I'm getting conflicting information on what his first appearance in comic form is. Otherwise, it's gamers monthly, and I don't consider that to be it. Is it Sega's mini comic, or the 1/4 issue they released a year before Archie comics released #0? Confusing. I think it might actually be a little known issue of Justice League Europe #33. It came out in December 1991, and Overstreet doesn't even list it. Thoughts?

How do you tell the difference between the first and second printings? Did they reprint them all? I'm one of those people who have to start from the top, get the most expensive books out of the way, and then work my way down. If you can hang onto the 9.6 for a little while, I'll definitely buy it. I just don't want to start buying the series if it's going to be that difficult to obtain the later issues..

Thanks. I'm trying to make a set of these. If anyone can tell me how hard it is going to be to complete, it appears that it would be you to ask. What's the level of difficulty in putting a super high grade set together?

Questions. I looked for the 3-D issues of Blackthorne up in the census, and i couldn't even find a listing for them. I've seen some of them graded, so i know they should have them listed somewhere. Where would i find them? That, and how are the glasses secured inside the book? Were they originally wrapped, or was it connected to it inside? Thanks!

Has there been a substantial change in currently published books to warrant a new Age ? Something that really marks the spot ? If not, then the Modern Age should do just fine for now. Just MHO.
That's what I mean about it taking a while to gain some respect for 80s books. It just hasn't been long enough. Give it another 5-10 years and all of a sudden the "Copper Age" books will be treasures and highly touted. It seems that what was hot, then cools down, becomes totally uncool, until it is really old, then it is cool again. Like disco. Disco was laughed at all through the 80s and 90s. Now it is getting some respect again.
It's been 8 years, and I think he might be right. 80's books are starting to get some respect.

Wow! How Is that not a 9.9?
-
Old thread, but is there any new info on any of his art for sale? And does he do conventions anymore?
-
Oh, hell yeah! I can pick one up for a few hundred bucks now, and the price will only continue to drop as more pop up. That being said, the ones I've seen in 9.8 look no better than 9.6's. I must have sent in 20 copies, and 18 were 9.6 ,and the other 2 were 9.4's. From what I recall, about half of those would grade a 9.8, with the now allowable stress marks and pressing.
-
Adding to that... I looked at the census and was blown away by the number of #21's in 9.8 (45?) I had about 10 of them which would get 9.8's now due to pressing and what I've seen as lower grading standards. If there was ONE tiny spine stress at all, or a slight tick in the corners of the spine, it was an instant 9.6. I remember it was years before one was found, as I offered a handsome bounty for one. Good thing I left collecting for a while.

It's cool to see this thread I started years ago is still going strong. I miss my books, and I'm hoping I'll get some of them back!
-
you are correct on all accounts.
-
I quit collecting shortly before a 9.8 surfaced. I know there are 2 of them now. Id still be interested in owning one someday, but im not going to shell out the dough I was going to back in the day.

to be big fish in little pond.
-
I agree! Unbelievable!
I mean, how can a comic with such soft corners at the top and bottom of the spine and a staple hole through the FC get a 9.8.
Unbelievable, you are so right.
Not to mention the spine dents. 9.4 tops.

We have a few 9.6s and 9.4s for sale. Our ebay account is Animalsrule28 for those interested.

GI JOE special #1 1994 Made as an afterthought to the GI JOE series, its basically a reprint of issue #60 in wich MCFarlane did the interior artwork. He did the Specials cover as an homage to his own work on Spiderman. (See the resemblance of Snake-Eyes to Spiderman on the cover. They printed about 10,000 of these. They are uncommon but certainly not rare. I like the issue for the cover myself. Prices vary but a 9.8 would bring a healthy $300+ in auction.

That will be an amazing achievement when you finish. I am collecting the run but I am buying raw issues. I try to find decent high grades but I will buy fillers and ugrade later. I want to be able to read every issue when ever I like, plus I don't have the resources to buy all issues in 9.6 - 9.8.
bought this one today, its an upgrade
I have a bunch of these for sale in the for sale forum. Check it out, there might be an issue you need to upgrade.

sweet. Once im done with 1-30 in 9.8 (probably never) then ill move on to 150-155 in 9.8.
-
No...I mean that CGC has a "9.6 cut-off" for significant production issues. Not sure that this 21 would trigger it though.
I think they have both.
-
Being that I can't see any defects in the scan, my prediction is CGC 9.6
Even if the book is flawless...I think CGC will cut it off at 9.6 for production issues.
You mean "Cut it off because they refuse to grade a 9.8" issue?
-
Well i am done with this thread for good. There is a conspiracy to grade low and be happy about it......................Which Vegan is agreeing today??
Once last think before I depart this thread forever. How do I get a picture to become a "big scan" Appreciate the help.
Too early for the FDQ exit, Duran. The better grading Vegan (M) graded the book. The doods in the grading department will help you with the scan.
-
a few stress marks and that corner could drop it to a 9.2. For ONCE I agree with Khaos. You need a bigger scan.

You have really made collecting GI Joes fun again. Thanks for that.........Because all of us deep down in our hearts our collectors and we love the chase for great books. Your thread is really appreciated.
I love it when theres more people hunting for these books because I cant seem to find many of them myself! The few 9.8s that are found rarely come up for sale. Some forum members like to poke fun at the GI JOEs publically, but behind the scenes, i know theyre searching for them as much as I am!
First appearance of Sonic the Hedgehog?
in Modern Age Comic Books

It would have been easier if they put a month on it, and not just Fall 1991. Technically, December is Fall, so the justice league issue could have been released before it or simulaniously, but I doubt it. I think you're probably right. I looked and I couldn't find any sonic threads.
