may get behind on his deadlines, get sick, have a falling out with the promoter, develop hodophobia, or any of a million other things and he may have to cancel that appearance. Not all shows list cancellations, the guest just disappears. It seems to happen less frequently during the three month window. Checking the guest lists against this list then checking this list against the guest lists is incredibly time consuming. All of the shows listed have a link to their site. If the suspense is too much for you, just start clicking away and see if the creator or entertainer you are looking for is slated to appear at an upcoming show. If you want someone added or know of an appearance, you can either add it here or PM me and I'll get them on the list. Expect ridicule if you ask anything covered here. If someone is accepting submissions for shows or mail in signings or whatever, please let me know! Again, I try to keep an eye on things, but I've had some slip by in the past and really don't want to slight anyone. I’m a big fan of a level playing field. Popular Sci-Fi actors appearances link. 17. I imagine he will turn up again someday. He's big into indy stuff now and his work is still beautiful. He's one I would love to meet, regardless of his signing policies!
  18. Sorry, it seemed funny at the time. I can't recall his last appearance and it really doesn't matter anyway as he is now on the "don't witness my signature" list at CGC. There are precious few books out there that were signed by him, though.
  19. Which one of these? Or is it both? Their site lists one show in Cherry Hill, NJ in late August and another in Hunt Valley, MD at the end of September.
