  1. My advice to the original post would be to put the 9.2 and 9.8 side by side. Inspect the corner well. Inspect the spine well. Inspect the edges. If you see nothing, then the problem could be something like a fingerprint, colour rub or even an interior problem (they inspect the inside and factor that in too). Lots of times books are hit for having a minute tear to the edge of an interior page or even a bend/fold to the corner of an interior page that the person who submitted the comic failed to notice.
  2. This intrigues me...is there a list or site or even forum here that discusses such books?
  3. 9.0 Clean the back up a bit and maaaybbbbeee a 9.2 but 9.0 seems right.
  4. Agree, you can def do both. When your sole focus becomes buying to sell, then you are a seller and less so a collector. I bought Jungle Comics 1-3 from Blackthorne last week. Why? I wanted the Stevens cover and figured I would get all 3 issues. I also bought a Jungle Action 6 with the purpose of grading and likely selling. You can totally be both. I also buy the odd collection, keep some and sell the rest. I don't need it all. Plenty of keys and stuff I don't love that others do and I am happy to sell that along to keep funding my own collection.
  5. I mean, would this not be an easy way around all of this debate? If a character appears in say 3 panels or less, at the end of the story or even shadowed and named/unnamed (but revealed in a subsequent issue so it is clear who that was), it should be noted "first brief appearance". If it happens again, "second brief appearance" and so on. If the character appears on more than two pages, throughout the story and is part of that issue's plot of even underlying plot, it should be notes "first full appearance". If they also appear on the cover, it should be noted "first cover appearance" If a character appears on the cover but is maybe only in the issue breifly (Xmen 282 comes to mind), it should be noted "first cover and brief appearance". And then, whenever the first full appearance occurs (next issue in my example), then the note of "first full appearance" will appear. That is how I prefer to phrase and view it. And sure, you can get into second full appearances, etc. but really those don't matter as much and I don't know that you should waste label space noting that...just my feelings.. I know CGC labels I think up to the fourth appearance of Green Goblin on the label. Why? Maybe it is because appearances of early major characters are easier to track than they are for more modern characters? Do labels show "fourth appearance of Deadpool" for example? Anyway, I am happy to field people's conundrum books that don't fit my label philosophy lol. If you are going to ask about ad or preview appearances, well those should be labelled as such and if seen on a label, it should be known that they predate the actual comic appearances.
  6. Yes that appears to be the case. I was talking some deep level oil retraction science stuff or a way to wash the contaminated area so that the fingerprint cleared off but not the inks. these are invasive methods I know but I was curious and had done some experimenting. I’m aware that dry cleaning does very little for these fingerprints and like you said they now become part of the book. Sometimes I wonder too what people had on their hands. I have a copy of that DC 100 page Spectacular that Wrightson did the cover for. The black cover has yellow marks and finger prints in yellow…like what was on that persons hands and do I even really want to know!?!?
  7. I sold my copy on the boards last year that I came across:)
  8. I have always wanted to experiment with the removal of fingerprints. I have yet to find a method that works nicely without destroying the book, especially on really oily prints that have remained on a book for a long time.
  9. Fair enough...when did these books see a major increase in value? Or when was it known that he appears to have definitely lifted panels from the various comics? I am fascinated by the desire to collect these but I suppose it is really no different than myself wanting a certain artist or a certain motif on covers. Also, it seems strange that certain copies of those romance books are difficult to find, no?
  10. I get that there are a handful of romance books (and a few war related ones) that Lichtenstein ripped of panels for his artwork. I still don't see the reason people value them that highly....
  11. That browning does not appear to be foxing and appears to be some other staining...either way, when it is that heavy on a bronze age book, CGC hammers it. Do not be shocked with a 4.0 grade here. I will go 4.5 just to be safe
  12. I'd go 4.0...might sneak into the 4.5 range.
  13. Pressing might remove a slight non colour breaking bend. Pressing will not remove a crease or tick that breaks colour.
  14. Hi all, Up for sale are 5 Marvel Masterworks books. Asking 175USD shipped. PayPal for payment. Offers welcome. First claim takes it. Please message with any questions…thanks!
  15. I think I read about enough ball kickers from CGC so that when I submitted, I graded super harsh and was actually happy (and may have gotten a semi gift grade on one book only because the flaws were most prominent on the back and the front was pristine).
  16. Not a 9.0 Can a press and clean improve? Yes. Also...how is this a key book? It seems nicer looking copies are only selling online for around $25-35. I would not waste money grading personally.
  17. You were hoping for a better grade than 9.4-9.8? Those are all typical high grades and generally the best people should hope to get. You won't get a 9.9 or 10.0. It just does not happen. Those grades are reserved for the most immaculate books. If you upload some pics of your books, there are folks on here happy to help provide grade estimates in the Hey Buddy Can You Spare a Grade forum. Familiarizing yourself with corner wear, spine ticks and other very minor flaws that affect the grades is also helpful.
  18. I think that this appears to be production. You would want to get close up on the staples and spine and look along the interior spine. If it was some sort of frankenbook that people created, you would see original staple holes or some other holes on the cover. Same at the centrefold. The liklihood of lining up staples from the cover on a book to another is extremely hard to do, especially on two different issues. A neat error for sure!
  19. Haha I know if I don’t I will regret it
  20. Yeah same one. Didn’t realize a thread was started. I’ll monitor it!
  21. The yellowish or tannish spots are known as foxing. Paper oxidizing I believe. It happens usually on comics that haven’t been stored in great condition. Not mold but also won’t clean off like most contact dirt.
  22. Thread already started for this apologies
