  1. The timeline doesn't indicate that. CGC investigators were interviewing the accused months before the swap-gate concerns were brought up.
  2. In fairness to CGC, cameras can be a proactive visual deterrent, but they are typically reactive in terms of viewing the footage. It could have been months before a single book was even known to be missing. It's very possible that all the books were stolen in the timeframe before even the first theft was investigated by reviewing camera footage.

  5. The part I'm that is troubling me is the (seemingly) lack of a criminal referral. It's one thing if it's company property that was stolen. But this property belonged to customers. Even if they were paid out on their lost books, surely they suffered some hardship or loss through the process. It seems to me that there would be an obligation to refer this case to law enforcement for criminal prosecution on behalf of those third parties who were affected by the alleged criminal action. I don't see how keeping it private or contained to civil court would be an option in a case like this. But I don't know the law.

  8. I think this is a fair question. Would be good to know if a criminal complaint was filed also, or just a civil suit.

Pure speculation on my part, but I'm guessing at the time of the interview they were still hoping to get a private settlement with the employees that would keep this from being made public in a court filing. Further speculation on my part; looks like the husband was working with the investigation back in October...maybe he tried to avoid implicating the wife (who is still selling on Ebay). When her involvement was revealed, they realized that he wasn't being completely honest (it's mentioned in the court filing that they don't think he has given complete information). A game of chicken between the accused and the CGC team took place with the accused thinking that CGC would not want to go public with a court filing. All speculation on my part with no information beyond what everyone else knows.
  10. Maybe get your requests in writing formally in a polite-but-specific response to the customer service email? Ask that person to take your request up the chain of command and get you a response. I think that the more specific you are in your request, the more likely you would be to get action.

I don't mean to tell anyone what to do, but at this point, with receipt mentioned twice and no timeline, I think I would be responding back with my own politely worded reasonable request for compensation. You did your part and complied quickly with their requests. I don't think it would be unreasonable at this point to articulate some terms and conditions of your own. Such as what you want, when you want it by and which obstacles (such as receipts) you find unacceptable.
  12. That's going to become like a scarlet letter for buyers in the know. Check the grader notes on 9.8's, stay away if it says, "spine stress lines break color".
  13. I think I get what you are saying. It's possible that when the scammer bought or received a legit 9.8, he only cracked out the ones he was most comfortable could be regraded at 9.8. The scam would lose significant value if the original 9.8 came back as 9.6 when submitted a second, third or fourth time.
  14. I heard a Stanford alum tell a story about having a possible heart attack on campus. When he got to the medical center, they were very calm and not very concerned. When he asked why they said, "you're not having a heart attack, you're having a panic attack...we see it all the time". I think one possible explanation is that CGC customer service sees so many "panic attacks" each week that they may not take it seriously when it is an actual heart attack. Another more likely explanation is that the system is just too complex for a customer service representative to be able to get definitive solutions to problems like this, so they create a "note" and hope that works.
  15. I agree that the unusual amount of (generic and consistent) grader notes is the most unsettling piece in this puzzle. It doesn't fit very well into a narrative that this was just a random guy pulling one over. The grader notes wouldn't happen at reholdering, they would happen at initial grading. It does lead one to wonder if someone on the inside was anticipating that whatever book was inside the case down the road might come under scrutiny. The grader notes could be designed to give some reassurances to someone in the reholder department who had any hesitations about the book they were reholding. Also would give some reassurances to a consignment house or eventual buyer who might have concerns.
  16. Ouch! MCS has a CGC 9.4 consignment for $275 and another for $309: X-men comic books issue 109 (mycomicshop.com) I had this situation happen years ago with another known scammer. When I Googled his Ebay name and found out he had a reputation, I messaged him through Ebay. I said that I was going to let it go as a mistake, but now I see that he has a long history of this kind, and I would like him to accept the return or refund 30% of the purchase price. After a brief back and forth and threats to take it straight to Ebay, he refunded 30% of the purchase price.

  19. If you are referring to the @Sorensen7 purchase, there is no possible way this would come back on the seller. If Capital One reimburses, it would be an internal expense on their part. They can't say "buyer sent item to a 3rd party who stole it, buyer wants seller to purchase price". This would have to be just a goodwill gesture on the part of Capital One.
