PGM infinity gauntlet #4
scburdet replied to comicjoe1234's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
>9.2 -
I had a couple key sword-and-sandal books I dabbled with the idea of sending to the Roy Thomas signing, but ultimately skipped b/c the value/demand for these doesn't seem quite high enough to justify the cost. Kind of regretting that on a few of them b/c it would just be a cool thing to have. I share these from time to time, so I can make a call if there's another RT signing opportunity.
-
No problem. I managed to deduce that based on the white being the natural color. I hope this is a 7.5 b/c that's what it was sold as.
-
7.5. The wear above the "TWELVE" is the difference between being in the 8s and the 7s. when factoring in the spine ticks.
-
6.0±0.5. Some spine stress, the creasing and wear at the top corners and whatever the color-breaking line is on Marvel Girl's head.
-
With the medium size spine stress creases and the wear on the upper right of the front cover, this is a 7.0±0.5 for me. I can easily see this as a 7.5
-
I don't have this one, so I can't help with the page sequencing. If it's at the end of the book like these usually are, I can't see how it could be assembled or printed as an error w/o earlier pages being out of order. Assuming that spot on the bottom on the back cover is just a little crumple, not a tear, I'll say 9.2±0.2. With the two-ish little spine ticks and the back cover, I can see it getting to the NM+ & above, but a very nice book.

PGM Black Cat Comics 1 (1946)

3.5/4.0 b/c of the missing pieces. If a GA expert says it's OK, I'd press it to take out the spine stressing. Cool book -
PGM infinity gauntlet #5

I was going to say 9.4-9.8 as it's hard to be more accurate with high grade comics using just photos, but is that a tear on the back cover going to the outer edger from Wolverine's boot? That could knock you down a bit if it is. -
Please help me judge the condition of the comic

I am very not confident about what to expect from these regular paper books. I only have a few Captain Britains and a FOOM in this format, and the two I send for pressing/grading are still sitting at CGC. My suspicion is that cleaning only really works well with glossy surfaces and there's some soiling on this book. Pressing maybe takes some of the divots out of the spine, or at least makes them look better. They really can't be color-breaking since the spine is white, but those groves have collected some grime. My WAG is 6.5±1.0. High degree of uncertainty b/c I have very little to go off of.

Love this cover. Seems like you've got a slight miscut as 9.8s look like they have color above the publishing/CCA bar. A few light spine ticks that lower the ceiling for a NM grade. My biggest concern/question is what looks like an indention between Hobby's head and Spider-Man's foot. If it is what I see, then you're down another ~0.5. I'm going with 8.5±0.5 with the higher end possible if that indention presses out.

So, my presser/CGC conduit kind of turned his nose up at this book. Not b/c of it's condition, but b/c of the sheer volume of these floating. I can't really disagree that the market seems to be inflated given the large number of copies that are always available for sale. I have a direct edition of this book graded, but I am sitting on this newsstand edition. This feels like a book I should do *something* with since newsstands are desirable to some collectors. I remain pretty indifferent to owning newsstands except that it looks slightly better on the collection ledger. A plan starts with an approximate grade. I see a few smallish spine ticks, but other than that a pretty sharp copy.

PGM Wolverine #1 (1988)
scburdet replied to comicjoe1234's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I see a couple of medium-spine ticks that break color and some very light ones that might be pressable. I might go for 9.0/9.2 if that was all, but the spine corners look worn/rounded just enough that it might drop this down a grade. I'll say 8.5±0.5 with the lower end being possible, but not likely. -
It happens to all of us. I've found several defects on books that I never noticed by going through the process of photographing them for PGM or in sending to CGC. Disappointing, but better than finding out after one comes back slabbed. This book still looks pretty nice, much better than lots of copies you'd find in online marketplaces

GRADE IS IN: - Four Color 878 (Peanuts 1)
scburdet replied to gadzukes's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Going with 4.5±0.5 based on the small pieces out of the corner, the spine stress lines and what looks like indentions from a sketch of Charlie Brown head in the the blue. Seems like there might be a small tear toward the bottom left of the back cover? You'd need some GA forgiveness to go into the 5s. Still a very sharp looking book. The colors look bright and the white areas are only slightly discolored. -
GRADE IS IN - Strange Tales 180 (UK)
scburdet replied to gadzukes's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I count at least 1/2 dozen spine stress lines that break color to varying degrees. Pressing will help with the creasing but not the color break. This probably puts you around 7.5 -
PGM my amazing spiderman #294
scburdet replied to comicjoe1234's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
spine ticks & rounded corners. The lower corners on the back show some color loss, scuffing or wear. Maybe a printer's crease running parallel to the outer edge of the back cover. Pressing might get this to an 8.0 -
Better photo backdrop: yes. I do believe that's a tear on the bottom right of the front cover. That corner also appears to have a small crease and rounded corner. The tear alone, guestimating it's length, is automatically knocking this down to 6ish. So, I'll say 6.0±0.5, but I'd say 5.5 if given an ultimatum. Looks much better than the number overall

Leave it. If you take the added staples out, there will still be staple holes.
-
Yeah, the rust migration is an issue and the wrinkle needs pressing provided it doesn't damage an old book like this. Any sort of significant staining like rust migration reduces the ceiling to ~5.5
-
it goes in cycles. I'm sure others will comment, but it can take several days for a critical mass of people to stop by
