I also believe the Dell Giant is the first Beatle appearance in comic book form. And yes, there are file copies of it. Many years ago, Metro had a large number of Dell files and this one was listed. Probably long buried in collections now.

There are MANY early appearances of the Beatles in comics. Some just covers and some with actual stories. Many from the 1964-1966 era. I have a lot of them. I would have to dig them out and look at the indices to see if any of them predate the Dell issue. None are fully dedicated to the group though.

WOW! Quite a collection! I only have the YELLOW SUBMARINE one. Now on to the hunt. So it is your opinion that the DELL GIANT is the very first comic appearance of the BEATLES?

  2. Thanks to everyone for giving me info. However, I still don't have what I am looking for. I would like to know what comic (no magazines) of the very 1st appearance of the Beatles in a comic whether it is a cameo or full appearance, unofficial or official. No photos but actual drawing of the Beatles. Anyone know?

  3. Thanks for the info. This is proving to be very interesting to me. So for decades it was considered that OWAW #81 was the agreed 1st appearance of Sgt.Rock and I can see that. It has "Rock" on the cover and it even says "THE ROCK OF EASY COMPANY". DC even reprinted that issue but NOT #83. Why would they do that if issue 81 was not considered the "first appearance". Who decided that issue 83 was the first appearance? Was it just a general consensus? Did the market decide?

Quick answer today is Our Army at War 83.  Used to be 81 until a decade ago… as the hobby settled on 83.  DC war books were anthologies, 3 unrelated stories in each comic, with no repeat characters or continuity.  Plus, the US defense dept coinage Able, Baker, Charlie divisions (Easy Company?  Not sure if Easy was real or. made up…) led to a lot of stories of Easy Company featuring its sergeant.  These have been considered “prototypes”.

There are a lot of discussions here about the slight differences in 81, 82 and 83 as Sgt Rocky “coalesced” into one main character plus individual soldiers in Easy Company for the remainder of their adventures.

Thanks for the info! I actually prefer OAAW #81 since it has a better looking cover over #83.

  5. I am doing some research on comics and I wonder does anyone know when they started adding the UPC code on comics?I know they started in the mid-late 1970's.  Does anyone know what the first comic to have it was. I have to say the UPC has changed the look and esthetic of the comic book cover. Thanks in advance.
