Yeah, but isn't this the same guy who forgot to proactively inform the collecting base for the first 5 years of CGC's operations about this rather significant change in terms of their restoration definition and grading standards, especially since everybody within both the hobby and industry had viewed standalone pressing as restoration back then. Since Borock was the tip of the “maximization of potential” spear, now embraced by our benefactors, why is he now gone from there? p.s. There’s a nice lean style to his work. He’s good with human anatomy, and given the chance, he may have given a run for their money to some of the big name GGA artists

I actually chose the Crowley copy. The paper was lower quality, but I thought the cover image was stronger. marwood, I agree there’s a moodiness and an ominous sense of threat to this cover that I find irresistible. anyway, I know nothing of this artist and am also glad a thread got started

This book has been turning up a lot lately, and it’s one of my favorites. The Crowley copy sold a few days before the Promise Collection copy, and after careful consideration, I made my choice and pulled the trigger

The fact that the depressed staple on your raw copy is so similar to the one on the Promise Collection book corroborates the notion it’s a production defect. Assuming your raw is unpressed, how else to explain the similarity? I may be forced to change my mind here. As a fellow owner of a Promise Collection book, I sure would prefer to believe my depressed staple is a production flaw.

I can’t disagree. but knowing what we now know, I wonder if the relaxed grading on the Promise Collection, which helped create a $22 million auction, was part of a mating ritual between suitor and bride

You are remembering right. But right or wrong, I can’t get it out of my head that the depressed staples generally found in these books are due to pressing. Maybe the feeling will pass, but strong within this one, it is. from @MasterChief (Somewhere around page 24) “Dean and I happened to be discussing the collection right after a few of the teaser photos dropped in the thread. He asked my opinion as to whether or not the books had been manipulated. I mentioned that they appeared to be untouched as pressable defects were apparent here and there. I went on to say that the images looked to be pre-CGC submission, perhaps taken when the collection was examined. That thought became obvious with the reveal of the certified Catman #28. While we only have one example to go on so far for comparison purposes, many realize that the likelihood of the collection, in whole or in part, getting the treatment is a bonafide reality. The doctoring of the Catman #28 is particularly interesting, in my opinion. The structure of that book has been altered from its original conditional state as discovered, to that of a perceived appearance post-print production book from the 40s. As mentioned, the book perked my curiosity so much so I sprung for the grader notes. There is no mention of work performed on the book in the notes. Just the typical obtuse annotations. The exception being, the "pedigree coding" (whatever that means) for the distributor mark.

OK, I guess that is how I will start viewing the GPA data. Mentally, I will start adding approx 6% to whatever sales price is reflected therein. Thanks for the idea. I don't sell books, so I have no need for a resale tax certificate. In fact, I just now had to google it, and I see your point: for people "in the biz" of buying and selling, they are obligated to report their earnings. I see the resale tax certificate allows them to save a few bucks by avoiding taxes for their purchases. Yes, this definitely would complicate efforts to accurately reflect sale prices, because you can never know who is paying sales taxes and who is not. Thank you for your post

do we have any boardies here with an affiliation to GPA Analysis? if so, the site could be made more accurate by including sales taxes into their report data. especially with the Current record setting Promise Collection. Is there anyone that Heritage does NOT charge sales taxes to? The sales of the Promise Collection are already in GPA, but I see they are inaccurate by thousands of dollars since they do not account for taxes in their sales report data. the GPA data does add in the BP, thankfully. I just think they should also add taxes. Bidders factor in sales taxes as well as BP when placing bids.

Good advice, but if I actually followed it, I would be bookless. Better to be penniless, I say!
