  1. Alas, phone banking for [political candidate] and then canvassing for [another political candidate] that day, from 11 to 6. Damn!
  2. I reviewed it for Zyzzyva, but their weird quarterly schedule means it won't be coming out for a while. It's a good book, and it goes deep into his work, but what they say here is true -- his life is almost absurd in that NOTHING HAPPENS to him. It's interesting that in this piece, they don't talk to Andreas Brown, his representative during his life. Brown was, uh, a character. To tie it into the forum, in my article I talk about trying to buy art from Brown and the adventure that resulted. Oh: here's a weird one. It's a 1970s TV guide illustration. Check out the signature. The dealer I got it from said that the TV Guide illos he'd seen were signed the same way, which made it very hard to sell. G
  3. Huh. I'm also intrigued by the exhange below, which really opens up new vistas in attributing artwork.
  4. I think a mouth-drilling auction means you need to melt down your fillings to win. Or it has to do with the "hammer" price but that's a little more disturbing.
  5. One of the byproducts of this thread: I had to take that Turnip-Man page out of its sleeve. For some weird reason I had never turned it over before. This is what I found on the back. (The girl's face and the doodling is definitely Leialoha -- Steve thinks the Captain Marvel figures are Starlin/Leialoha.)
  6. And then Turnip-Man along with the Kidney Lady in the background. And some duck.
  7. Dr. Angst introducing himself to the rest of the Band of the Bland.
  8. I am loving this thread. If anyone has the Elf with a Gun from The Defenders, I will plotz. (Note: all plotzing will occur privately in my own home, no confirmation by audio or visual means to be expected.)
  9. We never got to the part of the origin where the superpower of light-dampening thighs was explained, but I'm betting that would have been a 3-issue arc.
  10. I'm telling you, Gene -- the Cabal is paying attention.
  11. It's in code. You can decode it by holding a Silver Age Romita cover in front of it and shining a light through. All the non-restored parts show you the real menu.
  12. Cut to: Frank packing up his booth at the end of the con and realizing there's been a terrible mix-up.
  13. Quick google search brings up a few articles I remember that explain it: http://sequart.org/magazine/57102/frank-miller-krigstein-master-race/ https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2002/07/22/ballbuster (you need to scroll down a few grafs) https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/03/cartoonist-legend-bernard-krigsteins-career-foresh.html G
  14. Gene, I must lovingly chastise you! I've been to the Billy Ireland and it's something each and every one of us should do. Last week was Cartoon Crossroads, their once-a-year celebration of all things comics-based. It's got academic componants, artists who are in the news (the year I went, the big guest was Garry Trudeau -- this year it was, I kid you not, Olivia Jaimes's first public appearance), and artists whose work is far more popular than any of the stuff we worry about here (Raina Telgemeier). Also there's art for sale, mostly local artists, so if you're a Bone fan, you can find work by him you won't find anywhere else. Beyond the festival, there's the museum. When I was there they had Calvin & Hobbes and Little Nemos on the walls. That people could look at. And if you or I made an appoinment with someone like Jenny Robb, curator, she would give you a charming tour of those archives, and you can look at all the Caniff and Watterson you could imagine. If you were saying Ohio is out of the way, you're right. But it's not just part of a giant archive -- it's on display frequently. I encourage everyone to visit.
  15. You mean how they didn't disclose that Jack Kirby actually drew all of these?
