  1. This one arrived in the mail a few days ago. Great price from the seller, but it was shipped bagged and boarded in a bubble envelope. 893whatthe.gif Except for that, I'd buy from this guy again.

Not golden age or pre-code, but I'm proud of this acquisition also. Purchased from SNE as a VG+, it arrived in my mailbox as a VG+. My previous experience with SNE was very positive and I'm happy with this one also.

As an added bonus, the book contains a house ad for Flash 105. Very nice.

  2. That Seven Seas 5 is not slabbed. You should immediately send it to Sacramento so it can join its fellow raw Seven Seas in my collection.

I know its a sacrifice on your part, but you should consider what's best for the book. You don't want your slabbed books making fun of its raw state an harming its self-esteem.

There's a copy of the illusive #4 on Ebay right now. I would've gone after it, but I really want a higher grade copy for that specific book.

I'd pass on that #4 also. It's got a chunk from the cover and it's overpriced (IMHO). I'm off the GA buying wagon for a while anyway. I paid a tad over guide for SNE's VG+ Batman 121 this morning. Let's hope it truly is 4.0 or better when it arrives in this mail. Still better than paying 3x guide for the CGC 6.0 121 they also sold.

  4. And I thought my copy was in bad shape. (Someone took a hole punch to the cover and many pages.)

How did you like the book? Read it yet? Recenty I've been contemplating purchasing more books in this run.

Picked this copy up with about 40 other "well read" GA issues...that did have some real Spirit stories(Police Comics). I've still got a lot of reading ahead of me, but I will be able to compare when I finish.

Oh, and someone mentioned how Midnight wasn't Politically Correct...well the one Spirit story that I have read so far "T'aint" PC either. gossip.gifdevil.gif

1940s comics are never going to be PC. That's why we love them, right? I mentioned the book being racist long ago. These books are racist, and the Spirit's portrayal of Ebony and others was racist. What I think prevents them from being offensive is the fact that they must be read as historical objects, with consideration for the mindset of the times. There's no way many of these books could be printed and distributed as pop culture today.

  5. My purchases from today's Sacramento Comic Convention. I quadrupled my Jungle Comics collection from one to four!

The convention was a bit weak, comic-wise. I almost purchased a very nice late issue Planet, but decided against it in favor of some jungle action. I also got two very nice Brave and Bolds - 62 and 73, both in at least VF condition. (And both for very nice prices.)

I can't find the magazine with the Lily Renee pictures. It may have been lost in my move last year. (Don't worry, I know where my Great Comics #3 is!) Anyway, here's a link to the magazine in question.

I checked the mag and there are no pictures of Lily Renée in it actually.

    Uh...

... it was a different mag and I can't remember which one?

How about I take the fifth and scan some Jumbos for everyone to ogle this weekend?

  7. HAW! great head-fin on the bad gal.

Do you know who is the artist Renée (signed)?

Renée Lilly (sp?). She also did interior work in these Planets. Some great splashes in these issues.

    Thanks.

I'm finding lots of entries for Lily Renee (probably should be Renée), pen name Reney, in GCD. Same person.

It would be great to get more of these credits in the GCD!

    Jack

    GCD?

Lily Renee was one of the few women creators in the golden age. She wrote and drew for Fiction House. I have a magazine with some pictures of her at home. I'll drag it out and scan it if you want.

  8. Close ups of the 7 and 13, I owned the 7 raw so scanned it prior to submission. I haven't scanned the 11 yet.

What's up with that Johnny Thunder picture in the lower left corner. Looks like a thug getting beaten on by the corner grocer. "Squeeze my produce! Ha! Take that!" POW!

  9. Those are some really "bad" good girls, seank.

And was there a Hitler goes to heck cover there? headbang.gif

Thanks. The majority of my Golden Age collection is Fiction House. And that is a Hitler goes to heck cover there. VG/F copy, purchased in the 1980s for about $60. No way I could afford one now (if I could find one!).

  10. Great collages! There's nothing like a wall of comics so I built my own comics rack. Here's a pick from a Good Girl Art session where put together books from 3 different collections to try and create full runs of Fox good girl comics. The new rack that I built since then is 8' x 8' and holds about 100 comics.

    Seven Seas 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6! Where's a #4 for a complete run!

  11. Too bad we don't have a comics-related Golden Turkey award for DTA...

Then maybe it's time to create one.....

How about a bunch of board members who no longer buy from DTA but are happy to give Harley Yee their business. Consider how much money DTA lost from his fiasco.

And how much Harley is going to earn for his services.

  12. I doubled the size of my CGC collection with a Batman 283 CGC 9.4. It makes my other 9.4 (red label) look like it could be a 9.6 or better.

I also picked up a Batman LoDK #100 raw from my LCS. I need 12 more issues to complete my LoDK set, it's time to get off my [#@$%!!!] and do it.

  13. All I know is I finished reading issue 58, said "Holy [#@$%!!!]," then a few hours later a PM from chrisco shows up entitled "Holy [#@$%!!!]."

100 Bullets is the best series out there right now. It may be one of the greatest comic books ever.

  14. My favorite, and one I have three issues of, is the short-lived "Seven Seas Comics." It ran for all of six issues near the end of World War II. Issues one and two had boring and awful pirate coveres, but issues three through six had wonderful Matt Baker South Seas Girl covers. cloud9.gif Every issue had Matt Baker art. I won't post covers because I've posted my copies of #3 and #6 all over this place. A full run of Seven Seas is one of my collecting goals. You'd think with only three more to go, it would be easy, but those suckers can get pricey!

  15. Anyone out there a hardcore 100 Bullets fan besides me and Chrisco?

All I have to say is that if you're not reading this series, you're probably missing one of the best-written comics ever. In the latest story arc Azarello provided us with post-modern structure, an incredible third alternative, fantastic characterization, superior foreshadowing, gun fights, crime, low lifes, jazz, death, and a plot that kept you guessing at every turn of the page.

    Incredible work.

Plus, Risso's artwork is top-notch,fits the story perfectly, and he knows how to draw women.

Unfortunately, I recommend starting this series with the first TPB and working your way up to the present. Azarello is presenting a true graphic novel, told in 100 installments, that will stand the test of time.

My rating: hail.gifhail.gifhail.gifhail.gifhail.gif (out of 5).
