PGM Detective Comics 474

I'm glad, that's what I think too and what it was sold to me as. So all is good. -
Showcase #17 1st, app Adam Strange
William-James88 replied to AmbassadorSlip's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I can't tell, does that big crease on the top right break colour or is the white line I see a reflection o the crease? if it breaks colour then presing would not help but if it does not break colour, then yes I would say go for a press! Also, as someone asked, is this detached at one staple? I would say 3.0, exactly the kind of book I am looking for to purchase. -
Between 2.0 and 2.5. The biggest flaw is the tear in the back so cleaning and pressing wont get rid of it. It's also a bigger detractor from the grade than the tape (which would be allowed at a 4.0 grade). This is an example of a comic that just can't be made more valuable. I would not slab it since such a flaw makes it easy for most to agree on what grade it is. As you can see, there is very little variation on the grades we are giving it.

woah wait a sec, maybe we are not talking about the same thing. @theCapraAegagrus the crease I was talking about was this one: This book does not have a length wide crease of any kind. If you are referring to the line below, that is just how it is printed. -

Alright, the good thing here is that the visual semblance of a crease is only on the cover, so pressing it would limit the crease to a white line on the cover. I might do that then. -
Sending in Graded Comics.

no, the only thing you can do to have all chances on your side is to pay extra for a press after it is signed. -

that crease really kills it, huh? I'll admit, I am surprised. -
Is there a grading appeal process....
William-James88 replied to Will96's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
As I learnt yesterday, the problem with stainging near the spine, as is the case with my book and yours, is that it contributes to staple rust and that is another big no no with CGC, if it's severe enough. So the staining double kills it. -

Damn good question. I just checked and while it is not apparent inside the book, visually, you do feel an indent when you run your finger where the crease falls, on the first 3 leafs. It gets more faint each time. -
Along with asking for your opinion on the grade, I just want to verify something. The red ink at the top and the blue ink at the bottom of the back cover are production flaws right? I remember reading that being a norm for copper age DC books. FYI, I just realized the scan makes it look like there is a lengthwide crease, but there is none. There is no indent of any kind, that's just how the comic is printed.

The main issue I see here are 3 small spine ticks. You can see two of them near where the water reaches the land. My question now would be if this could be higher than 9.2 or not. I am really not good at grading above that. Oh and the pinks blotches in the back cover are not colour transfer from another comic, it is simply the add of the inner back cover (which is a bunch of small cars).

I was surprised at how high Detective Comics 469 is in the guide. Good thing it's not what I paid. I did pay the price on 474, but hey at least I have it now.

Thank you so much for answering. And I see where you are coming from, there is indeed rust migration on the back cover. I will look at my books and check the inside to see if the rust propagates throughout the pages. Also, while its not the grade you wished I still wish to congratulate you on owning a copy of Avengers 1, that is super cool. -

Thanks for getting back to me. This makes me wonder something (and everyone can chime in, I'd welcome that), how much does staple rust lower a grade? I ask because it's one aspect that is not clear to me at all, even after years in this hobby. Is it like a tear or colour breaking crease where there are certain grades that are now unatainable due to their existence? Or is it an extra defect that will always bring your coming down an extra point lower, like an additive fault? From what you are saying, it seems additive. Like nomatter how low, having staple rust will bring it lower (unless you feel staple rust would not be ok on a 4.0). I ask because have some really nice SA books where the main flaw is that the staples are rusty and I have no clue how much that detracts from the grade. -

Hey @Will96, here is the book I was talking about. Check that cover, it looks great (at least to me). But that grade is deplorable. And the reason why is simply due to stains. -
Thanks for this. I never saw these books before, post them in this thread when you can if there are less than 10 on census: I will say though that I can understand how those specific comics ended up that way. the back and front both look like comic panels and I am assuming CGC doesn't get a lot of these in. Of course, the staples show the right orientation but I can see how someone could make a mistake in this specific scenario. Also, damn, CGC really doesn't like stains.

So then they were just half a point off from what you thought you would get, that's pretty good. Speaking of stains, when I will have a chance, I will post another good example here of another cool key book that was brought waaaaay down due to the back. -

William-James88 replied to William-James88's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Not sure if they are rusty. They are still shiny silver though the bottom one does have a small dark speck on it. In any case, the kind of discolouration/rust found here is ok for an 8.0 so I am not sure what is bringing down the grade to a 3.0. I mean, most people gave this issue a 3.0 and it is riddled with spine wear and colour breaking creases across the front cover This one has none of that so I don't see why the grade would be so low. -
3 a day, each comic should have its own thread.
