You might want to post this in the Grading & Restoration issues, as I think you are alluding to an apparent staple holes that make this look like the cover might have been reattached or married from another book. It would also be hard to know if someone attached a repo cover from just pics.

If by less harsh you mean not as hard as on the equivalent pieces missing from something else, yes. The guide says from 9.6 (very minor) to 4.0 (entire right edge). 5.0/5.5 is probably about right where other defects are contributing to the grade.

you might get a 9.0 on the right day

Maybe a 6.0. A 9.2 with a hole would have to be a clean, barely noticeable pinhole. You have to be careful with ebay sellers, there are good ones, but also those who either intentionally inflate grades or have no idea how to grade.

4.0. You can likely buy a better copy for about the same price as grading this one.

Looks like a standard miswrap to me, which is only downgraded 9.0-9.8 depending on severity. I think there are enough other issues that the miswrap is ignored. Looks like a 7.5/8.0 to me. You can find my most recent returned book (Nick Fury 7) that has the staples misplaced a couple of cm onto the front cover off the spine fold. Still a 9.4.

4.0 Universal, 4.5 GA bump

all corners and edges need to be visible in the photos. Looks like this has some kind of spine roll and something going on in the TRFC, but it's hard to know exactly when in these photos. If there are specific issues, those should be highlighted.

White covers show all the dirt, so it's hard to say how well it might look with a clean. The reddish smudges on the back are a concern. Maybe 7.0/7.5 with a c/p

The thing to watch for on non-color breaking creases is evidence of damage to the paper fibers. Color issues with creasing are worse, but if a press didn't take the bend out, it could land lower than what it might appear in just photos. I'll say 7.5 with some possible upside.

Yellow backgrounds are hard to grade b/c they hide defects pretty well. Guessing 8.5ish

in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?

3.0/3.5. Definitely below 4, but beyond that it matters how much of a GA discount the large number of defects would get. I wouldn't be shocked if it went as low as 2.5. I don't think there's an upside to regrading unless the case is damaged.
