And to bring things full circle, apropos to this topic, I decided to concentrate on this piece over the other great DPS of Deathlok and Ghost Rider in the same auction because, among other factors, this is a cover and that was a splash.

Great topic. Lots of food for thought. Re: Modern Covers, my 2 cents is that they are, and will remain, a completely different beast from Gold/SIlver/Bronze covers. I'm a relatively new collector and my tastes run relatively modern. The oldest cover I have is a Deathlok cover from 1991 and even that isn't dressed. Just the image. CAF tells me I have 22 covers - they are all stand alone images. Not a drop of text anywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but when I'm at a con and I see older covers, it definitely gives you a different kind of thrill and the combination of title, image, words really helps trigger a maelstrom of memory. With the modern covers, as other have mentioned with the many variants, and also with the advent and uptick of grading, the variant model is going to hold very strong. I'm in line at cons to get a simple autograph or a sketch/remarque, and other people have multiples of multiple comics to be signed and graded. The variant covers are a goldmine. Regarding the price of (high demand) modern covers, I find that they can be quite high, particularly if they get a very exclusive variant bump. The D'O's are expensive. Felix is doing a great job for his artists - modern splashes and covers are going for 8 - 15k in some cases. However, it's nice that you can still get a cover from a great artist for much less depending on the title/characters. Ed McGuinness' work has a wide range. In fact, I really should find a way to have an acetate overlay made for all my covers. I think it would really add depth and make viewing them an even more multi-dimensional experience. If anyone knows of any person doing this kind of work I'd appreciate a link.

Nothing covering the art. I did think about alternate pages of vellum between the artwork, but it turned out to me not necessary because the mat frames keep the art quite far apart from each other, and it’s also nice to see two pages side by side without the overlay. Also, Nick Derington shared that Chip Kidd has done something similar in the past.

The DPS at the top, of The surfer burrowing into Ego, has 12 separate depictions of the Surfer. Amazing!

Haha, I took what I could get! I think everyone who picked up a whole issue is a winner, and anyone who gets any page of issue 4 is equally lucky. I can’t even imagine what 5 is going to be like! I do like that this does stand a bit apart - it’s amazingly legible as a story without the words, with the only difficult transition being his awakening on Ego. Thanks for the kind words.

I had the idea to do this and I was very fortunate to get my damn hands on this artwork. It's absolutely gorgeous and very suited to this kind of presentation. The book is quarter bound in black leather and the rest is clothbound. While the book is structurally sound, it is extremely heavy so it's advisable to never lay it completely flat open, but instead prop up the covers. I worked with a bookbinder from NBSS in Boston, the nation's oldest trade school and an incredible place for continuing ed. The end paper is hand marbled Himalayan 100% cotton rag. Everything is archival. Each page held in an enclosure by fit only, and they can be removed individually from the top. I've attached the scans below. Enjoy! Was this the one in the “keep” mailer? I saw someone try to mix it back into gen pop. I was digging that page too. 4 times I went to the table he wasn’t there. D’oh!

In retrospect I would have boxed. 9 per side. Helps the artist too.

I had a plan but it quickly fell apart. Ideally I wanted a Stan Lee on the front and a Kirby on the back, and then surrounded by heads - but this is nice. Good luck with yours. I like the concept.
