The Clone Saga (90's) was the last time I recall being engaged with Spider-Man. Don't tell Mary Jane! I hope you've all read The Life Of Reilly, the 35 part, behind the scenes memoir, about what went on during the storyline. The fact that, if we take them at their word, the writers were unaware that Ben replacing Peter wouldn't be permanent, let them go wild doing things they wouldn't have done otherwise. Peter striking his pregnant wife springs to mind. I know! I know! "The artist made it look worse than the writer intended!" The fact that Reilly was written the way Peter used to be, yes, before the marriage, made him all the more refreshing! Yes, the story was extended way beyond anything it should've been! I never liked married Peter, or the notion of him becoming a father, and I despised the resurrection of Norman Osborn to conclude the story, but there were some real fever pitch moments, like Ben finding out he's the original, and Peter hanging up his webs, which seemed like for good at the time! Call me naive, but if the writers thought Ben was going to be the permanent title character, I hope I can be forgiven for believing it too! The 'death' of Doctor Octopus, and of course, the 'death' of Aunt May, all later undone! Sure, it was mostly sand and pyrite, but there was also some real nuggets in the storyline too!
