  1. New members join the CGC boards everyday, but some just lurk around without saying too much. The point of this thread is to give a heartfelt welcoming, and encourage our new boardies to introduce themselves and say hi. Hopefully, with your time spent here, you will learn some things, make some friends, and ultimately, enjoy yourselves. (thumbs u I'll start. I'm Andy. I love DC war comics, but have branched out into every which direction you can think of. Right now, I'm right into Golden Age books and classic covers. Don't be afraid to ask any questions. That's how you're going to learn. We do, however, have a search engine, and some people may end up asking you to use it. To save yourself a potential smidgen of ridicule, you could consider trying that first. So, without taking up any more of your valuable time, I'll step back from the podium and pass the microphone to you. Welcome to the boards, my friends!
  2. I took a look and unfortunately don't have the answer....
  3. Canadian price variants as well as newsstand/direct editions within the Canadians.
  4. I honestly can't remember - did we make that a definite no-no on the board sales? Dan The seller is being upfront with his terms. If you don't like it, don't buy from him. No buyer's protection whatsoever, so that plays into account for me.
  5. It's pretty clear in the rules: Just odd no one is saying about it. I know I can't be the only noticing this. Are you talking about Moondog's threads? Bingo! I respect Moondog enormously, but don't like seeing anyone with 4 sales threads sitting on the first page. All of those threads could have easily been created in one. I wanted to say something to him a good number of times, but then I held back, thinking......ah, he's Moondog. Still, he should know the rules and abide by them. If you're reading this Gary, no disrespect.
  6. Just in case there are folks thinking of large size scanning beds for CGC books.
  7. Hey guys, Can you give me a range that a coverless Hulk #1 "should" fetch at retail? I haven't held it in my hands yet, so I'm not sure of it's grade. perhaps some of you have an idea of an approximate price for that book in the following grades: G VG F Thanks in advance! Andy
  8. I agree. If the 100 post minimum is implemented, then it shouldn't make any exceptions. I'm glad that Best is legit, but not impressed with selling right out of the gate. Bad taste in my mouth right from the beginning. They're just a business, selling comics. What's wrong with their wanting to sell here? Do they have to be my friend first? I've been vocal that I'd like there to be a 100 post minimum for board members before they can begin selling. That's me, that's just my thoughts and wishes. From their point of view, they shouldn't have to make friends before selling. Under these current settings, they certainly can post sales threads right out of the gate. If I were in their shoes, I would have put a bit of thought into my strategy before starting a sales thread with a $50000 book, with my very first post. Perhaps introducing themselves to the community before trying to sell? I like the community here and don't really care for the business only approach. That's me and maybe I'm alone with that sentiment. Anyway, I'm just talking out loud. I am listening to everyone else's comments, including yours. There are some angles and things I hadn't thought of, so I'm definitely getting something out of this, even if nothing changes. Yeah, I hear you. I gotta say though, the single post seller is the absolute easiest to avoid. How do you do it? Count his posts! If you force him to post a bunch before selling, you've just made it harder on yourself to separate him from the rest. On the flip side, maybe it'll so dissuade him that he'll just leave and we'll never have to deal with him at all. But of course, this will most likely happen to legit sellers as well, so who knows? I personally don't care if people come here just to sell comics. The sales forums are for selling comics. If it's not a scam, what do I care how tight I am with them? I mean, I much prefer dealing with people I know on a more personal level, but I have no wish to turn that into a rule.
  9. But how are the mods going to build that? If there's going to be a 100 post requirement, it's gotta be set up technically and work automatically. Otherwise, it's just up to you as a buyer to make note of a seller's post count, which you're free to do right now. Cannot be built. We can always ask for eBay handle and/or references in their thread. I couldn't see that being taken as threadkrapping.
  10. That bad, huh? Oh well, just trying to think outside the box...trying to think of a plausible mechanism that would make new sellers invest time/energy in understanding the community, if that is the desire (under the theory that a simple post count would not do so, because someone can just post 100 dancing bananas in a test thread, or some such nonsense). Of course, like a simple post count, some form of this quiz idea would also likely turn away not only some of the scammers, but also the legit Best in Comics types... Don't take it the wrong way, you're just talking out loud, just as I am. I could search their 100 posts and see 100 dancing bananas and just avoid them. Makes me think of Count's first 200 posts. I think 100 of them were this one:

  13. I'm really second guessing myself now. Could be legit, but it's really anybody's guess. He said he couldn't find the sign up email from the forum, not that he couldn't remember his username. I don't know, at this time, I'm just happy to be on the sidelines rather than one of the 2 or 3 parties involved.
  14. So, you'd like him to have to post 100 times before selling his Exciting 39? Absolutely. (thumbs u I don't really care either way, but seeing a single post seller ... is that not an excellent way to know who not to buy from? It is. I'd rather never see a single post seller ever again, though. If I did care (I'm starting to ), I'd argue that I don't see why someone shouldn't be allowed to sell here without also wanting to hang out and shoot the breeze. Maybe they're just not a breeze-shooter. And if we require 100 posts, will we not view 100 post sellers the same way we view one post sellers today, with skepticism and distrust? Some would, sure. Some wouldn't. I'd feel much more comfortable being able to research their first 100 posts to make that call, though.

  16. I hear you...I guess this recent rash of this nonsense just has me a little jittery. But, if a scamster wanted to get really sophisticated, here's a possible formula: 1. Go search the grade me forum to find a cool (and expensive) book that was posted by a user some time ago with a very small number of posts that appears to have gone inactive. 2. Create a fresh account claiming to have previously had an account here (referencing the inactive account associated with the grade me post years ago), but unable to resurrect it because of forgotten passwords, etc..., and offer for sale (without current pics) the very book that was posted in the grade me forum by the inactive user...wool pulled. Sounds like a sophisticated effort, I agree...but if the straightforward scamming approach is proving ineffective, perhaps one would invest the energy to get a bit more advanced. Having said that, I agree that it might be legit...as I said, I'm just a bit edgy because of the increasing frequency of apparent scams we've seen lately... Could have happened this way, although this book wasn't in the PGM section. We'll see how it all plays out.

  18. I'm thinking he's perfectly fine, to be honest. Could be wrong, but I doubt it here. He posted exciting 39 in the gold forum without calling it "Exciting Comics 39", that why I couldn't find his book until he gave his username. If he were a fake, how could he know to select this particular book that was posted 3 years ago? And give us his username? Still the old username only has 22 posts, but my spidey senses have calmed down now.
  19. With all the spamming in the Sales Threads sections, I suggest we petition (ask CGC nicely) to set a minimum post count before allowing new members to post there. My suggestion would be 100 posts. It would be nice if we could restrict it to thread starting, but I don't know if that's an option. I know this has been discussed before and obviously never implemented, but more people seem to be on board now with this latest rash of scams on our boards. Once we get a good amount of feedback from you guys and your suggestions to outright exclusion from buying and selling (ie. posting there), or just thread starting in the Sales sections, and what number to set as the minimum, (deep breath), then we should start a poll with the appropriate options. Thoughts and suggestions?
